Lecture 45 Raoult's Law and Henry's Law
This video teaches you to write two more additional equations viz. Henry’s law and Raoult’s law, when two phases with more than one component are in equilibrium. Conditions under which Henry’s law and Raoult’s law are applicable, have been discussed and explained with a numerical problem.
Problem on Henry’s Law: Consider a sealed rigid bottle containing carbon dioxide and water at 10 bar and ambient temperature (by mistake in the video I have written 100 degree C, but its immaterial as Temp is nowhere used in calculation). Assume gas phase in bottle to be pure CO2 and obeys ideal gas law. Liquid phase contains CO2 dissolved in water and is an ideal solution. Henry’s law constant = 1000 bar...

Lecture 44 Vapor Pressure Estimation using Cox Chart and Antoine's Equation
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.4 года назад
This video starts by explaining the phase diagram of a pure species on a Pressure Temperature plane. All the single-phase regions and phase coexistence lines have been explained. With the help of Gibb’s Phase Rule, it is explained that how many intensive variables one has to specify in order to completely define single phase and two-phase systems. Then continuing with the last lecture, two more...
Lecture 43 Estimation of Vapor Pressure using Clausius Clapeyron Equation
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.4 года назад
Often in industries, we deal with multiphase systems consisting of either single component or multi-components. This video deals with the systems consisting of two or more phases of a single component, in equilibrium with each other. If we apply Gibbs Phase rule to a single component system in which two phases are in equilibrium, then the degree of freedom is one. Degree of freedom is the numbe...
Lecture 42 Material Balance Involving Reversible Reaction in Ideal Gas Phase
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.4 года назад
This video takes a problem on material balance involving reversible reaction in gas phase. Gas is considered as an ideal gas and so ideal gas equation is one more equation which can be used. The problem is solved following the basic steps we had outlined in this course. First a basis is selected and a fully labelled flow chart is made. Degree of freedom analysis is done next. While doing so, id...
Lecture 41 Numerical Problem on Combustion of Ideal Gas Mixture
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.4 года назад
Problem statement: A natural gas contains 95 wt% methane and 5 wt% ethane. Five hundred cubic meters per hour of this gas at 40 degree C and 1.1 bar is to be burned with 25% excess air. The air flowmeter is calibrated to read the volumetric flowrate at standard temperature and pressure. What should the meter read (in SCMH) when the flow rate is set to the desired value? The numerical problem ta...
Lecture 40 Ideal Gas Mixtures: Dalton's Law and Amagat's Law
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.4 года назад
This video explains the equations applicable to a mixture of ideal gases. Dalton's law of partial pressure is first discussed and derived. Then Amagat's law is discussed and derived. It is demonstrated that for ideal gases, volume fractions are the same as the mole fractions. In the later part of the video, a numerical problem is taken on ideal gas mixture. This problem is taken from the textbo...

Problem Description: A gas cylinder filled with Nitrogen at STP has a mass of 37.289g. The same container filled with Carbon Dioxide at STP has a mass of 37.440. When filled with an unknown gas at STP,, the container mass is 37.062g. Calculate the molecular weight of the unknown gas and state its probable identity. This problem is an unsolved question number 5.12 in the textbook by Felder. Idea...
Lecture 38 Ideal Gas Equation:When and How to use
Просмотров 8754 года назад
This video discusses the applicability of ideal gas equation to estimate the density of an ideal gas. Ideal gas law can be used when gas is at low pressure and high temperature. A criterion involving specific molar volume is given to justify the use of ideal gas law for different gases. Later part of the video discusses how to use ideal gas law when you don't remember the value of Gas Constant ...
Lecture 37 Densities of Liquid Mixtures
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.4 года назад
This video explains how to write additional equations if the problem statement is not self contained. Usually these equations are the relations which estimate physical properties such as density, vapor pressure, solubility etc. This video discusses how to estimate densities of pure liquids and solids from tabulated data or from empirical correlations. Average densities of liquid mixtures contai...
Lecture 36 GATE Problem on ORSAT Analysis
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.4 года назад
Problem Statement: A sample of natural gas containing 80% methane and the rest Nitrogen is burnt with 20% excess air. With 80% of the combustibles producing carbon dioxide and the remaining going to carbon monoxide, find the ORSAT analysis in volume percentage. This video explains a problem on combustion which appeared in GATE 2003. Natural gas containing methane burns in excess of air to produ...
Lecture 35 GATE Problem on Combustion
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.4 года назад
Problem Statement: A hydrocarbon is burnt with excess air. The ORSAT analysis of the flue gas shows 10.81% CO2, 3.78% O2 and 85.41% N2. Calculate C to H ratio in the hydrocarbon and percentage excess of air used. This Video takes a problem on combustion of an unknown hydrocarbon in presence of excess air or excess oxygen. Orsat analysis gives the flue gas composition on dry basis. The amount of...
Lecture 34 Combustion Reactions
Просмотров 4,9 тыс.5 лет назад
Combustion is an important problem in process calculation course and has appeared several times in GATE exam. This video explains in detail the meaning of partial combustion and complete combustion. Usually for combustion, air is available free of cost and is used to burn the given fuel. The gaseous products of combustion are known as flue gas or stack gas. It usually consists of Carbon dioxide...
Lecture 33 Recycle with Purge in Reactive Systems
Просмотров 9 тыс.5 лет назад
This video explains a problem on recycle with purge in reactive systems. This is taken from the text book by Himmelblau. Extent of reaction is used to solve the problem. Carbon monoxide and Hydrogen react to form methanol in a reactor in which conversion per pass is 18%. Fresh feed contains 67.3 mol% Hydrogen, 32.5 mol% Carbon monoxide and remaining is methane as inerts. The concentration of in...
Lecture 32 GATE Problem on Recycle with Purge
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.5 лет назад
This video explains how to take material balance on reactive systems involving a recycle stream with inerts. Inerts tend to build up in the system. Hence a purge stream is drawn from the recycle stream in order to maintain the steady state and prevent concentration of inerts in the recycle. The problem taken here appeared in 1990 GATE. A systematic approach to any such problem involving recycle...
Lecture 31 GATE Problem on Recycle with Multiple Reactions
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.5 лет назад
A GATE problem has been discussed in this video. The problem involves recycle with multiple reactions taking place in the reactor. Further the problem is complicated as degree of freedom is not zero anywhere. A systematic approach to the problem has been discussed making use of the extent of reactions. Since there are two reactions, so two extents of reaction have been defined. The amount of fr...

So, where you found oxygen using stoichiometry being equal to 25 mol. i found the same answer using the ratio method that we usually use to find moles of a substance reacted with a limiting reagent. So is it a correct approach that i used ?? because i used 100 mol instead of 85 mol reacted.

Yes you are right. I have to take stoichiometric coefficient of ethylene oxide as 2. Then nEo will be 50 kmol in the first case when fractional conversion of the limiting reactant is 50%. In the second case when 60 kmol of oxygen is left, extent of reaction is 40, so nEo will be 2 x 40 = 80 kmol.
