Concert aria for soprano and orchestra
    Cheryl Studer - Soprano
    Berliner Philharmoniker
    Claudio Abbado
    Berlin, Schauspielhaus
    Lyrics by Pietro Metastasio:
    Ah! perfido, spergiuro,
    Barbaro traditor, tu parti?
E son questi gl'ultimi tuoi congedi?
    Ove s'intese tirannia più crudel?
Va, scellerato! va, pur fuggi da me,
    L'ira de' numi non fuggirai.
Se v'è giustizia in ciel, se v'è pietà,
Congiureranno a gara tutti a punirti!
    Ombra seguace, presente, ovunque vai,
    Vedrò le mie vendette,
    Io già le godo immaginando.
I fulmini ti veggo già balenar d'intorno.
    Ah no! Fermate, vindici Dei!
Risparmiate quel cor, ferite il mio!
S'ei non è più qual era, son io qual fui,
Per lui vivea, voglio morir per lui!
    Per pietà, non dirmi addio!
    Di te priva che farò?
    Tu lo sai, bell'idol mio!
    Io d'affanno morirò.
Ah crudel! Tu vuoi ch'io mora!
Tu non hai pietà di me?
    Perchè rendi a chi t'adora
    Così barbara mercè?
Dite voi se in tanto affanno
    Non son degna di pietà?

    I remember this concert well.
It was the new-year's-evening concert of the BPO on the last day of 1991 and solely dedicated to Beethoven.
    Claudio Abbado had just recently
( 1989 ) been elected the new chief conductor for , I think, his first term of 7 years.
( He had been offered a lifelong contract like H.v.Karajan, but he had refused such an offer !
He would later renew his contract for another 6 years until 2002. )
The concert was broadcasted live in many countries throughout the world and the live-recording was sold as CD under the title
    "Beethoven in Berlin".
Cheryl Studer had opened the concert with this famous concert-aria of Beethoven, one of the few works of this kind, he had composed on an Italian libretto as a result of having taken lessons from the famous Italian composer of operas, Antonio Salieri.
The other parts of the concert were a magnificent rendition of the third Leonoren-ouverture,
followed by Beethoven's music for Goethe's tragedy "Egmont" with the ( now late ) Bruno Ganz as the recitator,
and the Choral fantasy op.80 with
a very young Evgeny Kissin at the piano .
The whole concert was magnificent !

Canto e interpretazione del valore di un surgelato di supermercato. Il domopak di alluminio dell'abito mi pare l'unica cosa appropriata...al surgelato. Abbado, con una cantante simile non poteva certo brillare. Poteva scegliere meglio.

Listen to many of the other recordings on RUclips [e.g., Nilsson's 1974 concert] and you will find many of the conductors taking a slower tempo overall and in particular in the more mournful sections. This is certainly by no means a slow tempo.
