Hey guys, this is very common on VQs after a swap. I've done this before.. and a bunch of friends. The reluctor wheel for the crank sensor is on the flywheel. The flywheel has a hole on it that needs to be lined up with a pin on the back for the crank, if it is not lined up it will have a bad misfire (if its only off one bolt) or it will not fire at all if its completely off. Just rip the trans out and check it, esp if the customer did it him self.
I like the way you guys come together and think of solutions. Each person is looking and giving insight on how to get the job done. No one is sitting around being a dick . Great work guys, earned a subscriber
As someone who’s had to fix so many things on my stock 03 G35 it’s good to see the pro’s get stumped on this stupid thing too. Loved the video and share the same pains 😂
@@DcBoy261 yea I had did a delete on it because the other one of course just gave up on life but I’m not gonna replace the delete until it goes or until my engine blows up
I love your guys videos. It's awesome seeing the day to day work as mechanics with all the weird customer complaints, the funny moments and the frustrating parts of the business. Awesome content 👌 10/10
Its the NATS that has failed on the vehcile. It's an extremely common issue with the G35s. I had it happen with my old 2006 G35 Coupe. I had to send off the ecu to get reflashed and the deleted the NATS system from the ECU. Solved it right away.
Can also use Nissan data scan2 and a 9 dollar usb to obd2 cord scanner to just re program the key to the body control module. NATS is a common issue on the g35s for sure though.

Did one of these a while ago, was an HR motor though. The fans coming on immediately is a Nissan failsafe, it means there's a problem with the ECM reading output from the motors sensors which typically means the pins are switched in the engine harness plug. Another issues was the pinouts for the cam sensors. The cam sensors on JDM motor are pinned opposite of the US motor and read backwards when looking at the waveform for the cam pickups. The crank sensors read differently as well and required me to use the US crank sensor but swap the pin positions for it in the JDM plug so the it would read correctly. Swapping the harness was a good thought. But you still have the sensors themselves outputting the signals wrong. I love wiring & electrical so this would be my playground. This on top of the Nissan IPDM and CANBUS systems are a RATS NEST of circuits lol. Makes it fun for people like me to go make it work.
(Pre video finish) Crank sensor or something along those lines. I remember when I did a JDM swap on my 02 WRX - USDM crank gear \ sensor and driver side cam gears \ sensor had to be swapped over to the JDM motor to start and run properly.
i did an sr swap on my 240 and switched it to a distributor setup started immediately no issues just had to adjust the timing.. whats weird is electrical fans would make them motor die..
had a vehicle with no spark. twsting showed coils had ground with key off but did not with key on. spliced in a new ground wire from coil harness to grounding strap stud on firewall, and then there was spark.
Also, a common issue on these engines is the cam positioning sensor will go bad randomly without warning. There are two on each side on the back side of the motor. The engine will crank and not start when just one goes.
I had a bought a 03 350z had a bad gasket so I ended up just a doing a jdm motor swap on it and I’m literally in the same position rn trying to figure out why it wasn’t turning I had changed the ecu, got a new wire harness, tested the starter , thought it was a grounding issue so I put a lot of ground wires and after everything nothing worked until I noticed the engine wasn’t spinning and it was locked up that’s why you always get warranty guys
This car is notorious for the cam sensors, If they are bad it wont start sometimes clearing the code will fix but not always. Ik these guys know what their doing but for anyone else that's getting spark and fuel this could be your problem. Hope this helps someone. Hope everyone had a Happy and Blessed day!
Easy tip for Nissans if cooling fans come on the second you turn the ignition on it’s in fail safe bc the ECM isn’t communicating which means bad ECM or bad connection somewhere in the harness
I haven’t swapped my engine still on my vhr 37 but same issue, crank no start. Fuel is good , but also decided to just send it out to a nissan expert to check it out for me
I have a few of these and have built a few and will say the fans running when the key is in the on position means the ecu has no power its a fail safe so it either is having an issue with the NATS or something wasnt plugged in correctly under the dash
With ANY belt drive engine - not applicable in this case - first thing I do is check the belt is still driving the cam-belts - with older engines it was a simple case of popping the dissy cap and seeing it it turned, or removing the oil cap and seeing if the cam/cams was/were turning.
I had a Nissan maxima where it was a no start and kept blowing a fuse that wouldn’t let the car start I noticed the fans would turn on as soon as u try to start the car and it was a fan relay that was shorted
I have a rusty Hyundai that I am restoring. I put on the brake calipers and added brake fluid trying to get a stiff dead pedal. It leaked out all over the ground because I didn't tighten the nipples first. WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO ME?!!!
Lol have you try finishing watching the video where I meantion there is no ecu communication but at the end we got it connecting and was not connected right

My friend did a jdm swap on his 04 g35 n it was the flywheel having an extra tooth making it lose the position of the crank and losing spark
Nissan are weird like that! Newer Nissans have actually teeth around the flywheel! I work for Nissan 12 years as a master technician
There’s usually a difference in the Cam/Crank reluctors between USDM and JDM, would definitely cause a crank no start!
this is what im betting on aswell. its WAY too common. nissan made junk crank/cam sensors lol.

I would love to work with these guys! Funny, genuine and they knkw their stuff
Thanks for the tips, plan to do a JDM k24 stock swap for longevity... Will reuse most USDm parts and wiring for my new motor
There’s a fuse in the panel near the battery it’s a 10 amp and it commonly blows on those and doesn’t give the ecm power swap it and you’ll be good
I’ve done about 6 vq swaps and I never ran into this issue … they missed something probably the flywheel is off timing
might be the flywheel actually good eye

Easiest fix and common issue with these is the crank/cam sensor. replace both and see if it fires.
I had a similar issue with a jdm engine harness short out the ecu cause the the car was usdm, but that was just one problem 😂

good thing VQ's are chain driven.

Yes, hence the aside in the first sentence.
That said, chains do snap, or jump if the tensioner(s) or guides fail.
Them crank sensors on the VQs are notorious
Nah, at the end that motor sounded like Jumanji, that shit is cursed 100%
Cam and crank sensor, or the ipdm integrated in under hood fuse box
Man, that red tube from the brake cleaner could drop in at any momment....
Love the videos guys! Keep it up, Mike from Philippines.
I bet it has to due with the reluctor wheel or crank sensor, You can tell somethings not sparking it correctly
I did not have this issue when I swapped new motor in. Got real lucky
Love these videos, it’s always 4 guys doing nothing and 1 guy doing something
Oh i wish these guys would've taken a look at my old Mitsubishi Montero Sport that thing had so many issues I sold it😂
Crank sensor & also dont forget the throttle body because they are programmed to the key
I would go to the crank sensor and work from there. Maybe flywheel area?
Needs an ecm. That’s why the fans kick on.
I don’t miss the G35 at all car gave so many headaches
What about the 37?
Remove crank sensor n crank it while stomping on the gas. Flywheel marks isnt alligned
I had a Nissan maxima where it was a no start and kept blowing a fuse that wouldn’t let the car start I noticed the fans would turn on as soon as u try to start the car and it was a fan relay that was shorted
the service for this job was worth more than the car.
Fans turn on without start makes me believe it’s one of the cam shafts sensors or crankshaft sensor
Wait. So compression and timing doesn't count? Hehe.
Could also be a bad ecu or a unmatched ecu no spark is going to come from ecu timing
USDM ECU and JDM flywheel? Crank signal could be mismatched.
I miss working on cars daily now I do towing but it's boring wonder if y'all hiring I live 8min from this shop 😅
spark - yes, gas - yes, but wont start.... ECM or Timing belt. if the motor has been swapped before.. ECM.

Someone in the background smackin the fuck out of a wheel bearing huh😂😭
Fans kicked on as soon as you turned the key. That means the ecm is done for. Try pulling codes and see if the ecm communicates back.
Lol have you try finishing watching the video where I meantion there is no ecu communication but at the end we got it connecting and was not connected right

Hey, if you guys need someone to edit the back ground noise out of your videos I’ll do it in like 15 minutes for you free of charge.
Check if the key is talking to the immobilizer that's would cause that
nats, swapped a motor in mine wouldnt start had an immobilizer code deleted nats started right up
Cam shaft position sensors?

i know how to do electronics and harnesses. and im up here in big bear

before it starts im gonna say firing order or broken coil packs.
so what happen if there fuel and spark what can be wrong
I bet the installed the fly wheel incorrectly.
those fan kicking on is going to kill ur battery when its not on
It's the starter fuse
Ecm is shorted out somewhere I bet. Happens a lot after DIY swaps and owners hooks things up wrong along with jump starting.
Temp sensor going out causes fans to kick on as well
Unplug the crank sensor and bet it will start
Crank angle sensor
