  • Problem Statement: A sample of natural gas containing 80% methane and the rest Nitrogen is burnt with 20% excess air. With 80% of the combustibles producing carbon dioxide and the remaining going to carbon monoxide, find the ORSAT analysis in volume percentage.
This video explains a problem on combustion which appeared in GATE 2003. Natural gas containing methane burns in excess of air to produce both carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. one has to calculate the percentage composition of flue gas on dry basis i.e ORSAT analysis. This problem has been done here using Atomic species/elemental Balance. Degree of Freedom for the process is calculated to be zero and the problem is completely specified. For a basis of 100 mol of natural gas, amount of combustion products formed are calculated. The problem has been solved in a very simple manner.
