Yes it is. The best I have in my area is a couple hipster places that try to fake this. Then when you go in they have mostly a bunch of gossipy cackling women working there. I can get that experience at Great Clips for a lot cheaper. The couple men who work there are smug.
You can find old fashion style barber shops in the southern part of the USA pretty easily. Who doesn't like to go back in time for a few minutes every now and then? As far as this being an easy job my next door neighbor is a barber and he had a shoulder replacement done a couple of years ago. Says it still bothers him when cutting hair.
(This is Tom, not Sandra.) WOW!!!! What a great video of a nice, and neat, slice of Americana!! Thank you for sharing this video of what America used to be back in the olden days before the 1970's!!!! Those signs, ads, and memorabilia really take me back to a more pleasant time in America!!!! THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!
I’m a barber myself and I’ll say that these type of guys and these type of shops are the best thing to come out of the barber world … the old school barber shops especially in America is AMAZING 🤙
Wow this is a great historical piece for all States as well as Tennesse. We lost our old gentleman that ran the shop in my home town in Indiana . He gave me my first haircut and I am 77 years old. So these videos are really memory inducing. Thank you John
Love the Barber Shops! I'm 57 years old and still have fond memories of my dad taking me to the barber shop that round the corner from our house. He was an older man and his name was Barney. When the cut was finished, you got to reach your hand into a box of bubble gum
Loved this interview of the Barber Shop.. The only thing that was missing was a sucker or a piece of double bubble bubble gum for the kids after their hair cut. 😁
We love Gary. He gives the best looking hair cuts! My son would only let Gary cut his hair the whole time he was growing up. When he was younger and he needed a haircut, I mentioned going somewhere else since we live almost to Barbourville. Oh boy did he let me know in a hurry that he wasn’t having none of that nonsense. He was in his booster seat and threw his head back and cried! He threw one of the only tantrums he’d ever thrown! Hello Gary! Hope you are well!! Love, Steve, Amy and Steven Lane Walker
Amy Walker: Your son, cute & funny and it tells the character and the man Gary is. I sure hope to get by his shop some day. Wish I'd seen this vid sooner. I came down I75 one week ago today on way to SC. Stopped in Corbin for gas. Even had a notion to jump on 25W and see something other than Interstate traffic. Maybe on the way home if I go back that way. People like him are the ones I admire
Excellent Video! Between the 'Trump' Sticker, and the "This is Not a Gun Free Zone' Sticker on the mirrors, this is my kind of Based, Red Blooded American Patriot. I haven't met a single person on any of your videos, that I didn't like. Living in Connecticut, it's a refreshing sight to see, and it reminds me of the polite society we used to live in.
That was one awesome video there, reminded so much of my ole Barber in town I went so for so long as a kid. His name was Jimmy. He used to put a board across the arms of his barber chair for children to sit on. He done passed and gone few years back. Love all your videos. Thanks again from Tappahannock, VA 👍
Thanks John for bringing Gary to us! Looks like he has a great customer base! You can tell the people really appreciate him. Looks like he does a great job and is so patient with the children. BTW- Great haircut 💇♂️! Thanks Gary!!
Oh yes, I remember the old barber shop in downtown Richmond Kentucky! I has a 12 year old and I remember learning more about the birds and bees described by colorful animal and flower metaphors by all the old guys in the shop and thinking myself what the heck?….your suppose to do what!!?…… three kids later I guess I figured it out! Lol could you pass me a fried bologna sandwich please! Lol
A barber who is also a barbershop historian and barbershop-related antique collector! Wow! Very rare and sincerely special! A no smoking barber shop. Awesome and welcomed! A barber who is also a true Child of GOD! Outstanding! You don't eat nothing until you pray! Priceless! His favorite things in the shop: antique barber pole, water from the River Jordon, and frankincense and myrrh. Beautiful! He knows how to maintain long-lasting true friendships and love/appreciate his friends very much. That's how it's supposed to be! He speaks highly about friends who are no longer around. Compassionate and heartfelt! He makes sure that GOD is all around him in the barber shop and everywhere he goes. Hallelujah! Keeps demons away. What a wonderful, unique man!!
This reminds me so much of my late father-in-law who had a barber shop in our small town. He loved all the old antiques too.....the walls were full of them. He had customers from as far away as 70 miles who came to get their hair cut. Unfortunately, he passed away 3 years ago. There aren't many places like this left any more. I'll always remember that old barber shop..... ❤
Well done. Brought back a ton of childhood memories when I used to go to the barber shop in my grandparents hometown. Some of the best days of my life. Thank you for sharing.
I learned how to cut hair in a barbershop like this. That was 50 years ago. I'm now retired from the business. With the exception of a brief stint in the Marines it's the only job I ever had .Good times...
Gary seems like a great guy. I’m sure that he is a fine barber. His shop is really a treasure. True barbers who really cater to the men with good service and a decent haircut are becoming harder and harder to find in many communities. I remember my first haircut and even though my hair is a little thinner I still get a haircut every two weeks (payday). This is a great video and I appreciate your effort in documenting the history of this region. God bless y’all. - Tennessee Smoky
Good men are the best. Thankful for all of you all over this earth. John makes our days with his wonderful videos. How precious was the little red haired boy getting a haircut.👏👏👏💕
There is nothing like this in my immediate area anymore. There are a few of those hipster type places that try to replicate this kind of thing but just embarrass themselves. They then have gossipy cackling women on their staff and charge top dollar for it. I usually end up at great clips. Pretty much the same thing at 1/4 of the price.
Great piece. I know where I'd get my hair cut if I still lived in Williamsburg. I remember Gary's '55 Chevy. It was green and white. I lived across the street from Gary when I was a teenager and was good friends with his younger brother, Jerry Allen. God rest his soul. 😞
Old school barber shops in my area were also gun shops, nothing like Saturday morning getting a haircut, shave and new gun to play with. With a new gun purchase the cut and shave were free.
Nothing quite like a good ole fashioned barber shop. When I first moved to the Phoenix, AZ area I looked around for a barber who could do simple stuff like a flat top or a short cut with whitewalls. I was surprised that with this area being so popular with retirees and a military base nearby I couldn't find a place that could do either of those. I finally found a shop in Scottsdale that fit the bill just fine. For the years that I went there I had the same barber and he took real good care of me. If you're ever in the Scottsdale area and in need of a good barber, check out Gio's at 64th St & Bell Ave. These days I have my own trimmer set and do my own haircuts at home. Thanks for sharing this place.
I was loving this video until I saw his "Friends don't let friends drive Fords" sticker. Just kidding 😂. Another great video showing the incredible people and places that make the Appalachians a wonderful place.

Awesome video! We love this guy. Total old school the best. Would love to see him on our next trip to Tennessee. Thanks for sharing this awesome story. William
Hello, John! I just want to thank you for all the hard work you are putting in on every video by showing the entire world how we used to do things down here in the south back in the good old days. You go way far already forgotten places...alright! sometimes in the middle of nowhere that nobody have known if it wasn't because of you who is the one taking the money & time to rediscover our deep Southern American culture & bring it back to life. I see no more Confederate flags being flown out there, which makes me feel really sad...it's not about hate, it's about heritage tradition & culture...that tells you about all the things we've lost along the way....I personally encourage you to keep on working hard everyday to help the American people understand the true value & meaning of what heritage & history must have in our lives...Never give outsiders the opportunity to change your culture language or soul...America is the greatest country in the world for sure. America was founded on God guns & Freedom & We must keep it that way at any cost. Thanks again, John. I may find you on the road one of these days! You take care now! God bless.
I think I had seen gary in Red Dead Redemption 2 before lol. The barbers are the best in that game and seeing these old fashioned barbers still around today is very cool and awesome to see :). Great video and happy to see all the happy faces for the barber shop :) Cheers :).
This has been one of my favorite video's so far.......what a wonderful man of God. Love the barbershop, what a collection he has. I can see why he is such a popular guy. By the way, I think the haircut he gave you John looked fantastic!!!!
A fellow garbage man he is all right What was his business name of the trash company . I’m 62 and own and run Rolloff dumpster’s every day for the last 25 years here in central Illinois lol . Love your videos and love this shop great job
Thirty-four minutes of sheer Heaven. What an interesting man, and his shop is wonderful. Nothing like this in England.
Lol SHEER heaven. That's a good one. 😆
