I realize this video is old and this may not be seen... but I've been researching for days now. Your video on Drazhar has given me the best method of painting my army with colors I really enjoy. But I have to ask.. can I apply that same method to my voidraven and venoms and such? I've painted a test kabalite using classic methods and while it looks good, I'd prefer the contrast route. Is it possible to match them much like you did this Rhino? Turquoise with a layer or two of black templar while avoiding the edges beneath? Would I do two thin layers of both turquoise and black templar? Is it even possible with more rounded vehicles like the venom? Thanks for your time, and your vids are great.
Hey buddy! So I’ve got Venom and Raider tutorials to plan this exact thing. So I believe yes it’s possible the terradon turquoise layer underneath doesn’t need to perfect so you only need to do it just once and at the moment I think 2 layers of 1:1 Medium:Black Templar on the panel layers will absolutely do the trick. I need to film the videos to make absolutely damn sure but they’ll be a little while before they come out if you don’t mind waiting?

Especially in a world where many won't even give contrast a try. If not for those like you or Juan making some great contrast vids, I dunno where I'd be! (Still using strictly classic paint, but regardless!) I assumed that the turquoise wouldn't need to be perfect as long as the edges pop. The black could potentially fix the rest. I'll be trying what you said here soon enough along with tinting the canopies with Munitorum varnish as a primer and contrast+medium with a 'ard coat finish. If I mess up, always got Super Clean for stripping and your future vids to look forward to. My only concern is that I have Wraithbone spray and Grey seer is out of stock often. Wraithbone makes colors very vivid and it's beautiful, I just hope it works for the Drukhari as well. Though I noticed black is black regardless of primer, so perhaps it'll work out! Thanks for the tips. I'm was planning to paint some Alpha Legion vehicles with contrast over metal, so this really helps. Also, the intro played at 1,25x speed REALLY sounds like something out of Persona.
I'd never thought about the using a contrast glaze to smooth things out, I wonder if this is partially reactivating the paint allowing you to move a small amount around to get the desired effect. Not that it matters, great techniques as ever
So, basically you paint it like you would paint a wall. Long, even strokes across the whole panel with proper load in brush to prevent streaming and brush marks
Basically! If you tackle it like regular paints it will gum up and blotch and scratch. It's also kind of like using a Highlighter or Felt Tip Pen. The more you go over a dry bit of ink the darker it will come out.

I watched it initially before I was ready to start painting in quiet fascination, but since watching and greatly appreciating how you later painted a Salamander with contrast paints I've decided to give your technique a try with Grey Seer and Warp Lightning for my future vehicles! Would you recommend pre-shading a Salamanders' vehicle with Militarum Green or Creed Camo?
OOf this is a big question. I suspect with Salamanders vehicles it might be a better idea to use a number of thinned down Warp Lightning coats to get there. It's a lovely paint to work with so it might work out but I can't make any promises on that one. The tricky thing I've discovered is that almost all the paints react differently to such large surface areas. Militarum Green or Creed Camo might work if they're really really thin but they are significantly darker than Warp Lightning and are in a different family of green as it work so the hue might be completely different. A weird suggestion would be to possibly use Apothecary White but again I need to test these things before I can actually confidently tell you yes or no if all that makes sense?

Looks great! What would be the main reason for painting a vehicle using contrast over using normal base paints? Are there any particular advantages for doing so? Thanks for another great tutorial.
So the reason for using Contrast paints for vehicles are few and far between particularly for the large armour. I personally prefer working with Contrast Paints because you can get a much smoother more consistent finish then you can with Base paints as you have really rely on making sure it's all thinned properly. Especially when using a brush which I do as I don't have an Airbrush. This is the first tank I've done with it and there's a few more planned for when I get around to it. I'll have a better answer for you then!

I have not found a "regular" paint that matches it perfectly so far, so I was looking for a tuto showing how to paint flat surfaces with contrast paints. This method doesn't look any quicker than the classic approach, but the advantage is matching colours in this case! Thanks @Warhipster !

After doing your bloody rose tutorial... What would be your opinion on spraying mephiston red then using your flesh tearers red/blood angels red/medium "glaze" over the top of that?
Certainly you could. If you do the Mephiston Red first though, you're better off doing a recess shade with BA Red, If you're into that sort of thing I say go for it it would probably be quicker! I just don't really like doing recess shades as it feels like edge highlighting but worse to me but that's just my preferences!
I have an Ahriman tutorial on the Channel that you might find useful and the Thousand Sons are definitely on my to do list it's just finding the time in amongst a packed schedule! I'll see what I can do about getting hold of a Rubric marine or something like that :)
Hmm, that all depends on how you're planning on highlighting your black. I do quite like a bit of a metallic weathering for a black vehicle, so that could be one way to take it.

Sweet video, as always. I have a question about pre-shading. Should you always use a similar colour to preshade? I wondered about trying to preshade with wyldwood to give my DA green a deep dark warm feel, before I start going over with gold (I'll be drybrushing that). Thought I'd check before committing to it on my Custodes (he's my first ever mini, so I named him Walter). Thanks again, keep up the great work, and as always the Emperor Protects.
It very much depends on the effect you’re going for - I’ve used things like Terradon Turquoise under Black Templar for Drukhari and that gives a subtle blue/green to the black with a turquoise edge. I think Wyldwood and Dark Angels Green could work really nicely together, though if you’re not sure on it, I’d maybe try it on a spare shoulder pad or something first.

@@Warhipster it worked really nicely! So did a 1:1 with medium for each layer, Dark Angels over Wyldwood over Wraithbone primer. Not even close the perfection you achieve, but I'm really happy with the colour. It's quite light in tone, and the Wyldwood seems to destaturate the green slightly, on the raised edges, with the duller green on the recesses.
The confidence will come with time, practice really does pay off with painting minis. You’re right in that you can’t post pictures to RUclips though if you use Twitter or Instagram at all you can always tag me.
I found using Khorne Red as my Primer coat, then Blood Angels Contrast over the top of it, brought out a really deep significant red depth. After all Blood Angels is a deep Red with a tinge of Black Templar added to it, giving it depth with one coat.
I'm certain it would! Although you might be better off spraying it Silver first to cut down on time and just take it real steady with the thinned down Black Templar.

Even my most careful applications still have small lines following the brush direction. They pop up on the outer edges of each brushstroke.

It could certainly work! You probably have to thin it a bit more to keep control over maybe one or two more parts more medium

Wow! I’m hoping to use this technique for painting an orange rhino, I’m petrified haha!

What spray colour is closest to this contrast base? Looking at maybe AP dragon red or Mephiston Red? Then paint recesses with Agrax or baal red?

doesnt wwork using speedpaints 2.0, i tired thinning it 10/1 and it reactivated the previous coat, idk what I did wrong
