Glad to see I’m not the only one struggling with weed control.
I feel like I'm getting better but it's still a battle
So glad you're doing these videos. I'm thinking of taking my cattle off a few pastures and doing a Christmas tree farm.
Thanks Glad you're enjoying the videos! Keep me posted what you decide. Best of luck!
It will be interesting to see how well the planter works and how big of learning curve. It looks simple enough, but it is always the simple things that bite me in the butt. Look forward to seeing the video of it in action.
I'm hoping its pretty easy! We'll certainly see how it goes.
Looks like that Select worked pretty good. With grass that tall I would not expect a complete kill. This late in the season what you got is what I'd be good with at my place. We are selectively weed eating the worst spots remaining in row to prepare for a fall application of Princep. You can go over the top as long as the trees are dormant. We will put down a half yearly rate now and the other half tank mixed in the spring with our other herbicide. Keeps the rows clean and gets rid of a lot of winter annuals that can make a mess of things. Starting clean in the spring is one of the keys to getting good results. Your norway spruce are coming along nicely. They look good! Best of luck with the planter.
Thanks David!
Your baby Trees look Really Good!!! Clover does too. We will be planting 400 wildlife bushes/trees in MN this Spring and looking into weed free ideas for the seedlings. We will be using grow tubes around them to keep out the deer and other tree munchers. This is my first time trying to grow a large amount, the spousal unit already planted about 7000 about 30 years ago, about of 90% of them survived. He also planted about 1000 fruit trees and only 40% survived due to critters and weeds. Those plantings did not receive any grow tubes or special weedings. He basically planted them and left (we were stationed overseas at the time). So this time we will be around to give them good care and ensure they are able to mature. I really don't want to use chemicals around them, but may have to resort to that. I am thinking of laying the plastic down or even cardboard. I know with the tubes, the chemicals shouldn't be too much of a problem.... just wanting more natural if possible.
Great video and the hard work you and your family have done Is very evident!
Thanks so much! We've tried managing the grass and weeds naturally and mechanically, but just can't keep up with it. So we've adopted some chemical use that should free up our time considerably. Good luck with your trees & thanks for watching
See if you can fix the shoe. One of the fins is bent forward (I believe the left one). It should be angled back like the right one. Also, make sure the ground is soft. I don’t see a coulter wheel which will help slice the ground, but seeing how you said you’re going to till those rows I think you’ll be fine. Let us know!!
Thanks Tony! Yes, we tilled this weekend, so the ground should be in great shape for planting in a couple weeks. The shoe I think will just flip back once it starts digging, I think, but I'll watch it to be sure. Thanks for watching!
Stay friends with that fellow who owns that tree planter. Now your a true tree farmer !!!!! Flat land, long long rows.. plenty of room for many rows... That tree planter will save so much time and effort,, even if you have to rent it from him.
Could wood chip be laid around each tree to keep down the weeds and grasses? We are doing this in our orchard. It’s a fair bit of work to do it. However laying down wood chip has many benefits.
We have done a bit of that. It really only controls weeds for part of the season. We will continue to do some mulching around new plantings, but we see the real benefit in retaining moisture not so much as part of the weed control program
Do you ever spray glyphosate around your existing trees or only before you plant?
I do spray a ring around each tree with a backpack sprayer. I've also got a 3 point sprayer and sprayed clethodim to kill grasses. It can be sprayed over top trees.
@@WoodsTreeFarm I think I'm going to try that this year also. Thanks for the response. Getting ready to plant here in 2 weeks!
can you spell out the chemical that you use please.
clethodim. goes by a number of trade names including grass out max, arrest max and envoy
@@WoodsTreeFarm Thank you
