    Should make heat easier in the winter as well without the intercooler..

    My intercooler fan runs almost full time, my check engine light is on, and now it goes into limp mode i think, only will go up to 3000rmp, if you shut it off for a couple min it's fine again, think i'll order that temp sensor, looks like the exhaust manifold gasket is leaking, I need to spend a weekend just going over everything, thanks for the video.

      Could check around the connector to air temp sensor. Could be a broken wire there also.
      Careful removing connector when go to install new temp sensor. The connector breaks really easy. Silly design. Repaired mine with plastic welder or soldering gun miltiple times. A large zip tie also works to hold temp sensor in. Under pressure, will blow out if connector broken.

      @@manbuilds1587 I tried moving my wastegate today, would not move, should I be able to move it? Thanks

      @@lawrenceveinotte not by hand if it is still connected by the rod to the diaphram actuator. If loosened from the rod it should move freely.
      The nuts on the rod have 3 turns preload holding the waste gate shut untill the turbo makes a higher boost pressure. The rod & diaphram are pulling & holding it shut at rest. If it where loose & could move by hand then there is issue.

    What about installing a manual fan switch? So we can keep the intercooler?
    Just an idea.
    Thanks for the video!!

    Surprised to see very little boost under 2k rpm(I can start to hear hissing sound around 2k rpm, I thought the waste gate is dumping the extra exhaust, instead it just starts to build boost). When I was cruising at 100km/h, it's about 2200 rpm. Unless the car is over 3000 rpm all the time, it seems the intercooler did little.

      Needs heat for boost. At idle there is no load & injection pressure lower.
      When driving more fuel is injected & makes more heat. Will see more boost while driving then reving at idle.
      Intercoolers do work but they have to be in the front of the car to cool the boosted air. & intercoolers are more efficient with the more boost your making. Stock engine as small as the smart car. 800cc. It doesn compress that much heat to warm the incoming air too much.
      The intake volume is also too large for the car. Maybe beneficial if the intercooler was half the size & in the airstream some how to gain that extra .5hp that it may or may not help with. Mine runs much better without it.

    You will be making way more boost because the air is hotter and it's the same density of air if it were intercooled with less boost. I would plan on testing your intercooler and putting it back on in the summer.

      Your thinking large scale. This car is only 800 cc. There is no good way to get air flow through the intercooler at lower speeds. Unless have the fan on all the time there is no benefit to it. It just adds restriction & more intake volume for slugish throttle response.

    • @diesellivesmatter
      @diesellivesmatter 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@manbuilds1587 I don't agree, that thing should flow great at low speeds and maybe struggle at high speeds. Boost doesn't need that greatly designed components. 17 psi hot might be the same charge as 12 psi with the intercooler fan on. It's probably more important to have a proper functioning cac on a little engine than a larger one so you can keep head gaskets in it as that engine build quality is probably lower than the bigger and more expensive engines.

    • @manbuilds1587
      @manbuilds1587  7 месяцев назад

      @diesellivesmatter its not over boosting so head gasket is not going to blow becaused increased pressure. Can set turbo to not go above a certain pressure. Intake pressure is the same. Its just getting boost to engine quicker with less delay & restriction.

      @@manbuilds1587 yeah I saw how you adjusted the waste gate, pretty cool

    You should pressure test your old intercooler, it probably was leaking on the caps. Should have ran torque pro and a OBD2 adapter and see what it showed for intake temp before and after. I would think you will need it in the summer.

    • @manbuilds1587

      Yes, will have to re-asses in summer. Right now the car runs great with out it. Much better at lower end & take off. If have a little bit less power on the top end that is fine by me for the trade off on the bottom end around town.
      I will have to put an accurate boost gauge on it. I dont think it makes alot of pressure & I dont think the intercooler stuffed back in the hot with the engine was doing anything. Probable adding more heat to the intake air. If the intercooler was on the front of the car like on a truck then maybe a benefit. But the distance & volume would be too great for that little engine.
      I think the little engine benefits more from less intake air volume & the more flow than it did from the restrictive higher volume intercooler that never cools unless at highway speed.
      It was +10 °c the other day & after a long drive the intake was warm to touch & I did not notice any power off the top end.
      A intercooler makes sense on a big truck, this little car not much can do to get it in the airflow at low speed & still keep the volume low for better throttle response. Its only 800cc.

      @@manbuilds1587kiss, intercooler delete and add a coolant bypass restriction, then in the summer put intercooler back on hook the fan on all the time and swap back the coolant bypass.

      I am going to do a video towing with the smart car eventually. If I start towing often then maybe will consider putting the intercooler back on. Other wise it runs too well with out it. So far I havent seen the down side to no intercooler the little car.
      No. When I get it set correctly. The bypass restriction on the cooling will be good for all year around. The way the bypass cooling works is to keep the coolant in the head circulating so you do not have any hot & cold spots, Just uniform temp. Right now the little cars bypass line is larger than on a small block 350. Its just like open thermostat all the time. Even in summer the engine doesnt get hot enough to open thermostat on a short drive. With the radiator in the front & engine in the back the cooling system holds alot of coolant volume for a 800cc engine. Little car always struggling to get up to temp & chokes itself out long before it should. These little cars could be great but alot of design aspects keep them from rinning as long and as well as they should.
      Trying to improve on that.
      Will do a follow up video on the intercooler delete. Thank you for comments & watching. :)

      Alot of prople have problems with there intercooler. Parts expensive or hard to find. I also wondered if it was actually doing anything. The little car has trouble to get up to temperature. Hotter air coming in help with combustion. It seems to run better without. Gets up to temp faster & seems quicker, weather that is from reduced restriction better flow or warmer air coming in. Anyway I think is better without now that I have removed it. Yes i could have put a fan switch but that would not have answered any questions I had & would give me one more thing to do & think about when driving.

      Good. It was 34°c here. I had 4 bubbles on dash & cooling fan was running at every stop. I didnt notice any loss in power. It ran great with out the intercooler.
