I like Archtype: Petrucci because of the versatility of it. Seems like the Neural DSP plugins are great, but a lot of them seem very one trick pony-ish. It seems like the Petrucci has a lot of options for effects, and because of DT's versatility, they couldn't ignore cleans and edge of breakup tones, while still providing great options for high gain, as well.
Which doesn’t make much sense, especially with the tunings. This guy plays in because that guitar SIM. Gojira was made literally for Gojira, and when have you ever seen them play in a really low tuning? It’s probably why people have so many problems, trying to get the right tone out of it when they play in lower tunings
im so glad i watched this vid, you put a term to the reason im getting into neural dsp plug-ins. high quality presets are so good at getting rid of "option paralysis", the number one thing that gives me writer's block.
For me, the Soldano is S-tier, but the Soldano is also just part of my sound. That's the thing, someone that's looking for their sound should demo all of these that they're interested in.
@@Coggler101010 Yeah, I do a lot of different stuff traditional heavy metal to death and black metal stuff, so those three are really handy go along with. When recording I usually use my own cab IRs, but when just jamming around with records the original cabs are really good. I think I have NTS, Soldano, Nameless, Cali and DarkGlass purchased myself. DarkGlass I use all the time for bass.
For me I'd be going Petrucci or Rabea mainly because they are the only 2 neural DSP plug ins with pitch shifters. So I can play in different tunings on the fly. I've not tried a plug in before. But based on demos and videos tonally the plini has been my favorite.
Yeah both of those are bang for your buck perfect! Although You can still achieve pitch tuning with the Gojira plug-in. It might not be distinctly for it but it still works great!
you can pitch shift with the gojira one by setting the pedal all the way to "wet", and then go up and down the pedal to tune. I use it all the time cause dropping down with a floyd roes is a pain in the ass@@sb632
My favorite by far is the Petrucci. The pedals and the sounds I get out of that amp are amazing. The drop tune sim, the wah, the EQ, the list goes on. Great list!
Totally neural unrelated but could you do an in depth review on the RHINO from aurora dsp? I think it's a monster of a plugin.. I've had it for a few months now and I've actually switched out my JST toneforge jeff loomis for the rhino on my last few projects. Insane!!!
The three plugins I've bought are the Nameless, Gojira, and Soldano. The Nameless is the one I use the most for sure, the Soldano I use for more thrash stuff and the Gojira for all the creative tools
My list: 1. Petrucci, it just has all the bells and whistles and can do anything pretty much 2. Nolly, the producer's amp sim. Very versatile and reliable. The ability to swap cabs and amps is peak. 3. Parallax, best bass plugin full stop period the end 4. Gojira, the octaver and whammy are such great additions. awesome presets too. Perfect for just jamming. 5. Nameless, because DJENT 6. Plini X, very cool and modern. better for leads rather than chugs but it can do both 7. Granophyre, another really cool amp. Stripped down and fun to dial in.
I'd say Nolly, if you were only going to pick one, to cover all bases. But if you already had other options, amps etc, then for the best specific tone, I'd also choose the Fortin Nameless suite. But Nolly can compete with Nameless, but can also do a lot more - so it's better value and more of an all-rounder. For cleans, the Morgan suite is ace.
For me it's Gojira, Granophyre, Rabea & Petrucci. I own several more than that, but those are the ones I use. Usually running Granophyre and Gojira for rhythms and Rabea and Petrucci for cleans and leads.
Nolly was the first archetype plug-in that I felt was worth spending my money on. As time has evolved, I just recently tested out the SLO100 and it has an amp push type feel, but it’s more of an old school metal sound. I tested fortin nameless recently and it’s incredible. I tested it AFTER I tested the JST Disruptor (which is god tier), but the Nameless suite is 1:1 with it in terms of tightness and mid tone response. Once neural DSP launches support for apple silicon on the fortin nameless, I’ll give it the S tier. People don’t realize how critical apple silicon support is from a tech perspective. It reduces the overall hardware utilization of your mac by a significant amount and is more optimized for use as a plug-in in your DAW.
Ray we are opening a new school of rock in Media,Pa this Aug. If your not to busy, please consider applying, we need everything, teachers, music director, studio manager. I’m a guitar/bass teacher. Like to have you involved
My go to is the petrucci. I have modified the Andy sneap 1 preset with a different cab, added an over drive and dialed back some controls just a little. The tone is sounding gigantic. I like to add the Ryan siew rhythm patch from the gojira to this sound. Stock settings because they are awesome! Great ranking and video 🤘
The Tim Henson archetype is actually amazing when used correctly. Amazing cleans and fantastic mid gain lead tones. Plus you can push the lead amp a bit more than some people think and get a lush 80s lead tone.
What are your thoughts on the Nameless vs Gojira? I'm currently deciding between the two and I'm curious as to which one sounds the closest to a real tube amp.
I haven't used all of the plugins but can say this for sure that my list would be exactly like yours, except for one minor exception: I'd put Petrucci archetype along with the Gojira because of its Piezo feature and also sometimes I prefer the crunchy Pull me under type rhythm over anything.
For a very meaty rhythm sound I prefer mixing Gojira on the left and Granophyre on the right, but both with external IR's from Ryan Harvey (Catharsis) and GGD Cali cabs
archetype nolly has always been my go to till i used the nameless suite, and damn, most sims always felt a bit too "perfect" for me till i heart that plugin. It sounds too real.
Is it possible to use Neural DSP on a NUX MG30? I’m just curious as I’m about to purchase some plug ins from Neural but don’t have or can I afford a Quad Cortex at the moment. Thanks in advance!
I think the Darkglass is great, and you can get way more diverse tones from it. Parallax is cool, but it's a one trick pony to me. Great for metal, and that's it really. The multiband idea is fantastic (and pretty standard protocol when doing rock/metal bass tones), but in my opinion they have really under-utilized the potential. They could mix in different distortion styles, like an ampeg type, and big muff style, or even tape saturation and to me, the value would go up exponentially.
I use a lot of fuzz layered with lightly over driven guitars. For me the cory wong is my #1 pedal platform and I hate his music lol. I really want to get the tone king someday. Cali & Nolly ones rock hard and props for putting Paralax in S tier.... But the darkglass... what did you do to my boy!?
I own the mark IIC+, Soldano and Nolly, I think the IIC+ has a lot of bang for buck, you can get anything from cristal clean to high gain leads from it, and it has ny favorite cabs, I sometimes record the nolly with the IIC+ cabs. The soldano I feel it has an annoying frequency in the high end, I imagine you can eq it out but I feel the Nolly fits better than the Soldano on most metal mixes. Although lead sound thru the Soldano and lower gain stuff is great!
I record in a myriad of styles and I will probably have the Fortin Noname soon. I have a lot of EVH style and Rectifier sims. The ToneKing and the Soldano are badass. They are great for pop, rock, and country. I've also used the Soldano to get a lead to cut through a metal mix with ease.
Gonna have to disagree on the parallax vs darkglass - so much more versatility and rich sound with the darkglass imo if you're tracking bass. Parallax is good, but the darkglass sounds more like my old 8x10 + Ampeg and I really lean into that big tone.
Who out there was asking for a Tom morello plug-in? Who? Lol They seriously seem to be banking on random bedroom players having expression pedals. So stupid. It’s just basic sounds but can get weird if you already own a separate product
I agree with your rankings for the most part. I've tried them all and feel the Petrucci and Plini are levels above the rest. The Nolly sim is way overrated. Granophyre is underrated. I am actually not a big fan of the Gojira plugin for metal. I find the gain too dry and it doesn't sag or bloom at all like you'd expect a tube amp to do.
I think Plini is S or A tier since imo it put their name on the map. Nolly/Gojira/Petrucci get A due to features and tones. I think Omega gets a D tier since although it sounds great they're not updating it at all. Rabea/Morello/Abasi get D tier too imo. I think all the Fortin stuff are C tiers besides the Cali for the features.
I was with you until you put SLO in C tier. I feel like it’s one of the few amps with “dynamic range” it can do a nice bright tone plus a deep chug. Great for metalcore. If I had to own one hardware amp it would be a SLO100 for sure
I actually really like the third Audioslave record, Revelations. The top songs arent as memorable as the first record, but I felt the band came into its own on that record. I mean, obviously Rage was Rage and Chris Cornell was already a beast, and the first album feels more like Rage with Chris Cornell. However, the third album feels like a "band". It's quite underrated in my opinion. Consider giving it another spin and see what you think now, cuz I know it was easy to brush off at the time.
Word! They could also do a Justin Chancellor for Bass, cuz he has some great tones and effects as well. Not sure if you know who Ian Thornley is, but I would love his archetype as well. Dude always has amazing tones! He uses Suhr amplifiers, which I don't think Neural has any sims of.
Wow that’s refreshing to hear, as it’s one of my least favorites! Apart from the lead tones I’m not really into it. But that’s the joy in all of this! Different strokes. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. I hope you have a great rest of your day!
Why do I hate parallax? Everyone seems to dig it. Every sound is distorted even clean tones. Hated everything about it. Wound up using the tim henson for bass.
I have the Nameless , Petrucci, and Plini. Best of the best . The transposer and doubler on the Petrucci are worth it alone. I have a lot of high end effects that don't get the transposition as good as the Petrucci does for guitar. Bottom line everything ever made by Neural is better than the rest , with one exception softube makes a fantastic Marshall equal to Neural quality .
I got the Tone King, Omega, and Abasi. TK obviously it’s for a different player and it does the vitagey tones great. Abasi is odd, for rhythm tones it just sucks for me with all the bass and stuff BUT the clean amp and the yellow amp are great. Get some real nice crisp cleans and while I wouldn’t really use the yellow amp for rhythm either (which is why I got the Omega), what it is good at are leads, it gives you that huge sound you want for a good lead. But yeah that 2nd amp Abasi has I can’t make it sound good for the life of me. In short, i would’ve the gotten the Gojira or Petrucci (it wasn’t out yet) instead.
