Christmas tree farm weed control. After years we keep changing our mind on how to do it.

  • Spraying herbicide to control the weeds on your Christmas tree farm is very important. Rampant weeds can steal nutrients and water from the trees. Weeds can also hurt the shape of the tree by taking out sunlight. We have changed how we spray the last several years. We now choose to spray less chemical and allow grass to grow in between rows. This allows for a good walking surface during the wet months of tree harvest for our u-cut customers.

    Thanks for posting the video. I've been enjoying what you've shared regarding your Christmas tree farm. I have several spruce tress on my property in the northern mid-west that I planted in 2013 to eventually become a privacy barrier along a highway. One tip another tree farmer passed along to me was the use of Simazine to help keep the growth down around the base of the tress. It is in the preemergent family; however, I have found that it will knock down existing grasses after about a month following application. The key benefit is that I don't need to worry about overspray onto the trees and it lasts much of the growing season. There are times I have mixed it with glyphosate when spraying around the hardwoods in order to achieve a quicker result, but also get the benefit of the longer-lasting preemergent.
    Thanks again for sharing your learnings...it has been quite helpful. After watching just a few of your videos, it is clear that Christmas tree farming is not for the faint-of-heart.

      Thanks for kind words. I will look into the chemical you mentioned. We are looking at applying more preemergent this coming year and keeping a cleaner look. Our fall planting this year will have the soil more sealed over before applying chemicals making it less likely to injure trees. Thanks for watching.

    We use a plastic or steel pipe mounted on a wooden stick and put it over the young trees when we spray .around them.

    you ever think about doing straw? Its def tons of work but i dont really find it that much time doing that. i do that with my garden... and then you talk about rodents. darn you you hit all the right points. dang you
    thanks for the informantion. I was thinking about straw or rye bales

    • @FlanaganHomestead

      We have never discussed straw. I have a friend that works for a tree service and we could get a lot of chips. We have considered those around the base of the trees.

    Interesting your rows run North South. I bought a long leaf pine farm that the rows are planted East West. Weeds Yes! and plenty of them. But my rows are 12 feet apart. I really don't want to spray because I have a well for drinking water. I'm trying something new. Grazing goats in between the rows with temporary fencing. I realize it will be a lot of work moving the fences but I have to pasture the goats anyway. You have goats. Do you use them to work the perimeter?

      Rows really run North/south and East/west. Just one foot wider north/south. I would like to hear how your goats do. My goats kill everything. The trees wouldn’t make it. I have tried a large amount of chickens to scratch the soil and eat seeds. They couldn’t keep up. I am considering getting sheep they are easier on the trees

    Would rolling out round hay bales, in rows to plant in, help with weeds? I do this on my cattle ranch and it has some other benefits like enriches the soil and holds on to moisture. Thanks!

      Possibly. Mulching of any type can be helpfull. Hay still has its seeds though. Might make the problem worse when it germinates

    I just spray around the trees, mainly because I’m too cheap to pay for the chemicals to spray down the rows. I alternate mowing - north-south one time, east-west the next. I’ve thought about plating wild flowers between rows, but still keeping the area right around the trees clear. It would look nice, and I wouldn’t have to mow. What are your thoughts about that?

    • @FlanaganHomestead
      @FlanaganHomestead  3 года назад

      I like your thinking. We are always experimenting with that type of thing. If not with the trees with other areas of the homestead. Would the wildflowers grow up thick enough to keep the other weeds out is the main question I have. The grass when thick enough dominates the ground. I wish we had killed the pasture grass and put in a fescue that only grows to 8 inch height. But a field of Christmas trees with wildflowers would be beautiful and quite the photo op. Do you have any pictures from previous years.

      I sprayed roundup pro right over the top of my trees, but I did this when they were dormant. Wouldn’t go over the top now. Spray around carefully when they are actively growing. Going out to the trees now. Hope to have an update video on how my spraying worked.
