We have knives with different grinds & edges. A sharp knife is a sharp knife, no matter what angle. As long as it cuts, it's a job well done. Cheers for the tips mate. Warm greetings from Australia.
Totally agree with your sharpening philosophy when it comes to knives. Wood working is different, I’m in a shop. Out in the field when it’s cold and rainy I’ve never seen anyone bring out a $$$$ knife sharpenin jig and go to work and spend an hour sharpening, and if he did I’ll look at him like they were troubled. I have always hand sharpened my knives. The bevel isn’t perfect mirror reflection but it cuts just as good. I have wet ceramic stones and DT diamond stones. Love those diamond stones outside.
That style of knife inspires alot a memories, wonder if the kabar leather stacked military knifes being sporterized like the rifles inspire this style over time.
I love the concept you have on sharpening the knives !! As always a love your show the NH . Great informative video as always Kyle! Take care and stay safe my friend !!
Absolutely beautiful work Kyle… Grandpa would be honored! As always I picked up some new tricks in this video. Thanks for sharing with the maker community!!!
Amen to that on the sharpening. Practise carefully and slowly until you get the feel for it, and then keep practising. There are always people who are going to be more interested in the gear and the process than just using the knife though. Especially with sharpening, where some people get so far into the rabbit hole its nearly a fetish.
What a great build, Kyle. I love watching the process of how you creat such a beautiful end result, starting from raw materials. You are truly gifted in your craft. It struck me that you created an heirloom to use which replaced a family heirloom. You might be asked to create another version that isn't as pretty for the family to actually use every day! Love your work.
Kyle you do great work, this is why I would say you are a Master Craftsman. Also Why I'm being so patient in waiting for my knife and Axe cover. Looking forward to them. Thank you for your vids.
Just a beautiful piece bud!!!❤ I have two that almost look the same. They are well loved and used but if I had money, I would order one of this beauties just to display it on my wall. Keep raising your craft, you are super skilled and your lady too. ❤
Great build! I learned more about stacked handles from you than I did from most. I’ve been baffled why folks haven’t been using a leather adhesive. You gave me a ton of knowledge for a kabar I’m close to building
Looks great. The same German made knife is very common and easy to get for well under $100 on Ebay so I would just buy another of the same knife to use, but there's also the issue of future generations not knowing which knife was which if they were the same knife. I would say this knife you made is definitely more special than just buying a duplicate off Ebay.
Very nice build. I'm curious about the choice of a simple non-stainless steel O1 though. Something like AEB-L will heat treat harder and tougher and doesn't corrode when processing meat and isn't so much more expensive. Needs a kiln instead of a forge for heat treat but all steels benefit from the control of kilns instead of forges.
Erica's Essentials Has a Vid out on the Tradesman. Here on RUclips. Great job ,Kyle on the Heirloom Knife! Merry Christmas to you and your Family. May 2023 be a booming year for you.
Brass just cuts beautiful doesn’t it? Surprised no lubricant though. Things may have changed since I used a machine. Nice job Kyle and thanks for the reminders about sharpening. Happy holidays.and let the girls know Santa is watching!
Great build Kyle. Question for you. I sent you a mail in regards to your axe video. I’m just wondering if you got it? I seem to be having problems with some of my mail. Sure like the look of the traditional leather stack handles of the old knives.
Looks great! I'd love to try making a knife at some point but the heat treatment stage is a bit of a challenge in my living arrangement. I understand that it's absolutely necessary though when making one from stainless steel.
Thanks for watching! The heat treatment stage is definitely an obstacle, and one that hindered me when I lived in an apartment with no real workspace. I'd advise seeking out a heat treat service for that specific job if you get to crafting your own knife. They exist! Email me if you ever have any questions! weiderfan.business@gmail.com
@Thirsty_Fox --- I'm willing to bet that if you made up some blanks, shipped them to Kyle, he would heat treat them PROPERLY and ship them back for finishing. I'm not speaking for Kyle, but chances are ....
@@kyle_noseworthy Thanks, that is a good idea. Are you in the business of heat treating, by chance? It seems like a lot of the services are in the US but in Canada it's harder to find. I'm trying to figure out if I'm able to get everything I'd need before I start buying it all :) Cheers from the capital
Really close replica to the old knife and nicely done. However it´s a pitty you put a couple of the rivets backwards, I would have taken them out and put in new.
"Hobbyist, " quotha. You just showed us the build on what has to be a 5-600 dollar knife. Hardly what I call "hobby" grade building. More like Benchmade or Kentucky.
That 01 tool steel makes an awesome knife blade, or hatchet. My Dad built a set for deer hunting. The hatchet has 1 chip, where it cut through a 16 penny nail. Being the oldest living offspring, it'll get passed down to me.

Yep.
Scalpels are for a surgery.
Field blades just need a keen working edge - no point in getting crazy.
really liked the lathe trick
Beautiful
True Work Of Craftmanship, Kyle. You & Yours Have A Merry Christmas. ATB T God Bless
Beautiful knife. Pro tip. drill the holes with a drill then join them with the endmill. Much faster.
That style of knife inspires alot a memories, wonder if the kabar leather stacked military knifes being sporterized like the rifles inspire this style over time.

Gorgeous knife and sheath! Your quality always impresses. And you reminded me I had something to get on eBay too 😂

Amazing work. Never seen the slotted nut, wrench technique before. Came out stunning
Thank you!
Always beautiful work Kyle!! I have always freehand sharpened my knives as well. Shaptons are some of the best aren’t they?
