Failed Self Repair Attempt Repaired 07 Cluster
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 июн 2018
- The owner of this cluster replaced the MOSFET, but it immediately died and took a few components out with it. I'm not sure why it failed, but it's back up and running.

Subscribed yesterday after reading comments on another channel...Glad I did.
Having been in the automotive trade for 25yrs and owned and operated a small shop in Toronto for 16, I think that I know talent when I see it...well done and Happy New year to you and yours!
Thank you. Happy New Year to you too!
Wow! Awesome work. You make it look so easy. And the videography,... excellent. Thanks!
I see you have a quality control assistant at the end there.😺
is that the one sticking all these fake QC stickers on stuff ? :)
And it even passed the 'CAT' SCAN !
Hey Jeff ... nice soldering techniques dude. Its great to have the tools too. Happy New Year !
Out of all of these I have seen, you are amazing and very down to earth guy. This is my favorite cause the kitty is supervising, how cute.
:)
Subscribed. Thumbs up for the cat.
You are the man!!!!! Awesome work and explanation!
I have been enjoying watching you solder these over several videos now and I subscribed. Question, what is the clear liquid you pour over after soldering?
Rubbing alcohol
my Chevy tach and oil pressure gauge goes up but not down. I took it out and pushed them back to zero but I noticed they don't move down freely like the other gauges. So I assume it's the motors. I'm going to be taking it apart and attempting to repair myself and give you a shout out in the video. If I mess it up I'll be sending it to you to fix LOL
@@WJHandyDad yep sounds like you have failed stepper motors. The part that people struggle the most with is removing the original motors without damaging the solder pads.
probably within a week or two I'll know if I did it right or if I need to pay you to fix it :)
Buen trabajo... A good job👍
great job ! . i have an 07 also with same problem .
Make it look so easy on those small components.
Thanks so much for the work, Jeff! I’m confident I would not have been able to finish the job myself after watching you pick up where I had left off. You really do make it look much easier than it is.
By the way, what solution is it that you use prior to brushing with the tooth brush? I assume it’s for cleaning off flux?
Yep, it's just rubbing alcohol to clean off the flux. The flux I use is a no-clean, but I like to leave it clean to pretend I'm a professional : )
Almost like the one with the diode that was split, and all the issues with this board is the same as the last one I watched.
Kitty Approved....
What value is the shunt resistor supposed to be??? I assume 1R0 is 1 ohms.... so 3 resistors in parallel is 0.333 ohms. Possibly the original one was 0.3 ohms (0R3) which is lower than 0.333 ohms which would provide the higher drive voltage. Or is there some other issue that the lower resistor value is masking???
The value is too low for my $40 meter to reliably measure. But I believe you're right about the value.
What is the liquid you put on the board
Good work once more my friend! Jeff can you tell me what the resistor size should have been so that you would not have to stack 3 of them up or what was the factory resistor part number that came off would be great for those two locations. Thanks Sir. James
I cant at this time. The original numbers were burnt off. All of my donor boards are a different revision, different PWM driver chip and one shunt R instead of 2. It's s precision low ohm (and low tolerance) resistor, my meter does not have a good enough resolution for shunt resistors.
okay thanks Jeff for your time and great Vid by the way sir! Have a great day. James
What a mess... but if only our eyes could see as deep as a microscope.
Having problems with a 2009 gmc Acadia odometer screen works intermittently. It's a common problem with this make also Buick enclave &Saturn outlook, but haven't found any info on the fix. Any help is much appreciated.
I've done a few here and there. But haven't had an opportunity to make a repair video yet.
Is the fix on the board? Or electrical?
It may be failed solder joints. You might try reflowing them with some new solder and a little flux.
You're awesome
Jeff I just have one question. I have a 2010 silverado cluster that functions properly but I want to change the leds to another color. I haven't been able to figure out how to power it on a bench since I don't have that truck anymore. Would really be a big help if you can share that info.
I'm pretty sure I found the pinout from Google.
@@jeffescortlx only find the one for the older truck I have (2000). I can find the radio pinouts but not the cluster one for 07+.
Yellowo wire, pin 8. I'm using a dropper resistor to +12 to be on the safe side, might not be needed. You'll probably need to supply power and ground for it to turn on the back lights.
Great work
Thanks!
Good job bro .. love it ❤️👍
Thanks!
👍👍👍
Nice cat.
Do you clean the weaved copper or just chuck it when it’s full of solder?
The solder wick? Yes it get's thrown out when it's soaked up with solder.
Michael -
A trick in electronics benchwork (I learned 45 years ago from my high school electronics teacher, ex-Motorola), is to “slightly open” solder wick braid. You “push back” slightly on the end of the braid.
This creates pockets for the solder to fill during its capillary action.
Solder wick is then more effective when cleaning up the board, and you use less solder wick.
-
Solder wick is not a generic commodity that some mfg. would like you to believe.
Some “real garbage” out there. Rosin flux versions are preferred over plain copper wick.
I prefer Dri-Wick from American Beauty (Clawson, Michigan), which uses dry rosin.
Capillary action of solder is better with quality rosin flux.

American Beauty demonstrates, here:

A second choice would be Chem-Wik by Chemtronics.
Avoid buying used, surplus, or long-shelf life solder-wick. Use “fresh” supplies - it matters.
w9gb thank you very much for the great information I do appreciate it!!!!!!
How can i send mine for a repair. Its the usual no display and dim shifter side.
My email address is visible in desktop mode under my channel about tab.
Who makes these PCBs Magna Donnelley or something? They
make junk so it wouldn't surprise me.
If you think the full size cluster PCB is cheap, don't look at the caviler PCB. That one is thin and single sided with a cheap LCD.
What is a common problem in a 1993 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme Digital cluster
its 27 years old that's what
I. Jackanov They all do it though and only has 86,000 miles
@@chris18228 so send the cluster out and get it fixed to the tune of 200-400 or so dollars because its a "low mileage classic" or live with it because its "old and not worth it". pick one its a free country.
I. Jackanov I live with it I just use the speedometer app on my phone
Hello Jeff I have a 03 Tahoe cluster nothing works but the check engine lights lol how could you help me out do u have a email thanks if. Could help me out
My email address is listed under my channel about tab. It's visible to Windows PC users.
what is the liquid I see you using in all your videos?
Rubbing alcohol
i work on Plymouth dodge Chrysler Voyager caravan town and country for 1995 2000
What’s your email so I can get the 411 on sending you my cluster?
It's listed in the about tab, visible in desktop, just not mobile.
jeffescortlx my laptop is in worse condition than my cluster apparently...I’ll email you when I’m able to get past the captcha without my laptop freezing up
Hello. This is eloy I pm you the other day. Don’t know if you received message or if you messaged me back ?
Yes, I replied to your private message 4 days ago.
