- This lecture is about soil mechanics in which we are solving one numerical example on how to find some basic unknown soil parameters. Numerical problem states that If a soil sample has a dry unit weight of 19.5 kN/m3, moisture content of 8% and a specific gravity of solid particles is 2.67. Find

The unit weight of soil is 17.10 kN/m3. The moisture content of this soil is 22% when the degree of saturation is 58%. Determine the following:

A soil mass in its partially saturated having a water content of 17.5 and a void ratio of 0.87. Determine the degree of saturation, total unit weight and dry unit weight. What is the weight of water required to saturate a mass of 10 meter cube volume. Assume G = 2.69

can you answer ...why the value of porosity is smaller than void ratio?
Because porosity = Vv/Vt but void ratio = Vv / Vs , Vt greater than Vs
So porosity is smaller than void ratio.
A saturated soil specimen has w=36% and Yd= 13.43 kN/m3. Determine:
a. Void ratio
b. Porosity
c. Specific gravity of soil solids
d. Saturated unit weight (kN/m3)
A 1 cubic meter of soil is saturated with water, it has saturated moisture of 20% (all pore spaces is occupied with water). Calculate the total porosity of soil.
