    --
    To rid the oceans of plastic, we need to not only clean up what is already out there but also stop new plastic from entering the ocean: we need to close the tap.
    Rivers are the main source of ocean plastic pollution. They are the arteries that carry waste from land to the ocean. Our research found that 1000 rivers are responsible for roughly 80% of the pollution.
    Working together with government leaders and private corporations, our goal is to tackle these 1000 most polluting rivers, all over the world, by 2025. How? By deploying Interceptors.
    The Interceptor is The Ocean Cleanup’s answer for river plastic waste. It is the first scalable solution to prevent plastic from entering the world’s oceans from rivers.

      Just for it to end up in the bin again after you are too old for the toy? Or you don’t want it on your shelf anymore?? You may aswell leave the plastic in the ocean if you are going to create something that will ultimately just be thrown in the bin after a while. What needs to be made is technology for the new world, it needs to be formulated into something that can be used for generations and the only time you will have to dispose of it will be once the item brakes from overuse..

    Developed countries are struggling to recycle plastics and in some cases they just sell it to developing countries to get rid of it. How on earth is TOC going to do something that entire nations cant?

    • @jesperchristoffersen8413
      @jesperchristoffersen8413 4 года назад +6

      By their will to do something about it (unlike most political 'leaders'). Without will, even entire nations become very small capacities.
      Edit: For instance, my friend and I alone cleaned almost our entire hometown (6,500 thousand inhabitants). What they could not do with 3,000 times the manpower, we did in a few months.

      @@jesperchristoffersen8413 we're talking about sorting every particle of plastic that is in the ocean and creating new product with it.. it's not like they can just mix it all up it doesnt work like that. I mean some people do that but it just makes a very brittle material that has little use. I'm with you though.. but it will take them hundreds of years to clean it all up if they dont take short cuts like burning it or burying it.

    • @jesperchristoffersen8413
      @jesperchristoffersen8413 4 года назад +2

      @@project-pe6ly Yeah, I myself would rather burn it (ideally for energy) than having it build up in our food chain, killing marine animals etc. What pisses me off the most is that we in the Western World does absolutely nothing to fund large facilities to do so in Indonesia, The Philippines and India for a start. India being a "great" economy, for instance, forgets all about per capita. Long-term it will only become more expensive to handle if we neglect. But that's politicians.. 🤷‍♂️🙄 Cheers! 🌍✌

    From the shots you have shown us it seems almost as if the interceptor is in the middle of the city.
    Doesn't that mean that "behind" the interceptor, closer to the sea, plastic can still be thrown into the river and get into the oceans?
    My concern, point or question is that you may have to put the interceptor or another barrier right next to the ocean to hinder plastic from entering it? Otherwise the preventing function only partly succeeds as stuff thrown in closer to the ocean in other cities, or areas, that are located "behind" the interceptor still enters the rivers and therefore the oceans. Have you thought about that and geographically measured where to put the interceptor best, possibly close to the sea?
    I hope you understand what I mean. I think you're bright enough to think of this. I was just wondering. Keep up the great work! :)

    • @theoceancleanup
      @theoceancleanup  4 года назад +3

      Good question! The actual placement in the river is on a case-by-case basis, based on flow-velocity, the width of the river, presence of a plastic “hotline” or not, traffic, proximity to a delta, etc. In some rivers, it will be necessary to install more than one barrier to capture as much of the debris as possible while still allowing wildlife and boat traffic to move freely.

      As we aim to help tackle the 1000 most polluting rivers by 2025, we cannot personally manage the local waste handling - which remains in the hands of the local operators of the Interceptors and waste management partners. In some locations, there are currently no better solutions than to bring it to a landfill. However, we minimally require a sanitized landfill before we commit to deploying an Interceptor at any given location.

      Not only! The Interceptor is made of marine quality steel, stainless steel and aluminum, and is equipped with an off-grid power generator, remote monitoring dashboard, automated extraction control, 4G data uplink, and more. The waste collection capacity is 50 cubic meters.
      Interceptors in our pilot program were approximately 700 thousand euros for construction and assembly. However, we expect that once we are in series production, the costs will be lower making them more cost efficient in the future. Learn more here: www.theoceancleanup.com/rivers.

    The forests 🌳🌳🌳the trees 🌲🌲🌲 all over the world even if you cut down more and replant them it would take years for all these small trees to become bigger , don’t get me wrong it’s may of been a good idea once Upon a time but the logging industry is cutting way to much you end up releasing massive amounts of carbon that takes far to long for the trees that are small and growing to remove the carbon footprint. What needs to happen older ground that was once forests and woodlands need replanting at an alarming rate governments and leaders of this planet are thinking more about there pockets than the environments the wildlife of this planet there creating an illusion that people think this will solve both sides and what it does it solves more towards the logging side than it does the planting side I would rather use plastic for permanent house hold stuff like tables chairs etc than wood than take the lungs away from are planet .
    Trees are a massive importance to the way we live and humans are abusing this with constant illusions and false promises.
    When you walk into a shop or a chemist and it says 99 percent etc it means 99 is better than 40 percent and that is why the 1 percent gives the businesses Leave way for a win case in a court room every time and the trouble is people believe to much rubbish by politicians and businesses the art of selling is bullish..ting .
