I was a watch collector for years but the prices are so high now and all these watch channels in my feed encourage me to buy $7000+ watches on a regular basis. How many people can do this? Don’t you have other expenses like mortgage payments or your kid’s college tuition? Feels like a bubble and I’m out of the game. Such a shame because I still have my grails.

One thing I've learned is just as there's buyer's remorse, there is also seller's remorse. Many decide to sell a watch only to kick themselves later down the road. And sometimes they even offer to buy the watch back. Or hunt for another one elsewhere. It is also true that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence and your story about the rugged dude wearing the more rugged watch reminded me of that. If you didn't already own it, had he been wearing yours I bet you still would have lusted after it. Both are great watches from a brand loaded with history. Neither one could be classified as a "mistake" purchase. Not by any means. YMMV. Keep up the fun content. I liked the video even before you reminded me!

I own the 915. Great watch!!!

    • @waterfordrs22
      @waterfordrs22 Год назад +2

It’s not a high horology piece. Power reserve isn’t a complication, it’s easily the most over rated spec on the market. A massive PR only matters if you never wear the watch. Many Panerai don’t even have a seconds hand let alone a date window- so how hard is it to set the time? Either way in order to get the full power reserve time, you’ve got a couple options- one is you need to wear the bell out of your watch for several days, for a full work day and then some, or you need to do a whole lot of time winding the watch. All that just so you can put it away for a week and still come back to it running? Way overrated. The time spent winding a watch with such a PR, you could have set the date in time and been on to other things faster.
Don’t buy a watch based on specs alone.

    • @waterfordrs22
      @waterfordrs22 Год назад

@@albertopolini1970 If you’re wearing it actively for almost ten hours a day, sure it’s going to wind itself sufficiently to make it to the next day. That would be the case even if the power reserve was something more modest such as say 50-70 hours. No problem. You are wearing the watch daily and possibly relatively active. For someone who simply rotates through several watches a day or week (not my style) they would likely need to spend those three or four minutes winding the watch by hand. It’s a bit of a false economy if the watch is mostly sitting.

Funny about what you said about grade 2 titanium. I had the original blue pelagos that uses grade 2. I remember telling someone that it honestly felt like plastic at times. Like, it was so light, but there was something about the metal that almost felt fake. I couldn't quite describe it. Then I later had a Grand Seiko snowflake, and that titanium was luxurious and soft... wild what a difference it makes.

177 all the way! You can have the Unitas 6497 movement serviced by any competent watchmaker. As we know, Panerai never made watches (except for the Egiziano) but only supplied the dials. Rolex made the case and movement for Panerai. Also used were Cortebert and Angelus movements so it certainly would have made sense for Giuseppe Panerai (pretending he was alive and still owned Panerai today) to equip the watches with a unitas 6497 movement. Let’s not forget that these were bare-bones military watches made for human torpedo frogmen!

The best solution to this conundrum is to keep both. The polished one, always on a fine leather strap. And the titanium with its rugged good looks on a rubber strap or that really cool strap that you have on in the video. They serve different purposes, so keep both.
But if I were in this enviable situation and could only keep one I'd keep the titanium one. It looks so damn good.

Had a 176 for years (similar watch, without second hand of the 177). Issue I had was it's a one-trick pony. Polished/brushed watches have more variety in appearance when swapping straps. And on the strap point, finding Ti buckles isn't the easiest, and they never come on or with a strap, even from the vast majority of the best makers. That said, a simple fiberglass brushing makes it look new again, and the patina is killer as it develops. So, I'd have one again today without hesitation; just not as my primary. Daily now is the Palm Beach 466, which ticks most boxes for me other than the painted dial.

I want to say that I have wanted a Panerai for years, not necessarily this model, and finally pulled the trigger (also an impulse buy). I actually get a lot of compliments on it (especially from watch enthusiasts). I bought my luminor GMT on a steel bracelet and it matches to Panerai database but I never opened it or looked inside it. It’s on the steel bracelet. I personally love it because it has a big and boisterous Italian personality just like me. Over time the polish on the face has maintained its glimmer and shine while the casing gets scuffed from use over the years and dulls. I haven’t tried any other straps because the steel bracelet is rare and lovely.

After a deep dive into PAMs, I've found a 111 that could be mine for a nice price. Note, I plan to wear this mainly on summer season, meaning I can wear t-shirts and other light clothing so that the bulkiness will not interfere with the winter jacket's sleeve or anything, and the shiny steel case will have it's opportunity to glimmer in the sun.
For winter I have thin Panerai inspired microbrand watch - a titanium Andersmann Classic, darker tone and warmer to the skin. Having a 177 as a winter watch could be an (expensive) option as well, maybe in the future? :D

I'm currently deep into Panerai research, and it's actually beyond confusing with all the references, so it's understandable that the PAM177 slipped past you. I always thought a 44mm Pam on my barely 7-inch wrist would be too big, but having recently tried on a 45mm Rad I realised I was worrying about nothing! Ideally I'd prefer a 42mm Luminor but I don't care for the 1950 case shape, so I've narrowed my options down to a PAM111 or PAM183, both sandwich dial, exhibition case back, same movement, effectively the same watch just Luminor vs Radiomir, but the Titanium PAM177 is also a contender. The hunt continues...
My view - Keep the PAM177... because it's a better looking / feeling watch 🙂

Two excellent videos (915 and 177). I don’t think you have buyers remorse. I think you’re becoming Paneristi. You like the 915 so much, you immediately start looking for your next Panerai.
I found this really useful. I was thinking a lot about getting a 915 and tried one on (loved it) but there was also a 564 Titanium 8 Days for sale which I was watching too. The sellers discounted that this week and it was too good to resist any longer and it’s now on my wrist. Love it! Can’t now justify a 915… yet…

PAM177 owner here, my vote goes to the 177 (I'm biased since it's my favorite watch), BUT I would very much like a polished Luminor for dressier occasions and leave the Titanium one on to daily duties. However, overall I would very much like the blue dial Marina but from a value point of view my next watch is going to be Grand Seiko SBGR321

Keep the 177 for sure, i would sell the 915 for a 2 hander base model like a 112 or if you like the newer stuff then a 914... better yet a 372 if your wrist can handle it..

The 177 is iconic imo. It was one of the first watches I chased and never was able to find one. Then I began to think about the balance between dressier and playful or tool looks. That’s why I wound up getting the 1351 which is a titanium watch

When I bought my Omega Seamaster Professional 300M in the Chrome dial color way, I had a lot of mixed feelings. It was my first true luxury watch, it was the watch I wanted, and it marked a significant moment in my life. But the honeymoon was rocky: I spent a substantial amount of money on a watch, I bought an unpopular color way, it felt as if it was as EDC as I first believed it to be. 4 years later, I'm wearing it almost everyday, swapping between rubber and bracelet. I've grown to love it and even enjoy the dings and scratches it has accumulated, giving it a unique patina to me.

I daily wear a 176 G series. Call me biased but I 100% prefer the matte toned down full titanium over the polished SS. The titanium patinas very well. I use a white ink eraser or super fine steel wool on small scratches that bother me.

When I decided to go panerai, I wanted an open caseback, sandwich dial, time only manual wind. It was the PAM0111 that I wanted, until I saw the 177 - the matte titanium and dial felt like panerai. And preowned for 4K? Yes please. Still my only panerai. And may be the only one I ever “need.”

I don't see it as a buyer's remorse. I see the discovery of the 177 as a different experience altogether and should be separate from your ownership of the 915. The range of Panerai watches is so vast that you'd get a different kind of feel with different ones, even with the same case designs but with different materials or even finishes. (You should try one of those PAMs with brushed Brunito steel. Still steel but feels and wears very differently). I suggest keeping and enjoying both for a while.

They are way too similar to keep them both IMO. The ti version is much cooler and it sounds like it gives you that Panerai feel/experience more than the steel. No one gets a Panerai to feel subtle or refined. Go big (ti) and cash out on the shiny steel.

I have a number of Panerai including a very old Luminor from post WWII. The Panerai is a classic with history. Just getting one or two in the collection is great but not needed. I have Rolex, Omega, Breitling and Seiko as well. Nothing makes me excited any more. To me they are all just time pieces. Most of my collection are historic like the Panerai. But the Omegas are 007 James Bond from the beginning to the last movie. This included the gold Gruen from the very first two movies. The Rolex are also collected because of the 007 movies. My father sat my younger brother and myself down inside the DB9 Austin Martin for the movie Goldfinger. By the way, Panerai started out with the ETA 6497 movement way up into I think either the 1990s or early 2000s. So the copies are very accurate to the originals.

Personal preference. 915 better overall imo with straps more catered to day to day and dressier look. 177 more rugged and more one dimension even with different straps. Just depends what you’re looking for. I think you have way better options to achieve this rugged look from Pam or different brands than 177. I recently got the 511 precious gold but was going to go for 915

  • @frankv7068

Keep the 915, I have the 111 you made me re-think the same thing watching the 177 on you but after watching the titanium on your wrist by the end of the video I just like the shinier one more. It’s more original, looks more luxurious and the contrast of rugged strap and dial against the shiny bezel makes it pop just right. The titanium looks rugged but it also looks cheap and nit genuine for some reason, better yet keep the 915 and get a titanium PAM01305 but it might be too big at 47mm.

Good to see a watch youtuber who isn't jumping onto the "I hate panerai" bandwagon. Beautiful watches you have there. Maybe keep both? One for coffeehouse outings and the other for jungle trouble? By the way, shouldn't a quintessential Panerai be 47" and base? Maybe a 372?
And thanks for recommending bosphorus leather. They do have beautiful selections.

Strap wise: ostrich leather is beautiful but for every leather chosen there’s a visual impact:
1: plain (high quality, silky smooth, etc.)
2: ostrich leg: (very complex patterns: rough scales and/or feather plucked: very affirmatif statement), a bit like horned alligator
3: ostrich feather plucked: very rich pattern which we often see on Patek Philippe watches(tobacco colored)
Of course these are all available in a variety of colors.
These in high grade come around: $200 + figures, waiting time is a few months!
Sadly we didn’t see your properly ! 😢
Each of your watches have a special look, if you can try to keep both 👍

Both watches look awesome for different reasons the first has the shiny new look and will great as long a you keep it looking shiny and new ,but when it gets dinged and scratched it will look it’s appeal , but eventually it will develop what my South African fiancé refers to as ( hoeding) I’ve surely spelled it wrong) patina ,mileage, attitude . The titanium one already has it , its the truck that you got for 500 bucks and has 500,000 miles on it and still goin strong !!!

I have PAM118. Like 177 it's Titanium but with a tobacco dial. I wouldn't trade it for new one. Not about specs its about feel at end of day. Also in house Panerai has no credibility. ETA is cheaper and easier to service plus vintage and neo vintage Panerai never had in house movements. It was always Rolex or ETA. The brand is about dials, lume, and cases at the end of the day. So go for feel not for movement specs.

  • @drkesrf

The luminor case design is by far my favorite of all time. I used to own one. However their new “in house” movements are pretty much still 3rd party. They are way overpriced at retail. Getting a preowned at a discount is the way to go. Glad you found one you love.

Based on your own words used to describe the watches, it seems pretty obvious you prefer the 177's brushed aesthetic.
Objectively there is no right or wrong answer here. It's entirely personal. Watches have never been about specs alone, especially when deciding between 2 near identical watches.
The one thing I'd say before you fully commit to swapping for the 177 is be absolutely sure you're ok with the extra thickness. That's one of those things that's easy to look past when you see it on someone else or in pictures but might hit different on your own wrist. Give it time to consider.
