Wow, the tonic chord always sounding like beat one was something I never thought about before. Very cool insight on how harmony can affect rhythmic perception
Instantly subscribed. People have different learning styles but mine is whatever you’re doing here. Crystal clear visual representations of complex concepts.
@@YogevGabay plus your way of counting it brings to the forefront the implicit pyramidical structure of the song, I guess.....even though then should have progressed to 2,2,1 I guess....
Please just keep doing what you’ve been doing. Had never heard the Radiohead tune, but found the analysis so helpful w/ regard to metric analysis. I have a number of favorite tunes that I’d love to have you analyze, but I’d rather have you choose. Thanks so much.
Another absolutely great breaking down and description, this time of one of the more intriguing songs in music history... Found your channel through the Meshuggah Clockworks video, working my way through them all... ended up at this one, because I am releasing an album with a song that is completely inspired by both Meshuggah and Pyramid Song, and the polyrhythm turns my brain inside out a little bit. Still a long way to go with learning of music theory, but your channel is helping, so thank you again.
As an old hairless drummer who never took lessons I appreciate the visual breakdown. I now am taking lessons and reading my 2nd week is kicking my ass but I shall conquer!
This was fantastic, the best explanation yet! Would love to hear you explain why the rhythms in Tropical Fuck Storm songs like Antimatter Animals are so disorienting.
i think something really subtle that makes it intially confusing is the fact that the F# chord in the second bar appears after 8 chords have played, so along with it being the first chord in the sequence, it reinforces the idea that the next bar starts on that chord rather than the F#m when the rhythm *actually* repeats, i'm not sure, it just sounds similar to a 4/4 bar with an extension of 1 or 2 beats afterwards in my mind, even though the timing isn't anything like that, purely because the first 2 bars are 10 notes total (so like an 8+2) i explaied it really poorly but i tried my best lmao
This explains why I couldn't hear this as 4 despite the internet saying it was. It also explains the title perhaps, describing the shape of the music as it builds???
thanks for this, one of my favorite songs ever! if i can make a suggestion, you should definitely check out the french band Ghost Rythms, tons of polyrythms are going on in their music
Great video on this question. Nicely done. To me, Pyramid Song feels like repeated bars of 5, 3, 3, 5. (As opposed to your feeling of 5, 4, 4, 3.) But I think that actually counting that wouldn't help me play it anyway, and in the end there is only just a feeling to me, and not a count. But other people may think of it completely different, and only feel comfortable playing it with a very solid count going in their head. To each their own. Great vid!
I think you've done a good job of distinguishing the difference between rhythmic metre (the groups and divisions of beats) and time signature (the thing we write on sheet music to convey info about the metre). The reason people seem to struggle with thinking of Pyramid Song as being 'in 4/4' is because conventionally, a 4/4 time signature indicates a 'simple quadruple' metre (in other words, beats grouped into 4 and subdivided evenly in half). But Pyramid Song does not sound like it's in simple quadruple metre. However, it's easiest to write its metre using a 4/4 time signature. So the song breaks the convenion that 4/4=simple quadruple. Because of the accented beats, chord changes, and swung feel, it isn't simple quadruple, but nonetheless the time signature on the sheet music is 4/4.
@@YogevGabay Perhaps you could make a video about how AAL manages to create the "illusion" of playing in really complicated time signatures and polyrhythms while they're actually playing in 4/4?
After that vague sensation while trying to catch the rythm behind this great song, I came to the conclusion (while driving...) that it's about a 5-3-3-5 (like kind of a mirror) instead of 5-4-4-3, but it is true that the second 5 includes a kind of void that divides it in a certain way... A suggestion is to listen to Arthur Hnatek Trio just released album "Static" (yesterday!), and try to analyse songs like "In Three" or "Cinque" ;) Thanks for your great analysis, Yogev!
It’s absolutely 4/4. 4 bar pattern and it’s swung. Count like a percussionist and til the 4th bar and repeat. The song will just evolves around you until the outro.
Yorke’s piano playing pushes and pulls the beat so far that it sounds like a different time signature at times
Wow, the tonic chord always sounding like beat one was something I never thought about before. Very cool insight on how harmony can affect rhythmic perception
Oh hell yeah, harmony has a tone of power !
I like the idea that splitting it up into quavers means it's 3 3 4 3 3 which is the amount of sides in each face of a pyramid
that does a bad job of describing the actual syncopation and pulse of the phrase though

Ohh man thanks, happy you liked it!
ohh! and there're some super interesting polyrhythms going on in Leprouss' 'The Sky Is Red".
I recommend you give it listen ;)
Checking it out !
Makes sense as 5,4,4,3. New to your channel! Love your content!

Brilliant! Best video about the pyramid song rhythm I've seen so far. I finally got it. Thank you!

specially enjoyed the Animals As Leaders part.
You should definitely make an episode dedicated to one of their tracks :)
Bro, I've been looking for songs of theirs that have polyrhythms, and I found like 2 old ones. Do you know a good example?
@@YogevGabay Perhaps you could make a video about how AAL manages to create the "illusion" of playing in really complicated time signatures and polyrhythms while they're actually playing in 4/4?

It's 8/4. This creates perfect symmetry when written on a stave.
What about myxomatosis?
Still in 4/4

Will check!
Oh, I hear it more as 5-5-6! I can twist my ear around 5-4-4-3 too tho, makes sense, although 5-8-3 fits there better. Semantics, I guess.
I wonder if they called it pyramid song because 5, 4, 4, 3 kinda stacks like a pyramid if it were bricks?
Maybe? no idea. But I mean, I wonder how they hear it. This is only my interpretation
🤘🏻
Have you made on for The Crunge by Led Zep yet? I'd be stoked to see it
the short answer is yes
I hear 5 straight thru 😂
Nice intro... ...😂😂😂😂 Also, sorry for breaking the 69 comments. 😂

Israel!
@@YogevGabay nice!!
I actually think it is on a 21/8, where each bar looks like:
1/4, 1/4, 5/16, 1/4, 1/4, 1/4, 1/4, 5/16, 1/4, 1/4
