He just knows he has a phenomenal shot, so if he has a look, in most cases the best chance for his team to get a goal is if he lets it fly. Different players, different eras, both great. And 24 of the top 25 highest goals per season among NHL players were before the 2000's. Guess who cracked the top 25 from 2000 and after...? Alex Ovechkin! Scoring was DEFINITELY easier back then, than today! Ovechkin is the GOAT of goal scoring!
Guarantee you he has the most shots taken also. I love the player too but he shoots more than anyone ever. Prob 10 times more than Wayne

What amazes about Ovechkin is obviously the shot and goals but also his durability. Ovi has always played a physical game and he rarely gets hurt. He is basically a linebacker on skates.

Я думаю, что если он не успеет и ему не хватит около 10-15 шайб или меньше, то они могли бы договориться с Вашингтоном о минимальном контракте на один сезон. Чтобы платежку не забивать, и чтобы дать еще время для Сани на то, чтобы побить рекорд Грецки.

@@kovrikl Единственной проблемой может стать сам Ови. Он уже сказал Леонсису и команде, что, не смотря на важность рекорда, он не собирается и не будет докатывать его в 3-4 звене или только на большинствах, что хочет приносить реальную пользу команде, а не быть пятым колесом и обузой. И что как только он не сможет эту пользу приносить - он уйдет. Так что единственное, что может помешать, - это травмы или возраст, который неожиданно накатит на него. Но пока не похоже, что такое произойдет в ближайшие 2-3года.

In the 80s, the performance per match ranged from 7 to 8 goals, and the most “fun” season was the 1981/82 championship - 8.03 goals (it was in that year that Gretzky set an all-time record - 92 goals in the regular season). In the first half of the 90s, the performance in the NHL was slowly declining (with the exception of the 1992/93 championship), and in the 1996/97 season there was a sharp decrease in this indicator - to 5.83 goals per game. In the 2003/04 regular season, the performance dropped to a terrible 5.14 goals.
This may be due to increased competition in the NHL. After the collapse of the USSR, many hockey players who played in the countries of the Warsaw Pact moved to play in the NHL. Ovechkin played in the NHL with more competition than Gretzky. But you can compare the results of these players, at the time when the Soviet players started playing in the NHL.
Gretzky played 373 games in the NHL from 1993 to 1998 and scored 120 goals (averaging 0.32 goals per game) at the age of 32-36. Ovechkin, aged 32-36 (from 2017 to 2022), played 353 games in the NHL and scored 222 goals (an average of 0.63 goals per game).
Gretzky played 721 NHL games and scored 302 goals from 1988 to 1998 (averaging 0.42 goals per game) at the age of 27-36. Ovechkin, aged 27-36 (from 2012 to 2022), played 721 games in the NHL and scored 441 goals (an average of 0.61 goals per game).
During these periods, Ovechkin won against Gretzky in the number of goals scored.
In addition, rules contributed to increased performance in the 1980s. Goalkeepers wore narrow shin guards, less sturdy helmets, and play skates, rather than goalie skates, as they are now. Video replays in the league were introduced only in 1991, when Gretzky had already crossed the equator of his career and stopped scoring goals with automatic bursts. In 1993, they changed the rules for playing with a high stick - it was forbidden to lift it above the crossbar, and before that it was allowed to swing up to the shoulder. In 1996, when Gretzky was three years away from retiring from the sport, a trapezoid was introduced - they outlined a section of ice on which the field was forbidden to contact the goalkeepers.
Ovechkin also won against Gretzky in the number of seasons in which they became the best scorers.

Овечкин - истинный капитан, лидер и опора команды, легенда мирового хоккея. Великолепный мастер, обладающий внушительным опытом и арсеналом навыков. Но что особо удивляет и вызывает восхищение, так это отсутствие у него спортивного эгоизма и чувства собственного величия.

Gordie Howe has been my all time great since back in the 60's and watching him play at Olympia stadium in Detroit. But there is no better player I'd rather see move past Gordie other than Alex Ovechkin. A tremendous and domineering hockey player whose talents are out of this world. I wish Gordie could have been there for #802.

The level of class shown by teams and fanbases during this march to 802 has been off the charts. Its the kind of thing that gives you hope for the world. A handshake line for a regular season GOAL? I don't care if its history. That is the epitome of class and sportsmanship. The business and showbiz "entertainment" of the NHL makes me not want to watch anymore. Moments like this remind me why I fell in love with the game to begin with.

He's 37, hasn't slowed down at all, really, and has been healthy his entire career. If he continues the way he has, he's going to beat Gretzky. And he's the type of player to not retire until he does. He'll be like Jagr and Chara. Playing until he absolutely can't.

Gordie Howe also had 174 goals in the WHA, so actually 975 pro goals of which only 801 occured in the NHL. The WHA and the NHL merged in 1979. The current NHL Stanley Cup Champions was originally a WHA team; the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche franchise...

у Гретцки самого российские корни. Никто по этой теме заморачиваться не будет. Политика и деньги у американцев по особому связаны)) Но НХЛ с приходом профи со всего мира и изменением правил стала очень сложной лигой. И для подержания интереса тут нужны новые рекорды, новые звезды и т.п. Я даже думаю, что если до 40 лет не дойдет до рекорда по здоровью, то его тупо до 45 подпишут и будут выпускать в большинстве на гол. Этот и следующий сезоны покажут, насколько 900 реально

His team needs to understand that he wants to earn these next milestone goals, he clearly didn't want the easy empty net goal despite it being his record breaking 802. He wants them on merit.
The Capitals should have kept him off the ice for that.
