    They cut costs.
1- Panerai is not COSC certified anymore.
2- Just very specific models have sapphire caseback and decorated movements.
3- No more big wooden boxes.
4- Panerai entry level models have very simple manual winding movements with no hack for the seconds.
5- they increased the prices in 50% in the last 4 years.
6- the majority of the models have low water resistance. What is a contradiction for a brand with nautical history.
Despite all that, their CEO does not give importance to enthusiasts’ opinion. They are aiming for the richest guys with no knowledge of watches.
At America’s Cup, Luna Rossa’s capitais was wearing a Casio G Shock. Not a Panerai Submersible Luna Rossa.

I have owned a few Panerai watches over the years. I used to even travel to meetings of Panerai collectors. I loved the history of the brand and the unique shape of the watch case from other brands. And you know by the dial this was a utility watch. They are not for everyone. The cost has increased significantly from what they used to sell for. When I started collecting the entry level models were selling for around $4000. Many Panerai watches are too big for the wrist of many would-be collectors. The cases are also thick. Having said that they are nice watches. Just not everyone's cup of tea. They also don't hold their value on selling. That is good news for buyers, but not for the sellers. I also find there is a lack of ADs and boutiques in my area. So even if a collector was interested in buying a Panerai, what jeweler could they visit to see them?

    • @overbuiltlimited
      @overbuiltlimited 2 месяца назад +1

Same here. Visited Florence a few months ago and went to the AD there. I bought a 10 Giorni (days). There’s something about the blue dial and strap that catches the eye because I have never received more compliments on a watch. Something like ten in a three month span.
I also own a Sub. No one has ever noticed in nearly ten years. In the sixteen years of owning my Speedmaster I have received exactly one comment, which was to ask me why I was risking wearing the watch at work, so not really a compliment. I also own a Carbon Pam that flys under the radar as well.
So while the watch was expensive, I really like it. I don’t sell my watches, so resell value is less important to me. The watch will always remind me of my wonderful trip to Italy with my son.

Panerai is far and away my favorite watch brand and I own 5 of them despite having only a 6" wrist. However, I can agree with all of your points on why they are not popular, especially the prices. But I think the prices on some of the base pieces, which are my favorites anyway, and secondary market prices, if you're brave enough to buy from, are not so bad.
To me the enjoyment in wearing any watch comes down to what designs speak to you the most, and for me, Panerai has been the one brand where I just never get tired of the design. It doesn't matter to me how many other people are wearing it as long as I love wearing it, and I genuinely do enjoy wearing my PAMs more than any other brand I've worn.

Britt hi,......my first luxury watch I purchased over 15 years ago, my Panerai GMT 44mm on bracelet. I wanted something different, with heritage and history, and that makes a statement, and of course with high quality. I chose Panerai over the other luxury brands that everyone seemed to have at the time....Rolex, Omega, Tissot. I've recently switched out to a black rubber band, making the watch less weighty and more sporty. In addition to my Paneria, I have an antique Certina in 18K gold, a Seiko 5 Sport for knocking around, and most recent purchase last year was the Tudor BB 41 Heritage with Burgundy bezel on jubilee bracelet. But my "go to" watch is still my Panerai.....and considering getting another in the near future. Keep up the good work on the channel.

When he finally decided to sell it, I sorta hemmed and hawed. One day, when I visited, he asked me if I still liked his Panerai. When I answered in the affirmative, he pulled it from a drawer and gave it to me, "Here, it's yours." Turns out it was a counterfeit. The clasp malfunctioned and when he took it in for repair, his watchmaker suspected that it was a fake because, apparently, the clasp is a weak point on phony Panerais. He said the movement was a high quality Chinese fake, not a cheap one, but, the lesson here is, until he went into it, this counterfeit was so well made that, from the outside, it fooled a professional watchmaker.

The whole image of driving a hummer in the past 20 years has been due to compensating due to manhood insecurities. Great content but a slight advice. Favourites are supposed to be limited to certain watch brands you choose over others. When you call every 3rd watch brand your “favourite”, “freaking love them”, “couldn’t get enough of them”, it dilutes your personal taste down to i love watches. Nothing wrong with that, but when you are making an analysis video about them, then don’t give a bias in the beginning by saying you adore that brand and then it doesn’t hold any weight by the end of the video. Of course you like that brand hence you’re talking about it. But when we see your collection having the usual suspects it really dilutes your taste in watches as you’re buying the safe choices but love a lot of stuff.
I am positively reaching a little but your opinion holds value, if you have a positive one for everything with blanket statements then it will get diluted.

I think you are unfair about the history part. Panerai was asked to provide to italian army a watch for the frogmen
. While is true that italy was an axis power, it is also true that after the armistice a big chunk of the frogmen sided with the allies and for example they operated to avoid that some italian ships were captured by the Germans. Today all the modern Naval special forces are derived by the italian frogmens.

I never wear the watch under my cuff or jacket. Not like it can fit ! But it can just hulk smash anything and any person walking the opposite way should protect their watch because I’m swinging my arm away.
I bought a 1970s pocket watch with an eta 6497 which should be similar to what’s inside panerai. So it feels connected in a way. I am even tempted to put a vintage movement in my panerai if the original movement goes bad.
I don’t think it’s a watch to buy and invest or resell. Buy it for life and it can survive multiple lifetimes.

Love it or hate it. If you are a collector of say 10 to 15 watches, i think highly likely at least 1 pam will be in the collection. 18 years ago, got my 1st pam 90, then flipped it; got the 000; then flipped it and got the 111 and flipped it again. Finally now pam351 is with me. The interesting thing is, the pam 90 still occupies my mind from time to time. Like the first love who got away. I can buy another pam90 but it will not feel the same again. Sorry but i digress. Just speaking for myself, without a pam, the collection seemed incomplete.

@ that’s because their military application is a huge part of Panerai’s history and heritage. It speaks to the ruggedness that the brand seeks to project. Not so for Seiko, which has a much broader customer base. I have to say though, that if Seiko released a quality IJN commemorative watch, I would snap it up in a microsecond. Same is true for other WW2 combatants on either side. Technological history is technological history. No hangups for me.

Panerai never was and never will be a high volume mainstream Swiss manufacturer. They know what they are, and what they're not. I don't think Panerai has a 'problem' as such. I think a big bad Panerai is a refreshing addition to a large collection where you already have a range of boring 36-42mm watches, and the Panerai is a freak watch for when you just want to stick two fingers up to the watch snobs, and say "bite me"!

  • @michaelsweet4232
    @michaelsweet4232 2 месяца назад +4

Sales data from Panerai doesn't bear out this claim. Additionally, second-hand sales in the USA at places like SwissWatchExpo and JomaShop are quite robust (based on the quantity of Panerai that I see go trough their shops). Panerai may not be the smash hit it was when Stallone first made them famous.... but they still sell in large numbers. Their revenue has reached 750 million in 2024 with over 70,000 watches produced this year. That's about 10,000 more watches than Patek Philippe, for example. This topic appears to be a popular "video" for watch talking heads to make these days. Panerai bashing is popular in "watch talk" circles. However, it just isn't real. Like most things on RUclips. I think what happens is that Panerai, actually still being pretty popular with a loyal customer base, get's people clicking and these "Panerai is over" videos actually end up being highly clicked/watches videos for content makers. So they keep making this video. Try making a video about how Perrelet and how they are no longer popular and are actually in trouble and your click numbers will then actually prove your argument, as no one will bother to watch the video.

Hey Britt, I liked your video. I always had a Panerai in my collection sinds 2005, I just love the design and the heritage. Luckily I have a large wrist😁.At the moment, I have a Pam 573 and a Pam 01218 with the p9200( eta with Dubois Depraz chrono module). 80% of my watches are”in-house” movements, so normally that is one of the things I look for at this price point . So with the Pam 1218, it was the look of the watch that I loved, with the white dail it is a strap monster ,the dail has so much depth and blue accents makes it a great watch for my. But I also found the price way to high😢. So I search and found one for sale in Germany for € 7500 with a renowned jeweler(Bachmann & Scher). It was new, so I could register for the 8 year warranty 👌. My wife also always loved the look of my Panerai’s, she has a 38 mm due now and the proportions are just perfect for her. So buy what you like, try to get the best deal. Don’t become a watch snob, eta movement were in the first Panerai watches of the late ‘90 and are in much more watches then you think. It would nice if the brands were more open about it. Keep on making great videos 😎

Fair comments. I remember a few years ago my Rolex AD was showing me some brand new Panerai watches. The salesman was quite enthusiastic about them. I think it was the GMT variant I was looking at. But I remember being shocked by the slow roll date, a lot of play when adjusting the hands. It frankly could easily have been any watch with a $100 movement in it. Which for $10K or somewhere in that ballpark was completely unacceptable. I really don’t mind them, and am okay with the look. But seriously, I think they are way over priced, and I imagine they would depreciate like crazy. If someone gifted me one, I’d be happy to wear it from time to time. But there are so many better choices in this price range. Tudor, Omega, even IWC would be preferable. And JLC have some way better movements and overall quality. These need to be priced at or below Tag Heuer levels to be seriously considered.

I love the submersible! I thought it looked odd in photos, but when I tried it on, it just worked.
My complaint is that these watches are HEAVY, and Panerai only uses titanium in their larger (i.e., humongous) sizes.
In terms of other pluses, Panerai makes beautiful straps and bracelets, the boutiques are welcoming, and they have great swag. For those who can wear the larger watches, it's worth looking for some of the special editions that have unique case finishes or dials.
Perhaps the UK is different, but there are reputable pre-owned dealers in the US who sell Panerai. I'd agree that one would really have to be or know a reliable expert to collect the antique Panerai, like the decayed looking ones you showed, but that's also true of Rolex, Cartier, and others.

BP, T4YC: by way of analysis........
Big watches were hot, but Panerai has found themselves at the front of the backlash as tastes change. Plus many fashion / shopping channel watches are still playing this genre, so it's become a kind of area of shame where people are reminded (badly) of the past. Plus the added compression device on the crown looks like something from the steam punk age, and doesn't seem to have any modern relevance. But to sum up, everything is a backlash.

I think the problem with Panerai is that the prices increased dramatically in the past years while the quality did otherwise. The movements got „updates“ which meant no decoration and/or no stop seconds etc. Also, countless limited editions and no logic behind all the model numbers.
While I still love the look of Luminors and give compliments whenever I see one at other wrists, I personally moved on and do not have any PAM left in my collection.

It's definitely the size issue for me. I have a 7" wrist, which I believe is fairly average for a man, and a 40mm is the largest size that looks good on me. I also don't need a crown guard that could double as a cowcatcher on a locomotive. As you mentioned, there are several other brands in that price range that I find more appealing, my Grand Seiko SBGA493 "Katana" being one of them.

They are not necessarily very attractive watches, their signature look makes them even worse, they need to go back to the drawing board, check the size and get rid of that over hanging design by the crown, check the price too, micro-brands are coming in, strongly!

Thank you and really enjoyed your video. It certainly provided some food for thought, particularly around buying used. I actually love the Panerai and that it's a unique, stylish and very identifiable brand.

You either like them or hate them, there's no in-between. I never cared for them.

Not hating. They are ust too boring looking to care.

I have had one for many years and it's my favourite go to watch, more so than my other nice watches!

Until you buy one and the second hand falls off, and then you get scammed by the manufacturer to get it fixed....
