Mac is one of the best hip hop artists ever, along with Kendrick. Mac is one of those artists who reinvented himself on every project, no two albums sound the same. I think you would really love his final album before he passed, Swimming(there’s a companion album to Swimming called Circles, which released later, but definitely listen to Swimming first)

Absolutely love mac miller

This is from the bad era of Mac miller. It took a while for him to grow into himself as an artist. If you want some better Mac miller, I recommend listening to the albums faces, swimming, and circles. Swimming and circles are basically a 2 part album so you gotta hear swimming first if you listen to those two.

"I Can See" off of his posthumous album "Circles" might very well be my favorite song of all time! It's not a hip hop song at all, but it chokes me up every time. His music got more introspective & emotional as he grew as an artist. Digging the reactions man!

Drake KNEW logically he could never beat Kendrick in a battle, and it’s not even close. Drake’s monstrous ego is his worst enemy. Not even being walked down like this changed anything in his mind, but it changed everything in terms of how he’s viewed by most in the community. Kendrick is so dangerous because not only can he out rap Drake by a mile, he can also reach a millions. And PS - Drake has deleted ALL of his diss tracks off of all his platforms.

I get that it’s your first reaction to him and you might want to get to know who he is before fully diving in, maybe, an album, but I absolutely recommend to start from his record Swimming, if you want to get into Mac Miller. Singles, especially the older ones, really don’t paint the whole picture of what type of artist he became over the years: his development has been one of the best ever seen in hiphop, and became the special artist (artist even before rapper) that he was. Of course people have their preferences, but that’s what I recommend if you want to understand why people love him so much still. So it’d be lovely to see you react to something like Swimming. It would also be better to listen to it all in one time, as a whole, but that’s your choice of course, and if that’s the way you prefer to listen to it, it’s okay. Great video tho

Good news is even more heartbreaking as it was the single to his posthumous album. I have never been a huge fan but to an artist that said he'd die young even in his first major release it just felt like it was a death that left a heavy burden to be carried on by his family, by his ex, ariana grande, and by his fans that seen how much he could shine despite his constant drug usage that he said would be the end of him until it finaly was.

Mac Miller is my favorite arist of all time. I feel like i grew as Mac did. I was in early high school when KIDS dropped, was in my first long-term relationship when Divine Feminine was released, and lost my best friend to an OD same month Swimming was released. Mac was always there for me. Its tough knowing he wont have any more guidance for me as i grow older than he ever will be.

I used to watch this music video over and over when I was younger, Macs entire discography was very impactful for me and helped me through soo much turmoil RIP MAC ❤️

YES, glad you did this one. Love watching everyone’s face throughout the verse and the emotions evoked 😂❤ Clear indication of the winner. Epitome of a diss track. “6:16 in LA” was necessary to understand the warning and see there was indeed a mole considering how quickly Kendrick was able to respond to Drake about the same family topic.

The best part about Kendrick Lamar is his lyrical ability and his voice, it's the reason most of his songs are really good, the weird voices he does is just extremely pleasing for my ears, for no reason. Also it is almost a requirement for you to listen to the Heart part 1 to the Heart part 5, it is just a masterclass of rapping from Kendrick, each one is better then the last by a lot.

I’d recommend using lyric genius for your first few dozen songs at least. It’s really easy to miss most of the bars because rap is so self referential. You don’t have to of course just a suggestion lmao

I recommend listening to some of tyler the creators music, alot of it is fusion hip hop with his arguably best album being igor is explicitly not made to be rap album but with all of his music it tends to tell a story over the course of the albums, one thing to note though is that his first 4ish albums are quite dark and unpolished (not saying bad in anyway, infact his 3rd album wolf is my second favourite of his) and all conect together for example the first three of his albums tell a connected story. I think you would realy enjoy most of his music.

Not sure if you're going through Kendrick's material in a specific order and working back through toward the earlier stuff, but I reckon you'd find "Rigamortus" from his first album worth a listen - I don't quite know if it could be called "technical" but the flow is quite tight and precise with intricate(ish) rhyming across different parts of each line, over a beat sampled from an old brass jazz tune. I have not listened to rap in a long while, I’m 55. I had never heard a Kendrick song until I stumbled on “they not like us” and the rabbit hole began. Hooked on him now for a little while. Everyday listening to the Drake disses are electrifying.

The beat switches in Duckworth feel like perspective changes in a movie! My favorite use of it is the “Ostavi Trag” sample beat that starts when describing Anthony’s criminal history, then it switches into something else while talking about Ducky and his life. It comes back during their encounter, creating a looming feeling of potential danger. And the way it lasts until the final lines of the song ties it in with the whole story so well! Because now we have additional context on re-listen that from the moment Anthony’s life became more complicated and fraught with potential consequences, it will still somehow lead to the miraculous ending of Kendrick being alive.

What I love the most about DAMN is the fact that the order that you listen to it affects the message you get from it. It can either be a narrative of damnation or salvation.

You really need to do Good Kid Maad City all in one setting, even if you release the videos individually. Each of Kendricks albums mirrors a form of media. Damn is a magazine, Section.80 is a book, To Pimp a Butterfly is a Poem, Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers is a play, and Good Kid Maad City is a movie. And more of a Quinton Tarantino style when it comes to the timeline. You will get a ton more out of it if you do it all in one sitting and follow the narrative.
