Really informative video Lemi ^-^ the drawing is so adorable :3 I just spent a ton of money on refills so if there was an alternative that would be great xD
I thought I was the only one that absolutely hates Sakura's micron and Copic multiliner brush pens. The felt tip is so floopy and soft (or in Copic's case, entirely too stiff). Controlling line quality/width was pretty much impossible. It tainted my opinion of brush pens for the longest time. That is, until everyone started going on and on about the Pentel pocket brush. I took mine on a plane and go absolutely no change in quality, so that might just be on the package to cover all their bases. I'm glad I stuck with this one. I can see why everyone's been raving about them. This pen's taught me something I've needed to learn for ages: Patience when inking. As far as refills go, I've been to two brick an mortar Blick stores that sell the packs of 2 for 5~ bucks. The local art supply store stocks a package of 6 for around 8 dollars, so I think it's very much worth it to shop around. As usual, great video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
One thing you NEED to watch out for is that if you touch it before it dries, even just a little bit, you will definitely smudge the ink. You have to be really careful with this pen if you like to rest your hand on the paper as you draw because I can guarantee that the ink will immediately smudge. Also, I've heard from others (I haven't used mine enough to know quite yet) that the ink doesn't last very long and runs out quickly. That's probably because it uses so much ink, but you should try to be mindful if you don't want to pay all of that money to buy refills about how you use it and how much you use it! Awesome video!
The similar Kuretake no 13 is compatible with a platinum fountain pen cartridge converter, and if you use that you could use super cheap Noodler's Black. I haven't used the Pentel pocket brush (or any Pentel brush pen), but I know with the Kuretake brush pens (I have a no 8, but as far as I know they all have the same brush) can actually go noticeably finer than a 003 fineliner as the very tip is a single bristle.
Oh yeah! I wish that you can say to us if it´s ok to refill it with other ink, better than buying more cartridges, cause I don´t want to buy more refills T_T but I love this pen so I don´t want to ruin it neither. So yeah, I can´t wait to see the results of your test :D
I just recently purchased this brush pen! So far I LOVE it. I also took it traveling with me and it didn't explode or anything in the airplane! :) I was a little bummed that there was no ink cartridge already inside the pen also... But I guess they do that so the ink cartridge in the pen won't dry out on the shelves. Mine was also very streaky at first and a lot of the strokes had gaps in them. But after using it a few times, that went away! Thank you for the good & honest review, Lemi, as always! :) Your drawing came out really cute!
I love the sketch! It's so cute! You are so good at using brush pens! I'm still practicing, I use the Sakura pigma professional brush pens and I like them I just mess up a lot when using them! Whenever I have a sketch I really like I'm always to afraid to try them and stick with the fine liners. When did you start feeling comfortable using brush pens?
+Benjamin Fleming The problem is that they run out of ink suuuuper fast compared to normal fineliners. So while the price doesn't seem bad, it doesn't exactly last very long either. D:
+Benjamin Fleming I actually found a listing for 12 for $13 :D www.amazon.com/Pentel-Refills-Original-Product-Description/dp/B00OPRKKSG/ref=sr_1_1?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1455082552&sr=1-1&keywords=pentel+brush+pen+refill yeah, they do go super fast but that's what we pay for quality. haha~
Definitely. I bought a Pilot brush pen to test out a higher quality ink brush (It's disposable but $5 so pretty expensive) but i'm addicted. If you use an art syringe I think you could refill the cartridges with Sumi ink or similar.
I refilled the pen with the Dr Ph Martin Black Star Waterproof Hicarb India ink , it's shellac free and is giving me no issues after little over a week. If anything goes wrong I have an extra pen that I bought at Hobby Lobby on clearance when I got the ink. And the ink I bought seems to be fine with copics
I went to micheals with my mom. We went for no in particular reason but they had it there and I just immediately picked it up! Ive never really used brush pens except for the microns and the felt tip is horrific.
OMG The same thing happened to me when I got the Sakura micron fine liners and they came with a brush pen.. I hated it ! And I thought that I will never buy a bursh pen again! But now, thanks to your review, I really want to try a good one it looks really nice! Thank you for doing this review it was very helpful :D!
+Kawther Al Asfoor Yeah... I'm not really sure why those brush pens are that quality when the other liners are awesome. Not to mention the professional brush pen set is sooo much better than that other brush pen. Go figure! 8D
+Kawther Al Asfoor I have had pretty poor luck with any brush pen that has a felt tip (Like the Sakura Pigma Micron ones). The only felt-tip ones I've found that I like are the Faber Castel PITT artist brush pens (not the soft brush, just the regular brush). But the Pentel pocket brush pen is definitely a better option overall, because it actually has bristles! :)
+Awcey Mer Yeah, that is the technique I read about. My only concern is the compatibility with ink brands. So I'd rather try it first and see what happens before I recommend doing that. The pen goes through ink sooo super fast so I'm hoping the syringe refilling will work out. :)
Actually most brush pens and or cheap fountain pens that comes with refills like that have the actual pen empty, I guess it makes sense because as said in the instructions that it can get damaged if put into high levels of pressure and temperature.
+Hannah Knaudt You need to let it dry and set first. Afterward I didn't have a problem with my copics that I used to color. However, I did dab some water on the lines with my finger and tried to rub it up a bit... I would say it's water resistant (not completely water proof) with very minimal smearing.
Hey I also just bought these from amazon for 1220 rupee or about 19 dollars, regarding the refills they sure are very expensive about 23 dollars but on the aliexpress store the pack of four is available for about 500 rupee or about 7-8 dollars so that's much more cheap and convenient than amazon
I think they packaged the ink differently in order for it to be good for longer. So if they would have put it in the pen it could maybe leak or dry out quicker, this way the ink stays best because its sealed better. Though that's just my own speculation.
+Ashpyxiating That makes sense. I guess I assumed there was a third cartridge inside of the pen that hadn't been "popped" into the pen just yet. I wish the packaging was a little clearer about that because I figured it was a super good deal when it was just an alright deal. Haha
+Ashpyxiating I think so too. At first I felt sort of deceived. But I can see why they did it, especially if it means the ink won't dry out just sitting on the shelves!
If you wanna fill the cartridge, you gotta get a syringe with a needle that fits the cartridge, and an ink that works well. I'd suggest picking up a cheap cartridge from Amazon, and for the ink, use any rotring ink, I use the Parker quink, but the sailor and the pH Martin's black star is good too. Don't use India inks or over pigmented inks as they may clog your brush
It seems like a really good brush. You might be able to do an eyedropper conversion to it, it will definitely saves you a lot of money and the pen will have a greater ink capacity than the cartridges.
+disgustelicous You'd have to use a syringe and manually fill the cartridges that come with the pen. Only real issue is finding compatible brand inks that'll give the same result.
+LemiaCrescent Sorry, I think I'm confusing you. What I meant was that you'll be filling the barrel of the pen itself and not even bother with the cartridges. You'll need some silicon grease for the threads to stop from leaking and some o-rings as well. As for inks, you might like to check out Gouletpens.com for a wide range of brands, they also sell ink samples.
I'm not sure I'm that daring to try to totally rearrange how the pen works. You sound so knowledgeable about it, maybe you should upload a video! I'm sure I'd mess it up. x3
+LemiaCrescent Maybe you'd like to try it in the future. The conversion is quite common in the fountain pen community, the fountain pen and the brush pen are quite similar, with the nibs their only difference. In the future though, it would be really cool to see you incorporate the use of fountain pens in your art making :D
@@LemiaCrescent Any rottering ink should work with it, I use the Parker quink, however sailor and pH Martin's black star ink works nicely, but do not use India ink and inks that may have too much pigment or they may clog your brush
It's actually around 10-14 USD depending where you buy it from. and comes with 1 refill. I'm guessing it also depends if you're from the US or not since prices vary.
Prices vary depending where you live for art products in general. You can google it and find a price very easily for anything you want to buy. If you're from the states then it's around 10-14 dollars including one refill.
The refills dont seem too expensive to me. You can get a 6 pack of them for about eight dollars, and you can get an even better deal if you buy 12 for thirteen dollars. You can get 12 refills for roughly the price of the actual pen, which seems pretty ok to me. Then again, you can buy whole jars of ink for 5 bucks, so if that works, it would be even cheaper.
im sure other people are saying this but you are pronouncing sakura wrong, and honestly it is tilting me haha. it is pronounced like sa-koo-ra. thank you haha.

Jenna Drawing u can inject ink with a syringe..
This was an incredible video! The drawing was absolutely adorable and your comments were very helpful! 💕
Aw! This drawing is so cute! I love your drawings ♥
Great review! This was one of the best vids when i searched for it. If you go a little bid more professional you own the market!

You're pretty good with that thing. I've been practicing for a few months now and there's no way I could a .1 line yet.
Nice review! Probably going to pick one of these up sometime soon

Each cartridge carries 1ML of ink. If you get a syringe and a bottle of ink you can save tons of money 💰!

Great review! I have this brush pen too. I'm a rebel though since I refill the spent ink cartridge with India ink and a eyedropper.
This was a really great review. I really trust pentel for art supplies, I own a few other products by them including a different brush pen.
I feel like I'd squash the brush tip with my gorilla death grip o_O
Does it behave well under acrylic paint?
I went to micheals with my mom. We went for no in particular reason but they had it there and I just immediately picked it up! Ive never really used brush pens except for the microns and the felt tip is horrific.
Have you ever used the mangaka flexible f brush pen? If so, which do you prefer?

hi! i am just beginning and i was wondering if you could do a tutorial on drawing both people and animals in general??
I've heard some people say they refill the cartridges with a syringe. Tbh I think this pen is my fave brush pen.

+LemiaCrescent Do you scan your final images or do you photograph them, and what model do you use?
I love your channel!
for drawing mangas, are microns or fineliners than brushes?
in my country, refills are 4 for 3 dollars
Nice
Does the nib bunch up if you use it a lot? I have the micron brush pen, and the end has bunched up in the few weeks I've used it.
+Lyrical Gecko since it's not felt-tipped like the micron brush pen is, the pentel brush pen won't bunch up if you use it a lot! :^)
+Lyrical Gecko the tip is made of bristles like a paintbrush, so no, they're completely different. :)
Alright. Thank you both! (^-^)
Does this pen smear when you go over it with copics or watercolour?
+Hannah Knaudt You just have to let it dry for a while and then you're all set!
nope! i have one and as far as i can tell from using it, the ink is water and alcohol proof
+Hannah Knaudt You need to let it dry and set first. Afterward I didn't have a problem with my copics that I used to color. On amazon the refills are 6 refills for like $7
Maybe try refilling the cartridge with a syringe rather than filling the pen itself. Looks good, apart from the refill cost.
Amazon sells the refills cheap. I own the pocket brush pen and bought a pack of 6 refills
I just found this pen at Hobby Lobby and bought it. Btw, any luck manually refilling the pen Lemi?

cool
you can use a syringe to refill it with ink
+Shy Dragoness Yes you can but you have to find an ink brand compatible with it. Which was what I was going to experiment with. x3
That's what I'll be doing when my first two refills run out. It works great with my bros pen, so I'm gonna do this too
@@LemiaCrescent Any rottering ink should work with it, I use the Parker quink, however sailor and pH Martin's black star ink works nicely, but do not use India ink and inks that may have too much pigment or they may clog your brush
Hi I'm kind of a new artist I'm kind of on a budget so I was wondering how much that Pentel brush pen costs thank you
i believe this brush pen is around $30? if youre on a budget, you should try out some brush pens from Daiso instead

Did you ever do a video on what camera, mic, and lights you use?
You're not dumb. I felt tricked as well
also the ink runs out pretty fast I'm on my second refill and I just got it a month ago
why don't you draw ihascupquake it would be sooooo awesome plz reply
in amazon its 12 cartridges for 10 dollars.
edit: I just found a pack of 6 for 10 dollars too this doesn't make sense
Little tip
If you're doing something ruffled like a scarf. Try to shake your hand to make it look ruffled
