At impact you want straight elbows. It is near impossible to get your back elbow all the way straight but at impact it should be 170 degrees then become straight just after impact. If you were chopping down the tree the way you said not to do is actually what you want to do to get the most bat speed. Although in a baseball you do not want the Barrell to get away from you originally a straight arm release or extention of the bat is critical during contact

The batting tip that helped me the most as a young hitter many years ago was to start my swing with the bat lying on top of my shoulder. The swing flows perfectly from this position. Young hitters shouldn't have to think of too much while at bat. Starting from the optimum position cures a lot of ills in the swing without having to think about mechanics while hitting. Try it and you'll be amazed at how simple and effective this tip is.
This is golden information. Bookmarked this so I remember to maintain and how to maintain a short swing and give myself as much room for error as possible as a hitter regardless if im late or early on a pitch. This will definitely reduce strikeouts since i tend to get alittle long at times. Thank you!
Really really like the foam roller idea. I am also very appreciative of how you break it down because this is also how I coach. This makes it easier for me to explain to players 9-10yr old.
Good video. I like calling it turning the barrel and staying inside. Which gives the batter a bigger hitting window. Even if batter is a little late he's got a chance to hit the ball still. I still see coach's teaching swing down on the ball which is a push swing and mainly a upper body swing.
I love these drills with instant feed back. My 10 year old love doing drills but can develop bad habits if I don’t watch every swing. These types of drills he can do on his own and know when what he is doing is not correct. Love it keep up the good work.

VERY helpful! I've been trying to practice not hitting directly to shortstop, I think I'm either swinging too early or I'm not getting under the ball enough. I'm going to try this drill out tomorrow and see if I can hit it for a double or triple! Great video as usual Coach Justin!
Glad to gear it was helpful! Yes, practice the drill and get lots of reps. Get used to staying inside the ball and you'll no longer hit as many ground balls to the SS.

This is a great video! It's easy to watch and talk about but the batter them shelf may think they are doing it correct. A great tool so the batter understands what they are doing wrong is use the swingrail.
Hi, my son plays for Basic high school in Henderson, Nevada. He uses a Easton Mako bat. The bat is not old, and it seems like it has never had any pop to it. As you know the bat was very expensive, but I want him to have the best chance at the plate. Seems now the Makos are already the bat of the past. What bat would you recommend I get for him in 2018 that has the most pop. Also a video on why little league, club ball, and high school baseball went away from wood bats to metal bb core baseball bats. I used wood through my days in little league, and high school. Why did they change this? Its also more dangerous for the pitcher's having that ball drilled at them from these composite bats. Sorry for the long comment. Love your videos

Hey Justin Id love to see a detailed video about the use of hands in a swing. With all the new age thought of body angle, and hip drive. I feel like hands are getting completely ignored. Heck Josh Donaldson said on one of his videos he doesnt even feel his hands. I think that kind of info to a young player is very misleading. And it causes them to spin out because all they do is fire the hips and spin the shoulders. These teachings just seem crazy to me. A hockey slap shot, or tennis back hand your coach would never tell you to just fire the hips and rotate through the swinging motion.

I've learned a lot about mechanics from your videos and others on RUclips. The instruction I've been searching for recently is how to coach "responding to disappointment." What can I, as a coach, do or say to a young player (age 7-12) who pouts (or throws a temper tantrum, or otherwise responds negatively) after striking out, being put out, struggling to find the strike zone, or making an error. I always emphasize attitude and effort, but some of my most talented players struggle to keep their heads in the game and MOVE ON after disappointment. Thank you!
Aside from hitting drills like the one in this video, you can roll different areas of your body for prehab and rehab. It's called Self Myofascial Release if you'd like to do more research. You can roll just about everything from your upper back, hamstrings, quads, IT band, calves, etc.

Hey Justin, lately I've been practicing my throwing for about a week now, and have been getting a lot better at throwing, fielding, catching, power, and accuracy. i don't have hitting down yet, because I don't have a tee or a net to hit it in. Also, I live in a small neighborhood, and don't want to hit anyone's house. Yesterday, i decided to go all in, I'm talking 10X on throwing for like a good hour. Today, when i woke up, my arms are "weird". When I lifted my arms, and tried to stretch them, it's like sore, but like a popping sound.(This is in the rotatory cuffs by the way) what are your thoughts on this? Is it bad or something I should worry about like tendinitis? Or is it because I might have done my throwing mechanics wrong?
Good question. I would take a few days off and see how you feel. You always want to be gradual when scaling up your training. If you go from the couch to throwing for an hour the next day, your game is gonna be sore and hanging. It's better to progress - throw for 15 mins, then 20 mins, then 30 mins, etc. Take a few days off to rest and if it feels like PAIN and not soreness, I would get it looked at by a doctor to be safe. It could be from poor mechanics, but most likely it's from overdoing it.

How about in regards to slowpitch softball. I hear a lot of guys say "You need to drop the baseball inside out swing it doesnt work in softball, because you need to generate your own power. " I dont fully understand what that means i feel like i produce plenty of power keeping everything tight within my rotation.
I don't know much about slowpitch softball, but the concepts remain the same. You're still stronger and quicker when everything is tight to your body. I wouldn't worry about what they say. They'll be jealous when you're hitting dingers while they're struggling!

Hey Coach Justin, I used to be an alright batter but this season I didn't get one hit. I don't know what happened but I just, got into a huge slump. This season we had to get new bats because of the regulations so I got a new bat. I didn't really pay attention to the bat so I got a drop 8 32 inch Easton bat. I used to have a 31 inch drop 10. I don't know if that's the problem or not. Do you think the bat could be the problem?
You get a thumbs up from me just for using swinging an axe as an example. That is something I try to use as an example. Then I realize most of my kids have never used a big axe 😐. I wish I could bring an axe to practice 🙂
Brae use a Pool Noodle.. We would "borrow " the Orange construction cones all over the streets and stick a thin rod inside (so that the rod is sticking up)

With all due respect I believe you are exactly wrong re your "inside the ball" concept. A much better lesson is seen in Manny Ramirez swing. Ditto for George Brett, Henry Aaron, etc. All can be viewed on you tube. "Baseball Rebellion Swing Breakdown" is a good place to start. Your method has the leading arm FAR too bent and close to the body! You can view and stop action the swings on the Baseball Rebellion swing breakdown on you tube and see the way the leading arm should look. I led the nation in college, too many years ago, but I still know what the proper swing looks like, and the "inside the ball" swing is definitely not it.
Curious. Everyone teaches to keep your arm attached to hip during rotation but watching Ted Williams and George Brett they let their elbow get away. Ted williams swing seems longer and he extend the elbows almost fully at contact. You can find the video under Ted Willians slow motion swing. What do you think about it? I’m asking because I work with my son quite a bit and his back elbow was racing forward until I had hit think about keeping the hands attached and then he had more power but he’s 5’8 1/2 and only 90 pounds. Skinny. The longer swing seems more natural.

Yes, that's solid. It's even better if you can do it in real games against real pitching, not slow BP pitches

If you're not used to the bat then that definitely could be a part of the problem.
Its crazy but theres a similar thing for the golf swing. Seems like coming from the inside is universal

A pool noodle is a great idea as well as the cone idea. You can also use PVC pipe. That's much cheaper

Absolutely this will work for softball. There's not much (if any) difference between a good softball and good baseball swing.
