Honest Review of Cooks AC 36 Sawmill & How We Fixed the Many Problems!

- This is an honest review of the Cook's AC-36 Sawmill. It's built solid, the Kohler diesel runs strong and hard. After many hours of wondering what we have gotten ourselves into re-engineering the product at time, we are finally getting this machine lined out. We hope we are close to being able to just run it now! It's been challenging @lumberlinefarmingcountry!
I built my own mill using Cooks wheels and saw guilds and it works great. Anyway just put an extension pipe on the oil drain to bring it out in the clear if there is room.
Thank you for watching and the comment. You would think they would have left room for a drain pipe, but that wasn't the case. But we got it! Happy sawing!!!
I admire your practical approach to solving problems that no customer should ever have to, but you do what you need to. Any product, sawmill or otherwise, that is thoughtfully designed & manufactured really stands out & sorry to see that this one obviously isn’t one of those.
I must say that we have walked away several times and thought about giving up but we just keep on keeping on. We hope to have the kinks worked out now. We thank you for watching!!
Thank you for your honest review of our sawmill.
We are happy to hear that you were able to find a used sawmill for sale.
Every operator comes across a learning curve they have to get past on an
unfamiliar machine, and we are glad that you were able to modify it to work even better for you.
We have been in business providing great service making quality products for near 55 years. Our goal is
to always be innovative and continue improving. If we can help you solve any problems even if it is on
a competitors mill we want to do that. We want to help our customers as best we can.
Thanks for the comment but the mill only had 5 hours on it when we purchased.
I’m not talking cooks down when I say this. But woodmizer has the best support I’ve ever seen. Hopefully the mill does you well.
@@americandream_89 hello. No, I understand what you’re saying. Service has gotten better but I had a woodmizer once and it was like you say! Sure appreciate your watching our channel! Thank you
I'm sorry to hear about your issues with the AC36. Mine was the first Perkins Tier 4 Final engine sent out with the computer control for the engine. It has been completely trouble free. Any other minor issues I ran across were completely and quickly addressed by Cook's personnel. My hydraulics have no serious leaks and the support legs do not move. Mine will actually saw down to 3/4", but I only go to 1". I purchased my mill in January 2019 and picked it up in May 2019. I see many WoodMizers on RUclips and online forums and there's not one made that I would trade even for.
Hello. We are very happy you’ve had such a good sawmill. Like we said when it’s up and running you can’t beat it. We have a little over 100 hundred hours now. Today it was really running good and producing good out the lumber but it went down on us. Going to call Cooks. Thank you much for taking time to leave a comment. Take care and happy sawing
HD3238. I had to just my guide wheels "more down pressure" to get it 1 inch off the deck. Locktite the adjusting bolts. They like to loosen up. I also made the same modification on the draw back arms. Look down the blade when it's running, if the blade looks 1/16 thick it's out of adjustment. It should look as thin as a pencil line.
We finally got ours tuned it and it's making good cuts. Also changed brands of blades and have a guy that sharpens and sets the teeth. It's made a big difference. How long have you had yours?
@@LumberLineFarmingCountry I've had my mill 2 yrs. I'm happy with it, after I fine turned it and modify the draw back arms. I have a Timberking sharpener and dual tooth setter. Get my blades sharp and set the way I like them.
@@joekist9606 That's good that it's served you well! We have learned a lot along the way & knock on wood 😀 things are running smooth at this moment. Thank you for watching! Much appreciated
Thanks for the honest review and the clear description of the problems and your solutions. Did Cook's ever make it right? I am looking at an AC36 vs. Woodmizer LT50 Wide.
Hello, No they didn't make it right. If I had a do over, I would have went with the LT50. However, I would advise to stay away from any units built during the 2020- 2023 covid years by any of the saw manufactures. Leave comments if you have any other questions, I'll help in any way I can. Thanks for watching!
Hopefully cook will see this video & fix those issues
We hope so too. They could have a great product if the QC was there. Many hours of reverse engineering later we now have a great machine.
The live swivels leaking must be bad fittings, we use them on a bunch of equipment and don't see failures until 1000's of hours.
These must be junk because they will literally run a solid stream of fluid under any pressure, while idling, constant drip. With less than 100 hours.
Hello, it looks like your jacks are missing the pins. My cooks mill came with pins, there are holes drilled into the jack and square tube. I see the holes in your video. The pins can hold the jack in the up position for transport or down for milling. The other owner may not have given them to you. Section 2 of the manual shows a photo of them….. good luck
We got the pins in it and filmed a video showing them in. Really appreciate it!
Hi again, Check your downward blade adjustment, it should be 1/4” downward pressure. The roller guides push the blade down 1/4”, the blade should not be in the same plane as your band wheels. If your roller guides aren’t in the proper position you won’t be able to cut a 1” board. Good luck
Hello. My husband said he checked the down pressure and it's more than 1/4" and the manual had gotten wet so it's been useless for reference but learning as we go. Thank you again for taking time to help us out!
If Y'All have any input on the HUGE down pressure settings from the factory on my HD3238, it would be greatly appreciated.

That's not ideal. I thought they were better than that. I see they responded in the comments. But did they try to make it right?
It's been an unforgettable journey let's just say that.
