  • Welcome to the Green Wasp Removal RUclips Channel! In this episode we observe native and invasive paper wasp queens in direct competition for resources as they build their nests in the Spring of 2024!
On April, 15, 2024, we filmed several paper wasp queens/foundresses as they worked on starting their brand new nests. Polistes fuscatus (Northern Paper Wasp) is a beneficial native species here in NE Indiana, while Polistes dominula is an invasive species from overseas whose impact on native wasps remains unclear. They are all building their nests under the same barn eaves this season so we’ll be tracking their progress to see which species survives and thrives the most as they compete for local resources and nesting space.
Thanks for riding along with us. Enjoy the show!

Looks like the native wasps have a head start over the invasive ones, good to see!

Hi cawe. Thanks for your comment. Yes! Early last season (2023) we did a field experiment on one property where we captured over 30 invasive Polistes dominula queens/foundresses (European paper wasp) as they were attempting to start nests locally or were foraging for nesting materials, and put them into captivity. The theory was that if we interrupted their spring queen nesting populations/cycles, we may create more room for beneficial native species to get established on the property. As a result, we saw an increase last year in native wasps in our micro-ecosystem (one property), and now this spring season 2024, we are seeing mostly native beneficial Polistes paper wasp species so far and fewer invasive Polistes dominula. This one little experiment is far too limited in scope to be decisive, but it suggests that simply capturing so many invasive queens during spring time nesting period, directly resulted in more beneficial wasp nests getting established in the following season.
