If Anthony had shot Ducky in a robbery then Kendrick would have grown up without a father and could’ve easily gone the wrong path and died in a gun fight. Since he didn’t and Ducky became friends with Anthony, Anthony didn’t go to jail for robbery and started a label in which he signed a young Kendrick and Kendrick found out the whole story. It’s an amazing track and amazing story.

Ducky is Kenderick Lamar father and Anthony aka top dawg is like a second father to Kenderick Lamar the whole time Kenderick Lamar was going to the studio he didn't know the story of his father and Top Dawg until one day Kenderick brought his father to the studio and boom thats when they told Kenderick the story of how they meet. Kenderick father didnt know he he was sign to TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment).

The beat switches in Duckworth feel like perspective changes in a movie! My favorite use of it is the “Ostavi Trag” sample beat that starts when describing Anthony’s criminal history, then it switches into something else while talking about Ducky and his life. It comes back during their encounter, creating a looming feeling of potential danger.
And the way it lasts until the final lines of the song ties it in with the whole story so well! Because now we have additional context on re-listen that from the moment Anthony’s life became more complicated and fraught with potential consequences, it will still somehow lead to the miraculous ending of Kendrick being alive.

to me kendrick brings the art of rapping to a new level. it's not just about the rhymes and words, his flow, hus everchanging rythms, syncopation, he uses words almost like a drummer, weaving in and out of the musical phrases created by the beat.
his many voices, pitches, and impersonations are also noteable, bringing harmonic depth to his rapping in a way that still counts as rapping and not just straight up singing.
when i listen to his work, i find it satiafying that every choice and details surrounding his music are purposeful and intentional.
kendrick isn't the only rapper to do these things, not even the first, and arguably not even the best. but he does it all, brilliantly
kendrick albums haven't been in my rotation for months now, and I've moved on to other rappers and music in general. rap is an amazing genre and the sounds of underground hiphop nowadays is some of the most experimental and bold music being recorded today. and there are lots of other rappers to enjoy
but kendrick remains an artist that pushes the boundaries within the mainstream, and i like that he exists
    aside from rap
i personally have been really enjoying ambient music lately, noise music, glitch music. weird stuff. I've also always loved shoegaze, and post-hardcore is also a very fun genre to dive into imo. i also like jazz especially the trippy spiritual jazz players like alice coltrane, john coltrane, and pharoah sanders. and lastly, i also like hiphop
    anyways bye

I wouldn’t say you have to do Good Kid Maad City in one vid. You could do it the same way you did this album, two songs a video. I think the reason some people might be saying they want you to do it all at once is because GKMC is a concept album, it’s basically a movie. So there’s a continuous story from beginning to end. As long as you keep that in mind you should be fine regardless of how many videos it takes you to finish it.

You really need to do Good Kid Maad City all in one setting, even if you release the videos individually. Each of Kendricks albums mirrors a form of media. Damn is a magazine, Section.80 is a book, To Pimp a Butterfly is a Poem, Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers is a play, and Good Kid Maad City is a movie. And more of a Quinton Tarantino style when it comes to the timeline. You will get a ton more out of it if you do it all in one sitting and follow the narrative.

You’re right about Top Dawgs influence on Kendrick. He was signed with TDE for every album thus far, ending after Mr Morale so the Drake beef is the first work he’s done under his new deal, and he used part of it to defend Top Dawg and TDE. (Dunno is full deal but it looks like he owns his masters and just has a distribution deal directly with Universal)

very smart on the end of DUCKWORTH there: "Because if Anthony killed Ducky, Top Dawg could be servin' life
While I grew up without a father and die in a gunfight", referring Top Dawg as Anthony when talking about the what if scenario because it's in the past and Anthony hasn't founded his label TDE, then later said that "Top Dawg could be serving life" referring to Anthony still be in prison now because Top Dawg is Anthony now and if Kendrick grew up without his father he'll get into gang activities more and unfortunate enough to lost his life.
The message really is just "Fate"

Kendrick is Compton through and through. “good kid, m.A.A.d. City” is a good spotlight on where he came from, and you’re right that he grew up in the rough shit. He talks a lot about trying to avoid being gang affiliated in his neighborhood, and that sometimes being more dangerous than aligning with one side or the other. Something I can’t relate to whatsoever but he paints a pretty detailed and vivid picture in that album.

Not sure if you're going through Kendrick's material in a specific order and working back through toward the earlier stuff, but I reckon you'd find "Rigamortus" from his first album worth a listen - I don't quite know if it could be called "technical" but the flow is quite tight and precise with intricate(ish) rhyming across different parts of each line, over a beat sampled from an old brass jazz tune. See what you think:

For background context, Kendrick is from Compton. Kendrick had affiliation with the Westside Pirus (a branch from the larger Bloods gang).
Hope you are able to find the time to be able to do a full video for good kid, m.a.a.d. city. I definitely feel like it its the kind of album that requires a full, uniterrupted listen at least once to be able to completely experience it. Hope you also listen to DAMN. in reverse order and see how you feel about it

  • @Wignut
    @Wignut 2 месяца назад +1

Here's an explanation of the whole "play it in reverse" aspect of DAMN. Us Kendrick fans are known to dig really deep into his lyrics, to a comedic degree sometimes, but the Collector's Edition just being a reversed tracklist and all the hints throughout the album about reversing it kinda solidifies it for me.
In BLOOD, the beginning asks us "Is it Wickedness? Is it Weakness? You decide". That phrase and what happened in DUCKWORTH adds context to the how the album plays out in both tracklists.
The normal track order is the Path of Weakness where Anthony didn't kill Ducky (what happened in real life). The Old Lady in BLOOD saying "You have lost your life" is God telling Kendrick that he has lost his faith in him and himself. It starts out with Kendrick in a dark place mentally due to his fame as a rapper and ends with Kendrick finding and accepting his faith again.
In reverse (Collector's Edition), it poses the question "What if Ducky didn't offer Anthony kindness (kill him with kindness from GOD)? What if he Anthony ended up robbing the KFC and killing Ducky (kill him with diamonds). This is the Path of Wickedness, where Kendrick grew up fatherless and without an avenue to being a rapper. This path starts with Kendrick as religious in an earlier age, but he spirals down a darker path where he becomes more engrained with crime and gang banging. At the end, when wickedness Kendrick lowered his guard to offer to help the Old Lady, this time it was a setup from a rival gang to kill him. God wasn't there this time because he abandoned God and was deep in sin by this point.
With the added context, it changes the meaning of some songs. Where DNA is about Weakness Kendrick's earlier state of mind. It is in turn an anthem for Wickedness Kendrick at the end of his path.
In FEAR, Carl's call is completely different. In the Path of Wickedness, this comes early so Carl is consoling Kendrick about his father dying and warning Kendrick not to be like Anthony since he is cursed due to not being with god. This ended up fortelling Wickedness Kendrick's fate as well. In the Path of Weakness, Carl instead comforts Kendrick due to his loneliness and tells Kendrick to find God again since his darkness could be from God chastising him.
These paths are physically shown in the Loyalty music video where Weakness Kendrick is being tortured by the Mob Leader, Wickedness Kendrick. Since Loyalty is around the middle of the album, they would be passing each other here.
If you saw any comments during the rap beef about Kendrick fans being clinically insane, this is why lol.
Can't wait for your next reaction, I love seeing your opinions on the album 💪

I recommend listening to some of tyler the creators music, alot of it is fusion hip hop with his arguably best album being igor is explicitly not made to be rap album but with all of his music it tends to tell a story over the course of the albums, one thing to note though is that his first 4ish albums are quite dark and unpolished (not saying bad in anyway, infact his 3rd album wolf is my second favourite of his) and all conect together for example the first three of his albums tell a connected story. For Good Kid... If you CAN'T do a single sitting, I would try not splitting it up too much. Maybe 4 songs in 1 sitting (you can even split the video into 2).
I think one suggestion, though, would be that once you've finished your reactions for an album, just listen to the albums as a whole on your own and maybe do a video of just your impressions after secondary full playthroughs.

I really wish you listened to Mr Morale next. This album is really a deep dive into his soul that is so theraupethic. It can really help to understand who he is inside and i think this would help you while listening to his other works. If not Morale, then i guess you would enjoy To Pimp A Butterfly the most. It's a great fusion between hip hop and jazz and here you will hear A TON of real instruments. (same as in Morale but not Good Kid M.A.A.D City)

It’s a DAMN good album, though in my opinion his others are better. As to future videos, my suggestion would be to try doing one album in one sitting (maybe GKMC, it lends itself to that more readily than the rest of them), then comparing the experiences to see which you prefer. That’s just my suggestion though

I felt the same way with God…I like it fine, but Kendrick is so good that it’s like an A- among A pluses so it’s still a great listen just not my favorite.
