Glad to finally see what the Medieval American units in Civilization look like up close.
U.S. actually has a descend team, I'd say they've came in forth place in the past. It's just that Russians are one of the two founders of this modern sport and are very elite at it.
+LordEd21 21 Actually U. S. team mostly used swords while Russians have a front line of swords and pole arms and in the back. Russians developed their own tactics that work. The second best team "Ukraine" tries to copy it with good results against others, but still gets demolished vs Russia. Personally I'm surprised that U. S. team hadn't included more of eastern European tactics in their own game play. They all share tips with each other and this had been going on 2009 i believe.
+Sergey Slipchenko Yeah, you would think U.S. team would've learned it by now: keep pole arms in the back to support the sword/shield front line and exploit opportunities. Instead the team makes the same mistakes every year: 1) mixing different weapons together in no particular order, 2) pole arms rushing into frontline melee thus neutralizing the advantage of their reach, and 3) taking too long to bring people down even with localized advantage. In the first fight, 1 Russian pole arm advance too far and was engaged by 2 U.S. pole arms, but they took so long in that contest they never had a chance to bring him down.

Yes, this arena is notoriously small for this sport. Usually the field is about the sizeof a little more than a quarter of a football field.
Some people say that this feild size was selected to play to the strength of the Russians. Whether or not that is true, theior fighting style does play well in these cramped quarters.

Things they got right: Costumes, weapons, armors and the visual aspect
of it, quite impressive...also the level of intensity, with hard blows
being delivered, looks pretty straight forward too!
Things they got wrong: The rules, or the "rule", because it seems as the
only thing that matters is making your oponent trip... Theres no point
on how good you are with your sword...if your oponent is a 120kg fat
bloke you are going down..
I can see a point system wouldnt work, whos gonna keep the track of who-
hit-where&when?? specially with 40 people out there...
What about certain areas of the arena (wich should be bigger IMO as
well) are marked with colored circles, stay in there for a period of
time earn a certain amount of points...
What about some kind of capture the flag, or defend the king or
whatever,, but this nonsensse...
What I see here is just a bunch of properly dressed medieval knights
fighting like drunk british teenagers, and it aint pretty...
Weapon skills, medieval warfar, battle tactics?? mehh forget about that,
just bring your national mma\jiujitsu\wrestling\judo team...dress them
as medieval as you can,, boom job done...

+Rico Cori I agree, I def saw a bunch of players, on both sides get shredded but keep going because they're still standing, which to me, invalidates the whole point of swords and shields. And the area looked way too small for 21v21, maybe 5v5 or 10v10. There's certainly got to be a better way to do this, other than it being a bunch of guys basically ignoring their weapons and going for tackles or trips.
+Foxtrot Whiskey You would have a hard time killing man wearing full armor using only melee weapons; In regular face to face combat between heavily armored opponents the common approach was to put your enemy down and then stab him through the visor when he was more exposed. Some weapon like poleaxes were particularly good at pulling people around precisely because of that. As a matter of fact (there are solid historical records), even serious duels -including those to death- between nobles and knights had rules revolving around the action of having your opponent either laying on the ground or with one knee on the ground to determine the winner. In some cases it was agreed that the winner had the opportunity to chose the fate of the loser, in others the "to death" part was straight forward and they were killed right there.
1 on 1 duels also started off with more than one weapon per participant, the weapons were also agreed in before hand.
Considering you can't really let people go stabbing around on a sport (because that might end up on a serious injury, unlike bashing that is mostly safe), this comes fairly close to a real combat. The technique books are that, technique books, you don't make perfect executions of your attacks while getting your head slammed by a bardiche, you press forward and use the techniques only if the situation lets you. Let's not overlook the effect of having your head bashed, dealing with a very reduced visibility, more cumbersome movability and the ever raising body heat; it might seem easy on video, but the strain on your body and your attention capability is more than considerable.
I do agree that holding position point systems and other stuff could be interesting, but this is as close as you can get to a medieval tournament while keeping things relatively safe.

In my club we are using hard rubber for speartips and blunt weapons - they are good enough to leave a bruise on solid stab or hit through padded cloth (most of us use 4 layers) but do almost nothing aganist metal. Also we are carefully looking at the size of rubber spearheads and helmet vizors to not let tip go in by any means. Practicing those for duels mostly or for 3x3 and 5x5 on-hit fights where a couple of watchers can count hits properly. In no-hit fights (where everyone are basically bashing each other until they fall) rubber spearheads are useless due to lack of stopping power, thats true. Would be way too dangerous to use even blunt metal ones. Damn physics!
Not really fair, Russians have been doing this for decades. Still, they are impressive and very skilled. Much love from the US. If we ever got together, the rest of the world would tremble ;-)
The Germans, the French , the English have been doing this for centuries, but the Russians are rolling them in the sand.
