This was one of your best videos. I have been collecting comics since 1973. I have 26K comics. I have one room in my house and a storage unit. When I was younger, I went to at least 4 major comic conventions per year. Now I am handi-capped, and my scooter is not a great way to get around in the crowds. I enjoy watching your videos, even the sales. I get to see alot of cool comics, even though I cant afford to buy. Thank you for what you do, I really appreciate it.

With this hobby, you can literally hold history in your hands. Opening a comic book where you can smell the old newsprint and feel the grit of the paper in your hands. It's like opening a time capsule and stepping into another era. It's a truly magical thing when you find a story and art that really resonates with you on a deeply profound and personal level. (Dan Jurgens' work has always been my personal favorite since I was a kid.)
This is truly the greatest medium in the world. There's nothing else like it.

I tell my non collector friends this all the time. The smell of the book, the dialogue, and even the adds make you feel you are back in time in a different era. Simpler times. Enjoying quality entertainment after taking some change to the dime store to get the new issue that just came out.

Cinema is a similar art form, in that it's a visual medium, and also narrative-driven. Consider how often popular comics are adapted to movies, and how often popular movies are given comic / graphic-novel adaptations.

I think the best thing when it comes to comic collecting is simply just how many different directions you can go in choosing what to collect. You can collect your favorite character/s, your favorite artists and writers, you can collect books that are part of major events, books that are part of a particular series, graded books, key issues, first appearances, etc. This variety of things to collect added with the variety of ways to collect make it so that no two collections are the same.

i have learned a lot more about collecting. When I first started I was obsessed with aquiring every issue. For instance, I had a lot of the wolverine collection 1 through 100 of series 2 along with hulk 180 and 181. I also had Spawn 1 through 90 with various other books that were mostly number 1s etc. I lost that collection during hurricane Katrina and stopped until I became wheel chair bound and got back into the hobby. Since then Ive learned about keys, DC rare prints and limited covers. Most of this I have learned from watching your channel, so ty for the great content and I look forward to more.

My personal choice for good and bad is actually the same thing... Age, I've been reading, collecting and buying comic books for almost 60 years now, and one day I won't. I'm not an invest person, when I'm gone there's going to be a pretty happy charity shop. I'm just sad that I'm going to miss the end of a good story arc,😢 if I get to 73, I will have least finished the Colour version of the Walking Dead, that's my goal!😇 (I didn't get into the black and white until the #1 was a thousand pounds or something crazy like that, so I never bothered!) Two selfish things I know, but I don't worry about grails or first appearances, if I have them that's good, but if I don't that's okay to!

Your comment about hiding your love of comics as a child resonated with me strongly. Growing up as a person of colour in the ‘80s (and my older siblings who grew up in the ‘70s) - it was very common to hear from people that “black people don’t read comics”. From fellow children and adults alike. The absurdity of such presumptions drum up memories that are surprisingly bittersweet.
Furthermore, finding comics with heroes who looked like myself back then proved to be a significant challenge. Luckily, one or two LCS took surprising interest on the topic and made efforts to stock some characters of interest. It was a very interesting, engaging, awkward and transformative process for my siblings and I to have to - for the most part - educate and inform adults who were supposed to be highly knowledgeable about comic book history and the comic book world at large. But that’s how it starts - a willingness from both sides to sit down and have frank, honest and factual conversation.
It never stopped us from pursuing any of our interests, but I was fortunate to have found a small circle of friends who’s passions transcended the boundaries of race and class.
I left the hobby for many years but got back into it a year or two ago - only because while going through and organizing my storage I stumbled upon my childhood collection. I forgot how many I had! I was also surprised to frequent those same LCS that I engaged with as a kid where the proprietors recognized me and recalled me by name and had recited my run lists from memory after decades of not visiting!
So my siblings and I frequent them once more, and continue to support them to this day!

Great list bro! I would say that an additional good one is how the community comes together to support one another. I see videos all the time about a need that arises and how much people came together to help out. Seeing all of the AOKs are great too. On the bad side of things-people really need to accept the fact that there is no one way to collect! Just because they don’t prefer to collect this that or the other doesn’t mean that it’s not ok for someone who chooses to go that route! If everyone collected the same way, how boring would that be!

I started collecting again 2 years ago and this time I collect keys only for characters I like.
I also like the grading aspect by CGC.
I think it's great to have books graded because eventually I will sell my small collection and whether it's me selling it or my children, my books will have been graded professionally and there won't be much arguing about grade and value.
We didn't have a grading service back in the mid 80's when I started.

You can collect keys, first appearances, Classic covers, runs, gorilla covers, good girl, certain characters, rare obscurities, slabbed, raw, variants, 9.8s, mid grade, low grade, moderns, stuff you just like, you name it! Probably the worst thing for me is the time that I lost based on being a female and feeling unwelcome in a lot of nerdier hobbies. I remember being in school and I commented on another kid's Star Wars toy and was told I couldn't like it since I was a girl. It just seemed like I was always judged harsher for my interests than my brother and pushed in different directions. I am going to give you the good, and the bad about our hobby. Good: I get to spend time with my eight-year-old doing something that we both love. He always asks if I will take him to our LCS all right when I come home did I get him a new book? The time we spent together is priceless. Now the bed: it’s just not enough space for all the books that we have and want to get. Comic books add up quickly and take up lots of space. One box soon becomes 20 boxes. You attain someone else’s collection and add it to the clutter that you already have. not everyone can afford to have storage lockers and those often are not safe. When you collect comics space is at a premium and your wife is always asking where she could have some space…

Ok, I'll give a great: treasure hunting! Searching through bins, exploring shops, visiting garage sales, checking local ads, browsing eBay, even traveling to new places, there are so many potential treasures, that is comics, out there just waiting to be found by collectors! There's nothing like going out and simply searching... hunting...for comic books!

Best thing for me is my local shop…they’re the best and my safe space. Also the community in general and channels like yours James. It’s inspired me to start my own channel (Madmage-Collector if you’re ever curious 😊)…I’m a humble little channel and it’s been a fun experience so far. Thanks for what you do!

Finding an awesome key or even a grail at a garage sale or your local flea market is great feeling! Can never get tired of finding a cool book for $2

This was a fun list to watch play out. I think one of the best things about this hobby is that everyone is different and u can collect/read what u like and ignore the noise from speculators and investors.

My one great thing is the art. Even though two of my favorite artists died too soon (Darwyn Cooke and John Paul Leon), the pencilling and inking and coloring of modern art are amazing. Some artists I like are Darick Robertson (pencilling & inking), Diego Rodriguez (coloring), Dave Stewart (coloring), Michael Allred (pencilling and inking), Laura Allred (coloring), Brad Anderson (coloring), Gary Frank (pencilling & inking), Jamie McKelvie (pencilling, inking, and coloring), Ron Garney (pencilling and inking), Bruno Redondo (pencilling and inking), and Adriano Lucas (coloring).

For something on the ups is getting people into the hobby! I just got my girlfriend into it through the Night Terrors stories that are coming out right now and all she wants to do is find comic shops, go through back issues and find a horror story or something that peaks her interest.

Top thing that makes this hobby the worst are the RUclips influencers and speculators. They trashed it by artificially inflating prices

A good aspect about comics is that they allow you to escape reality for a little while and experience an adventure. A bad aspect is the over saturation of certain characters and titles along with the constant renumbering of titles.

One of the best things about collecting comics is that it’s fairly easy to make the hobby fund itself. With some knowledge and research it’s easy to flip books to make money and spend that on the ones you’re chasing

I recently started collecting/reading again this past year and it’s by far the most rewarding/fun hobby I currently have. I’m always looking forward to my biweekly trips to my LCS.

1 bad thing, it can def be daunting to feel like you know basic info about a character that you really like. They are always being retconned, changed, or dying/resurrecting. Tough to keep up sometimes!

The best thing about this hobby for me is that there are issues and runs that fit every budget and can be enjoyed. I have a dollar bin budget but still find a lot really nice keys, all be it not in the best condition.
What sucks is how insanely jealous people get over this stuff. I see a lots of hateful comments on you guys’ channels from people who just can’t stand to anyone score a nice issue at a good price, hate on guys who get a better grade on their books than they do, and make brutal comments to content creators simply because they have more disposable income or capital that they’ve put the work in to obtain.
But, to quote the great Taylor Swift, haters gonna hate.

Biggest bad thing for me is the weight of the books. I'm having to break down my long boxes to short boxes.

Best thing is the hunt. The anticipation of flipping through a box and finding something new. Or finally completing that run you have been working on.

I’ve always loved the idea of superheroes and comic books but being a more serious collector now I enjoy it more than ever. I’m always excited for the new comics I get and am now addicted to the weekly claim sales for the enjoyment of getting those awesome books at really good prices as well as being in the community with everyone here. My LCS has turned into a happy place for me, it’s almost relaxing to go and scroll through all of the back issues looking for some nice pickups.
The only thing I’m having an issue with now is money and the space I need for my collection. Other than that this hobby is fantastic and is one I don’t think I’ll stop doing.

Best thing is having so much knowledge available and the access to different sites to be able to search and purchase these. Down side is over priced comics and so called dealers selling At ridiculous prices. I live in UK and our prices are 10/20% higher than in the US. I do buy from US too

My bad experiences buying comics so far (buying on and off since 1995) has been sellers misrepresenting their comics and/or failing to disclose restoration😅

Best thing about modern comic book collecting is access to more avenues to find issues now than when I started as a Louisiana country boy in mid 1970s...worst thing now is collecting for prestige books only and too many variant copies...seems there is a loss to enjoying the book stories....

Great video. Definitely love the community. I wish I had made it to the back deck comic fest. One thing I hate is the cost of supplies. Boards, bags, top loaders, etc.

For me it’s comic conventions taken up with tables in Artist alley who are selling stickers and badges of artwork which isn’t their own, and absolutely killing it in sales. Meanwhile comic book artists’ tables are a ghost town.
