I now live and vlog for my RUclips channel in Mexico. I was thinking about getting a Beatle but it is not good for camping. This tent idea is great and I will have to research it more.
Thank you :-) The tent is made by 'Hannibal', a South African company. It was supplied and fitted by Nene Overland, a Land Rover specialists in the UK.
Thanks Henry, Very happy with my roof tent :-) The roof rack was custom built, along with the jerry can holder nudge bars by a company in the UK called Dreamshack. It was then modified by Nene Overland who fitted the tent and relocated the spare to the rear cage. You can see photos of it's original configuration on my website and facebook pages. www.worldrallies.com and facebook.com/worldrallies
That's Pedro the Baja Bug, the car I drove from the UK to Singapore. There are videos from the journey on my channel and More info on my website www.worldrallies.com
The tent goes for about 1800 dollars, (checked website). With my third world brain allways looking for cheaper similar solutions it does not take too much effort tome to imagine my $30 igloo, at the top of my 75 bug. Just need to install 1/4" panel to the lugage rack, then just a wooden lader and good to go for some $60. Besides without the tent aerodynamycs would e better than with that huge pack allways folded up there.
I have seen that done, on a Porsche! This roof tent (and all of them I think) comes with a memory foam mattress which makes it infinitely more comfortable than sleeping on the ground. A proper roof tent should be way more capable of withstanding bad weather than a D.I.Y version too and way easier to put up and down. I understand the budget thing of course but there are other options, I didn't pay $1800 for my tent. I approached a supplier at a show where he had a display of roof tents on Land Rovers and Jeeps, I convinced him that my car would attract a lot more attention and we did a deal whereby they supplied the tent in exchange for my attending shows with them. I was right, "Pedro" attracts a crazy amount of attention at car shows! Also, they do unbolt, so you don't need to have it on your car all the time.
WELL DONE YOUNG LADY!

At the end of the video when it was driving away, that was it's top speed with the tent.
And you can use the Beetle to heat the tent, Oh wait, the VW doesn't even heat it's self :(
