    What would happen if you lock the shafts of the two motors together and then run from one ESC in parallel? If the kv is the same and you can somehow align the motors before locking together, would this allow both to run efficiently?

    • @ValleyRC
      @ValleyRC 4 года назад +3

      That seems to work on RC cars like the E-maxx where you sync both motors before meshing them with the spur gear. I've seen it done with 1 or 2 ESCs.
      I also have a Nikko rc car that has entirely separate motors and transmissions at the front and back and I've used 1 ESC and 2 brushless motors and it to work fine. Maybe a little stuttery off the line sometimes, especially a low speed start but once it was up and running it went like a dream to be honest.

    I'm so glad I found out your video, I was wondering what would happen if 2 motors are symmetrical mechanical connected so they generate always the same backEMF.
    I'm thinking about using 2x 70g motors instead of a 200g motor to gain weight. In theory 2 motors of half of the bigger one should work better since more cooling and more winding, hence more Eddy currents (Trust me, I'm an EE), but using 2 motors should work either with symmetrical backEMF, or with hall sensor master and slave setup. I don't have hall so I might try the first in practice..

    • @XavierBetoN
      @XavierBetoN 3 месяца назад

      plot twist: those were the pros in ideal world of course, in real world cons are EMF divides by 2 hence backEMF will drop, performance will drop, but in my case i have 500w MCU(different kind of esc that can limit current (non-avionic apps)) with 2 180w motors so I'll have to give it a shot

    I watched earlier and found interesting, especially how one affects the other. I had an idea, isolate the motors from each other by running the one motor directly from the controller and then use the 3 phases to control the gates of 6 MOSFET,s to drive the second motor. Just a thought that came to me watching Master Chef ( don't ask) have not tried but wondering about an easy way to make my skateboard 4wd.

    One esc can used to drive two identical motors but the wires have to be very short. It works but definitely not recommended. Any differences in motors' specification, a new and an older motor, impedance due to longer or bad cables, can cause one of the motors stop or tickle due to desync.

  • @justingort1
    @justingort1 3 года назад

    @Joyplanes RC I like how you showed in the diagram at 2:35 that the signals might be out of phase.
    And in theory that should result in a failure, in reality it showed that is seemed just fine.
    this is because the ESC will try to sync then unintentionally by slowing down one motor until they are the same.
    This has the effect that it creates an oscillation in these signals equal to the switching frequency that will work against both motors.
    and this it the observed reduced efficiency as its wasting power trying to correct the errors.
    And although it is possible to run motors this way it is still not recommended as in the long term it will damage the ESC and/or the motor(s)

    Well done on the video however I would like to add something. If the two motors are identical and ESC of correct rating you should not have desync issues. The two motors should phase lock (3 phase generation principle) a scope would confirm this/bl heli frames. Not advisable though.

    • @eliasshedd
      @eliasshedd 4 года назад +2

      A three wire esc is for a brushless motor. Brushless esc's send pulses of current to each set of windings. A 2 wire esc literally just connects the battery to the motor. A 2 wire esc at full throttle is no different than connecting the battery DIRECTLY to the motor. Google how brushless vs. brushed work.

    • @hifinsword
      @hifinsword 4 года назад

      You change direction of a brushless motor's spin by swapping out any 2 of the 3 wires. But now you need a reverse prop and you will either need to use a Left-Hand nut to secure the prop to a Left-Hand prop shaft/adapter, or use a Lock Nut or a Cotter pin thru the Right-Hand nut and shaft. Otherwise it will eventually spin the nut off the prop shaft.

    The thing you say is bad ie if one motor stops so dies the other could be a good thing in a plane for a novice pilot, I saw a guy crash a twin motor model because one motor failed and he could not control the model due to to the other motor puling the plane into a spin.
    However I absolutely agree it's a bad idea and esc do not cost much anyway so why would you even bother risking running two motors from one esc?
