A widescreen version of the 16-bit version would be best I think, provided the color palette was altered to be more pastel. Right now the PC remake is the clear winner.
The Genesis remaster looks amazing. That could easily pass as an official Sega product. I've always liked the idea of taking an existing game and redesigning the level layout, to make a new challenge. This one actually goes above an beyond that. I've always felt that video games such as Super Mario Bros, Sonic The Hedgehog, Lemmings, and so on, could be an endless line of releases as simply level redesigns produced by the official owners.
Man that rotation on the SMS special stage really blows my mind! The 2nd SMS remake confused me. I thought it was running on the SMS LOL! The Nintendo version is incredible in its own rights. So many sprites, smooth, very little slow down, and nice music. It's hard to pick a winner!
I think the first and last one are just completely different games in terms of level design and everything else… the 2 in the middle are perfectly done from the SMS/GG, the other ones are brand new and nothing in common with those 8-bit games

Swear the NES remaster just reminds me of Somari but with Sonic’s actual sprite and the colours look half decent
