Lived in Dubai for 8 years. Violent crime and theft is an absolute rarity. You can definitely leave your things on the table, go outside for a smoke, go to the toilet and it will 100% be there when you get back. Most violence is a crime of passion and the person knows the victim, though even then, its super rare. There is a middle-lower class but if you are caught stealing the penalties are harsh. Granted there arent people growing up in poverty like the UK etc, but there is zero tolerance. There was an American girl last year who kicked off on a worker at a car rental place. Swearing at people is a big no no, and she was arrested and faced jail time. They dont tolerate anti social and aggressive behavior. Its definitely a safer society as a result.
I play judo, a bloke i know went to japan a few years ago with a mate to train at the kodokan, the chap bought a camera and left it accidentally on a bench at the train station, when they got to the hotel and went back it was still on the bench. Unbelievable.
