Billie is really good at describing heartbreak and love in her songs. I think that is why everyone who listens to her music for the first time gets chills off rip. Sometimes so before she even utters a word. I think that is what’s beautiful about her working with her producer brother Finneas. They set up an atmosphere for the listener through their music. Lyrically, the journey through this song is her coming to the realization that the role she is playing is not healthy for her. I think she tells the story from a friends with benefits stand point. Giving every excuse on why a relationship between them will never work because that is what her lover planted in her head from the very first line in the first verse. I don’t know if it’s her trying to protect herself from hurt, because based on the lyrics it would seem like she is always put in a position as the “friend” but never the actual girlfriend. So she doesn’t trust her love interest to be more than that anyways. As for the video I think she feels tortured. Maybe she hasn’t spoken this out loud to her lover. Maybe the drink is her swallowing her real feelings about the position she finds herself in and it it literally killing her from the inside out. She may be in love with buddy but knows if she spills her feelings to him, that would be the literal end of any relationship they may have at the moment. And that is a risk she might be willing to take. Sorry for ranting. Great reaction by the way. And love both of your points of view.❤️

okay wow.. this is the situation i was in just recently so this really hit me. i didnt want to say how i feel so i dont lose him but eventually he ended it. im still in love but the situation got really messed up and im pretty sure he doesnt want to see me anymore. im hoping that will change because its really painful.

And you got it perfectly guys, both of you, it could be interpreted as a toxic relationship and darkness overtaking Billie. I have some opinions taken from other people and from what I had interpreted myself. She’s wearing all white so that could represent innocence or purity, then the way she hesitates before grabbing the glass but ends up drinking it anyway, like she knows drinking from it is not good but still does it regardless of her doubt. Then the darkness/harmful relationship gets to be too much and starts overflowing, tainting her little by little and although she tries to clean it it only ends up a bigger mess. Until finally she can’t take it anymore and basically “explodes”.
Pretty dark concept for such a calm sounding song, her voice is beautiful tho.

I promise you will not be disappointed. Billie and NF are the two realest artists and are incredibly talented.Most people write Billie off as another pop artist but she is her own type of music. She is one of a kind and is truly an amazing singer and makes you feel every emotion. Its very rare these days for an artist to get me excited about music and her and NF are the first 2 in a long time who have. You should react to Bury a friend or You should see me in a Crown. How many times do we think about going back, or actually go back to something toxic. How many times do we in a sense 'drink the koolaid' to believe it will be different this time, only to bleed the pain again and again. This song makes me cry everytime. I was in an abusive relationship and this reminds me of how fucked up I was back then. How many times did I poison myself to go back.

Oh gosh you found a gem again. I love her. She got a real soft voice but so beautiful and she thinks her singing sucks dang. She got strong fans because she is an original. She writes powerful stuff and it resonates. I got into her after I heard ppl raving and that she was only 16. Now she 18 and won lots of awards and she continues to make hits. Some of her stuff is mental health. I love a few of her songs. She so pretty and nice person. Her vids are unique too. Loved your faces at the end there, haha. -baby ARMY NY USA 💜

They might switch at a different verse or different refrain, but never kid sentence like her. Plus, her brother plays the instruments and helps her write songs. They are extremely talented.
She is dark like a siren. Thats why her music is so hypnotizing. Chains symbolism in bondage to darkness. She even drinks the darkness and it destroys her purity as in the white. So much symbolism in her music but no one wants to see it for what it is.

The darkness is the poison(of the relationship) going in it's pure and eventually it becomes toxic on both sides. So she leaves it and that all the poison leaving her system. Her knowing it's bad. " Because nothing is better sometimes once we have said our goodbyes". "Let me let you go"
This is about a relationship where it was abusive on both sides mentally and she didn’t realize she was doing it to the other person while they were doing it to her and once she realized that it was her seeing that toxic relationship from their perspective
Basically there’s many theories but I think she drinks so called “poison” (reason unknown) and she starts to worsen in health until at the end she “dies” there are so many things it could symbolize tho

To me this song is too relateable, it hits different. I felt so insanely sad listening to this, but repeated over and over to get a better grasp what exactly she sings about and why it causes such strong emotional reaction for me. To me its like toxicity in relationships that are not intentional. You love each other but can´t make it work, no reflection, no conversation, no nothing. Its so sad. Behaviours in relationships can form out of trauma, depression f.e. and parts of them you are just not able to change (at least thats true for me). Gettinga grasp of this toxicity and wanting to leave, but the toxicity already having consumed you (pouring out all over in the end).
I think it's Symbolic to how depreesion can effect you and Mental Health in general
