It's his signature Fernandes bass. They don't make them anymore since he moved onto an endorsement by Zon, which made a 5-string Sonus for him, and more recently Warwick, who are putting out a 5-string Streamer signature version for him.

Rob definitely brings more groove/rhythmic approach to Metallica. His faces and frog hopping make me laugh, but he is definitely good for this band.
