to your average non listener, I suppose. but anyone who's anybody in the finger style world, is very well acquainted with keaggy and his stylistic prowess of his Olsons over the years. and if you weren't, well ''stick out your hand'' as the teacher or principal ,used to say in school in the 60's
Phil lives close by. I had the opportunity to hear him play to a small group at a local Music shop. Seeing his ability close up was a treat. Nice guy. His Olson guitar cost more than my first home. Thank you for respecting his Christian faith.
I have seen, and talked to Phil many times. He is truly a humble man and a dear brother in The Lord. Last time in was in Jax, FL, I took my Les Paul to the concert in Murray Hill. He played, Happy-of which I sang the intro-then he signed my guitar. What I love about Phil is he plays every note and he loves The Lord through his music.
To see him just go into one of his jams was a gift. One time in Atlanta he did one of his solos for about a hour straight. Better than the roller coaster at Six Flags 😂
Philip Side is my All time favorite of his. A beautiful mix of his offerings. Who will speak up for the Little Ones was way before anyone else was speaking up for Life.
I've met and seen Phil Keaggy play over the last forty years a number of times. The most honorable and honoring Christian irrespective of his over-the-top amazing gift and talent. A humble man of phenomenal gifting!
El mejor guitarrista que he escuchado, y para la gloria De Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, cuando el amor y la pasión se juntan con el Espíritu Santo no hay nada que el mundo se pueda comparar.
I had the honour & pleasure of spending an hour 1on1 with Phil in NZ, in the late 1970s, talking guitar & subsequently leading to giving up a “hobnailed boot 12string” for an Ibanez 6string acoustic. A real man of God, and a brother..
If my eyes were closed, and you didn't mention his name, I would immediately know that it was Phil Keaggy! He has a sound that is all his. He is fantastic!
Yes, he does. Yet, he will be the first to tell you he was always like a sponge, soaking many many different musician’s styles. In a sense, that’s basically what most honest musicians do, picking up certain things from others.
Thanks so much for featuring Phil Keaggy. I've been a fan since the early 70"s. I've always appreciated his gift of melody. He's also a great lyricist and singer.
My favorite way to see Phil live is when it's just he, an acoustic guitar, and his JamMan. He does a lot of layering and becomes a one man band. I don't know if you're looking to feature him again, but here's a clip like I described. He does some nice intro stuff, but the song really takes off at about the 2:10 mark. ruclips.net/video/3wpn6LVxX0s/видео.html
Fil,I saw Phil Keaggy twenty years ago in a church with my brother and we're both musicians but after seeing Phil Keaggy live the man is so gifted that I felt like burning my guitar and my brother did as well,I wasn't jealous of him or anything because Phil's so far above the norm that he's on a completely different level,it's not a competition anyways,Phil Keaggy is a man truly gifted and blessed by God. Bob.
I put this man in the same category as Tommy Emmanuel. I didn't know he was missing the second finger on his picking hand. Great coordination. Great video Fil. Thank you.
@@Seegster77 he most certainly didn't let that stop him from being a gifted guitar virtuosity. Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath is missing 2 finger tips on his right hand in a foundry accident.
I’ve seen him play many times growing up in Youngstown Ohio. He is truly an amazing guitarist and an amazing human being. Thanks for giving him his due.
I've heard this artist's name for years, but never really got around paying attention to his playing. Dang! He makes it look so easy! Thanks for highlighting him here, Fil.
Truely one of the all time GREATEST GUITAR MASTERS ! Had the privilage of playin percussion behind this master many years ago ! Extreme experience! Nice Job Phil !
I was lucky enough to see him at a show in like the mid 90s he was incredible! Even got to meet him afterwards, nicest guy ever. I’m a atheist and I have about a 200 song Keaggy Spotify playlist that we listen to all the time. It’s mostly his acoustic instrumental stuff. 1991s “Beyond Nature” is my favorite album from him, it’s so brilliant and peaceful, I’ve been sleeping to it for years! 👍🏻
Thank you for your kind and respectful words about Phil. Also, I really appreciate the heads up on the “beyond nature“ album as I somehow missed that one and will now look it up. BTW: I to have found that religion seems to bring up more questions than answers. I am a hyper analytical person - the most analytical person I have ever met actually. That can come in handy, of course, but it can also present some con founding challenges. One thing that becomes increasingly clear to me though is that there is a spiritual unseen realm Dash a reality in dimensions beyond our mortal three dimensional reality. I have become convinced but there really is such a thing as a very dark, evil, malevolent room as well as a kingdom with all the opposite attributes. Irrespective of the many unanswered questions, I’ve concluded that , Of all the religions, the Judeo Christian story or narrative explains most closely the force is that I have come to believe are real. As I write this on October 30 of 2021, Eric Metaxas is releasing a new book called “is atheism dead?“ If you or anyone else reading this comment wants some very intelligent and reasonable observations and commentary on this whole topic, I strongly recommend that you get a copy of this outstanding book. While Eric unabashedly comes from a Christian worldview, I find his treatise fair and very well thought out. Perhaps the thing that most readers will appreciate most is the extensive outside knowledge that he has researched and compiled in this book from various leading experts and authorities.
He sings with the guitar. Phil is definitely gifted. Technically amazing stuff that the average person who doesn’t know anything about music can enjoy. Thank you Fil for pointing out the negative impact of drugs. I got high one time when I was 16 and that taught me a lesson. Never touched it afterwards. Life and music is so much better clean. Thank you Fil. God bless you.
the great thing about seeing Phil live, is about half of it is improvised. On his Philly Live DVD, in the commentary, he mentions that the opening song was just something he was playing around with backstage as they were introducing him! He is so good at improvising that his sound guy started recording his sound checks because he would have many magical moments. His CD , "Roundabout" is all recorded soundchecks. On his album, "On The Fly" which is played entirely on a Parker Fly, he has one jam that is over 30 minutes long, totally improvised. He said he was in the zone and would have gone longer, but he looked over at the reel to reel and saw it was running out out of tape. He also has a song on "Acoustic Sketches" called "The Marionette" , it was an improvisation he did as someone read a poem called The Marionette. He did a second take, but ended up using the first one
Let's not miss the main point. He is not just an underrated guitarist, but the reason he is underrated must be the emphasis. He is underrated because he is a born-again Christian
This seems to be true for many great Christian artists. Partially because some people are turned off by Christianity and partially because lack of being in the mainstream due to being in the Christian music world.
I think he has 10 fingers on that left hand, not sure, they're moving so fast! Cant even believe he's picking and strumming like that with a missing finger!! That was absolutely beautiful..thanks! Analysis very informative as usual.
Thank You so very much!!!! Phil is my absolute favorite guitarist!! Such a humble genius with a body of work matched by very few contemporaries. To this day he is still making jaw dropping music.
Always loved his alternative tuning compositions. First saw him in the 70's live. Saw him again a few years ago and really got into his looper on-the-fly creations. It was memorizing! Huge talent.
I've seen Phil Keaggy a few times by himself and a few times with Glass Harp, has he's from my neck of the woods in Ohio... Excellent Excellent guitar player and just so tasteful live !
good call on this one fil. I've never heard of this guy, absolutely mesmerizing. your spot on saying his playing is cinematic, I immediately felt like this was from a movie sound track. good pick.
Thank you for including Phil in your repertoire. He is well known in some circles and totally unknown in others and yet, he is such a beautiful artist. I was buying his albums as a teenager in the late 70s, early 80s. I've loved his work for a long time.
Fil breaking down Phil's guitar skills..awesome!! and I want to thank you Fil for showcasing alot of guitarists that may not be as mainstream or they may be underrated...your channel has such diversity and the way you break down videos is fair and honest..I can't get enough of your channel...awesome job bro!
I've seen Phil over a dozen times live in all kinds of venues and settings. I saw him play in front of 10,000 people and a group of 6 fellow players at a guitar summit. He was the same player and person each time. A genuine soul and one of the finest players ever. I saw him walk into a room at 11:30 in the evening after a full day of teaching and playing at his guitar summit. The group was a mix of new and very experienced players but Phil had the ability to encourage and instruct each one at their level. I actually got to play with him for about an hour that night and having been a new player at the age of 42 his encouragement put my playing on another level. The best advice he gave was don't be afraid to mess up. He encouraged us to stretch ourselves and with that we would experience failure. But that was ok just part of the process. Hard to believe but he is a finer human being than a player and his playing speaks for itself. Thanks phil...
Phil, I have a message from Phil Keaggy for you. I have known Phil for over 40 years now and I am doing a story on the 50th Anniversary of his "What A Day" album. The first record he did after leaving Glass Harp. In researching for my story I came across your video here and sent Phil the link... this is how he replied... "I wish I could meet this Phil…. He’s so intelligent and gifted at what he does!" Then he wrote to me... "I bet you could make a connection and if you do please tell him I like his videos!" So there you go - well done. I have booked Phil at least 15 times over the years to play at concerts or conferences for us and I published Christian Musician magazine for over 20 years. Phil was on the very first cover of my magazine and many times after that over the years. He played my wedding even... as my bride was coming down the aisle Phil was playing the 'Wedding March" on his acoustic guitar through his JamMan. I thought to myself, "Lord, does it get any better than this?" Anyway, thanks for what you do. I learn a lot from your videos. Bruce
I saw Phil play in the mid 70's, also he was my first magazine cover back in 1982. He played at the wedding of Linda Eastman's sister, with Linda and her husband Paul McCartney participating. I also have a photo of Phil and Paul sitting together and both playing acoustic guitars, one of which was a left handed model that Phil had made especially for Paul.
Fil, as always, an enjoyable and insightful analysis. In my opinion, Phil Keaggy is the best living guitarist and I do not say that lightly. His technical prowess is only exceeded by his sense of melody, harmony, and rhythm. As you correctly stated, his legato is face melting but I would point out his contrapuntal movement in multiple rhythmic centers. Phil is the master of the instrument. Well done, sir!
Also "The wind in the wheat" is quite ethereal. I also love his work on "How the West was One". "Time" is one of my favourite rock songs of all time and his live solo on that is phenomenal. I saw him live in the UK in the 90s. Great guitarist.
Hey man. Thank you so much for reviewing my personal favorite guitar player. I've seen him 3 times in the past 4 years and each time he gets better. I really recommend reviewing on a RUclips vid, his old band The Glass Harp. They are absolutely incredible! If you think solo Phil is good, the three of them together will blow your mind. God Bless you man and have a great day.
Phil told me that he never took a guitar lesson, but learned to play guitar on his own, practicing almost incessantly as a young man, listening to many different music genres.
I've sat about 10 feet from Mr. Keaggy and watched him play a set using his looper. The man is incredibly talented and such a humble, amazing musician!
First concert I ever attended, not sure what the year was but late 60's or early 70's. Glass Harp played a local High School. Watching Phil shred was awesome.
I've seen Phil live 3-4 times from around 1982 to 2018 and he is phenomenal! Added to everything else said about him is that he has a great voice as well! A great player, songwriter, vocalist, who plays several instruments. I love your critic's Phill great job!!!
great analyses of Phil's playing, he is a very humble man,who love's people , and family , i talked with him for 40 min , before concert , he has a lot of heart . God bless !!!!!!
Beautiful playing! I love acoustic guitar. I admire anyone that can play acoustic guitar well or exceptionally well, because I could never get close to the level I would have liked to have been ☹️ great video 👍 😎🤘
We live on the same planet and at the same time as Phil Keaggy does. Man. That's freakin' awesome and as a guitarist, all the proximity to perfection I need to be inspired.
Such Phenomenal guitar mastery! A beautiful piece of music played so fluidly and flawlessly! an absolute pleasure to listen to this amazing man! Great analysis Fil! Cheers Mario!😀🤘🤘
How awesome is this:Fil you've done two Phil Keaggy videos! Thank you for analysis of many different artists of many different genres!!!! Sincerely,BobbyK
Phil has been one of my favorites for decades. I followed him as a teen. I saw him play once in Scotland in the mid-80s and a couple of more times on the east coast in the States. An absolute maestro on guitars, both electric and acoustic.
Another great video. Phil Keaggy dismissed the “Hendrix” quote. I think you really do a great job analyzing these great artists. I learn a lot from your videos.
After 4 years lots of thanks for this "old" vid where Phil Keaggy`s playing "Castle Call/ Pilgrim´s Flight", such awesome and beautiful guitar music, ´can imagine this was played on string instruments in Great Britain/ Ireland some centurys ago! Thank you very much Fil for analysing! Greetings from Germany.
Met him in late 60's heard, saw his band Glass Harp many times alone 3 sets, as well as openers from many big name bands, artists. Also have every thing he has ever released on LP, Cassettes, CD's & Videos. Alone, acoustic, electric, christian stuff with many different people he never fails been blessed to have gotten to hear, see & meet him in my life, one of the best guitarists ever, musician, human!! 60+ years!!
I have met and I have had the honor of playing with Phil. What an awesome human being and musician. I played with him and Lincoln Brewster on a third stage at a 3 day christian concert. the guy is so humble and full of smiles and so willing to give advice both on guitar and life with a gentle smile and love. The man will always hold a special place in my heart even though I know he won't remember me.
So glad to here you critique this amazing video. Phil flatly denies the rumor concerning Jimi Hendrix. I had the chance to see him in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After the concert I looked for him to get his autograph. Only to find him giving free guitar lessons to a large group of small children. What a privilege that was to watch. That alone was worth the price of admission!!!!
LOVE Phil Keaggy!! Sooooo freakin' glad to see him here! There is a song "Tell Me How You Feel" from the Sunday's Child album that is awesome and quite wonderfully Paul McCartney-esque! Fil, Thank you much for this...so appreciated :)
Been watching your content for a little while, Phil. Love your maturity and general respect for the content you review. Keep it up and don't deviate from the consistent path you have built. Just a thank you from a fan.
I saw him back in 1975 and then probably another dozen times through the early 2000's. Amazing player. His improvs in the mid 70's thru the early 80's were rivaled by very few. Interesting that his very best studio solos were never done on his own work. "He'll do the Same" and "Which One are You" by Paul Clark feature Phil as the lead guitarist. Take a listen - you'll be blown away and wonder how he was not mentioned in the same breath as any of the very best in the rock genre. Trust me; check it out.
Phil is a Christian. Had he hone out in the world at 20 years old or so he would have set the world on fire. However, he chose to do Christian music. His song Who Will Speak Up for the Children is so powerful. Way ahead of his time given the subject matter. Awesome performance. Majorly responsible for my acceptance of Christ.
A great summary of a great player. Hearing guys like him, and others in that quality class, makes one feel vastly inferior and question why in the world one continues to play. At the end of the day it has to be the love of music that is the key to it all
I have heard of him for the first time today and his playing is so beautiful, full of such feeling it's totally moved me to almost tears. He is amazing truly. A bit like Django.
Hello guys I was lucky enough to book Phil for a concert in Switzerland in 1993. Since he arrived one day earlier than planned, we organized a barbecue together at our house. After the meal, he suddenly asked if anyone had a guitar with them. A friend of mine, got his Takamine at home and Phil started with a 30 minute private concert. Shortly before, music by George Benson was playing over the stereo. Phil listened to it briefly and played the Mt. Airy Road piece on the Takamine. It was absolutely overwhelming. Combine that with the fact that Phil, according to him, can't read music. The whole evening was characterized by a man who knows how to touch people's hearts with his sensitive and humble manner. I will never forget this evening and of course the concert the night after. Kind regards from Switzerland
Phil Keaggy! One of the most under-rated guitarists ever.

I thought to myself, "Lord, does it get any better than this?" Anyway, thanks for what you do. I learn a lot from your videos. Bruce
Thanks Bruce for relaying the message, that's great and I appreciated it!
Would love to see that photo
Yes, and I have read that he considers Paul a big influence ❤
phil keaggy is a really an underrated legend
Fil, as always, an enjoyable and insightful analysis.
In my opinion, Phil Keaggy is the best living guitarist and I do not say that lightly. His technical prowess is only exceeded by his sense of melody, harmony, and rhythm. As you correctly stated, his legato is face melting but I would point out his contrapuntal movement in multiple rhythmic centers. Phil is the master of the instrument.
Well done, sir!
My goodness I shed tears on this song. You could feel the presence of the Lord!
Great response! Thanks Fil For reacting to Phil! You're both great!
It should be illegal for somebody to be that talented! I consider him personally the ultimate guitarist!
Stunningly beautiful! what a great guitarist, and singer!
Also "The wind in the wheat" is quite ethereal. I also love his work on "How the West was One". "Time" is one of my favourite rock songs of all time and his live solo on that is phenomenal. I saw him live in the UK in the 90s. Great guitarist.
Love how the west was won double live album
Beautiful guitar from Phil, he's a genius.
I was privileged to see Phil live twice! It was himself/solo with looping... he was awesome!
This track still blows my mind! The album too is incredible and inspiring. Thanks for this!
Can you tell me the Album it's on? Thanks!
Phil Keaggy!!! Woo-hoo!! And a phenomenal electric guitarist, as well!
It is so nice to see a video about Phil and his playing. Thank you for doing this.
Phil told me that he never took a guitar lesson, but learned to play guitar on his own, practicing almost incessantly as a young man, listening to many different music genres.
I've sat about 10 feet from Mr. Keaggy and watched him play a set using his looper. The man is incredibly talented and such a humble, amazing musician!
good to listen to some quieter acoustic brilliance. thanks for posting Fil.. not seen this.
A true pro! Beautiful composition!
Rock on!
Another amazing player I am totally unaware of. This is stunning, classical folky...a lot going on! Loved it.
A very underrated guitar legend.
That was amazing.
Phil is a Christian musician with lots of great music
Thank you for highlighting such a great an (in some circles) underrated guitarist. I grew up listening to his music (first on vinyl!).
Well done Fil for recognizing a great guitarist!
That is fantastic!
Very nice and smooth. I knew he did Christian music so I didn't check him out. I will now. Great video. Thanks, Fil.
I have seen Phil 4 times over the last few decades. Tremendous player with an amazing sense of melody.
great analyses of Phil's playing, he is a very humble man,who love's people , and family , i talked with him for 40 min , before concert , he has a lot of heart .
Wow, that was soooo beautiful; absolutely one of the good things in life is music like this 🙂.
Nice electronic drum set :) I briefly worked a show as a stagehand for this Phil, he's a really really nice guy. Incredible musician.
Phil has been one of my favorites for decades. I followed him as a teen. I saw him play once in Scotland in the mid-80s and a couple of more times on the east coast in the States. An absolute maestro on guitars, both electric and acoustic.
Thank you for covering Phil. You really honored him.
Hello Fil. Mitch here and this guy has got fluid on that fret board. One of those players.... Thanks Fil
🤘 ROCK
What a way to spend a Saturday nigh listening to Phil Keaggy's melodic guitar playing and your analysis and break down thanks Fil.
Keaggy is wonderful! I’ve seen him a couple of times over the years, first as a kid back in the 70s. ✌️
Me too...but 80s and 90s. Great musician.
60+ years!!
Hi Fil. Thank you so much for another excellent insightful video.
Cool!
Cool!
I saw Phil at a local church where I live, and I was never the same after. I felt like burning my acoustic guitar after.
Brannon Evans same.
Did you see him at tower hill? The night he honored Jerry Gaskill?
LOVE Phil Keaggy!!
Sooooo freakin' glad to see him here!
There is a song "Tell Me How You Feel" from
the Sunday's Child album that is awesome
and quite wonderfully Paul McCartney-esque!
Fil, Thank you much for this...so appreciated :)
Been watching your content for a little while, Phil. Love your maturity and general respect for the content you review. Keep it up and don't deviate from the consistent path you have built. Just a thank you from a fan.
Thanks for the kind words!
I had that on VHS back in the day. Great breakdown as usual Fil.
Cool!
Wow, that was beautiful, hadn’t heard of this gent 👍🏻
Reaction and review...perfect. I love Phil Keaggy's acoustic releases.
Thanks for doing these 👍🏻🎼
Amazing sound he has. Acoustic master.
Praise God🎉❤!!!
I agree. “Who Will Speak Up for the Little Ones” is one of my favorites.
Little Ones
Phil Keaggy is a gifted guitarist,He is inspiration 🎹🎸💕
A great summary of a great player. Hearing guys like him, and others in that quality class, makes one feel vastly inferior and question why in the world one continues to play. At the end of the day it has to be the love of music that is the key to it all
He is simply one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
I have heard of him for the first time today and his playing is so beautiful, full of such feeling it's totally moved me to almost tears. He is amazing truly. A bit like Django.
Excellent video Phil, thanks for covering one of the best guitarists that doesn't always get a lot of attention or notice!
Hello guys
I was lucky enough to book Phil for a concert in Switzerland in 1993.
