I'm 42, and I'd played Dragon Quest from very first one. This ending made me cry by Echoes of an Elusive Age.

This is my first Dragon Quest and i was FUCKING HYPED. I always had a distant admiration for this franchise,and man,i have been missing out on a lot

So DQ 11 is the prequel to the Erdrick saga!
I believe it is a prequel to the Erdrick saga, The Zenithian Sage, and the Millennium Saga. The ending created 3 TimeLines. One where Yggdrasil was destroyed but, restored. Another where Yggdrasil was never destroyed and, The (time traveling) Luminary destroyed Calasmos. The last in where Serenica went back with advance knowledge, and destroyed what we all assume was Calasmos in the original timeline. I have a pet theory that each timeline became a different saga somehow.
Finally. A boss that speaks in RUclips Rage All-Caps.

I just finished the final boss and was wondering how do I access the ending to marrying Gemma (Or any of the other characters apparently)?
Was I meant to save my progress in Cobblestone before Veronica and Serena took me to the world tree (Which I didn't?!) then load game from there?
Or will the game always start off with Calasmos waiting to be defeated? (If so, how do I get married from there?)

They could just remake the first three games into one. so people could replay them again.

@@luckyyolo5039 No. The first 3 games are their own thing. 3, 1, and 2 are the order they take place. So if 11 is a prequel to 3, then it has no relation to any of the other games
It's super dope that you use the Sword of Light, remove his shadow barrier, and Zoma's (DQ3 Final Boss) Theme starts playing. DQ sure knows how to do callbacks.
Also; Calamos straight reminds me of the final form of Lavos from Chrono Trigger, which is no surprise since Akira Toriyama did the art there too. Good stuff all round

Its funny because when I fought him I didn't know you could do that until I beat him which I realized would've saved me a ton of stress as I had to fight him 3 times at level 99 before winning.
@@AmbitiousMuscle I beat him without the sword of light too. Luckily I saved the pep pops I was given at the beginning of the game. I ended up using the invincible pep power up to prevent me from taking damage
I also wish there was a way to permanently restore Veronica to her normal state and be able to play as her fully grown.
You can give her a necklace but I'm assuming you already know since it's been 3 months

So the Erdrick trilogy (DQ 1, 2 and 3) is actually no trilogy at all, since we now know that DQ11 happened before them, in the same world.

@@ultimate9046 No, the chronology goes like this: Dragon Quest 11, 3, 1, 2, 6, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10. Dragon Quest 4, 5 and 6 are separate from the Erdrick Trilogy, they are the Zenithia Trilogy, DQ6 is before 4 because it explains the origins of the sky city Zenithia, and 7, 8, 9 and 10 are separate from each other and everything else.
@@LightStreak567 From my ubderstanding of Dragonquest 9. It takes place way before dragonquest 11 , as has lore that isnt too old about the beginning of the world tree and balance between light and dark. It also talks about the first human empire.. Dragonquest 9 background story(basically before u start the game and more lore is found throughout) is about Zenus, the supreme god before the world tree, had a daughter named Celestia. Zenus wanted to destroy humanity as it was becoming corrupt, and Celestia turned herself into the world tree and promised she would not turn back into her original form until the goodness in humans could be found. Flashfoward the good of people are formed into spirits called benevolssence which produce fyggs. The fyggs fall and your job is to collect them which you do, fastfoward a little more Corvus(an fallen angel just like you) turns into a demon and shatters Zenus who turned into 10 monsters. One of these monsters is Atlas who appears in DQ2 and says" why you turn into tree" cementing that he is in fact a shard of Zenus.
Remake of DQ1 with DQ11 graphics. Old gaming mechanic but with alot of improvements and more content. I would buy

I just finished the postgame, why am I crying? Came here to watch the whole Yggdragon scene again! Havn't played a game with this much HEART in a while, absolutely loved it!

3) The Supreme Sword of Light is the best sword in the game. Why on EARTH would you not use it and therefore discover this yourself?
@@littlemoth4956 It is not so obvious if gamers are Gen-Z or younger, gone are the times when you went to the items menu and "use" your sword like you would a potion. It's also more obvious to veterans who've played previous DQ games.

I really like the design of Calosmos, but I feel like he kinda came outta nowhere. I know you see him in his little form a couple times in the game before he regains his power, but I still wish he had more presence before that.

@@littlemoth4956 Not really. Like, I get what you mean, Colosmos' corruption twisted one of the hero's party members into becoming Mordegon. But since that's something we don't find out about until the very end, it doesn't really lend much to Colosmos' presence over the story. Especially since Mordegon basically destroys Colosmos or at least his true body) and leaves hims stranded in his harmless form back in the original timeline where Mordegon took over the world.
As much as I love this game, I feel like the true ending is a bit lacking. Not only did the post game come with the cost of some serious character developement, but in the end the rest of the party didn't even get the sendoff they would've deserved. Would've been awesome to see Erik and Mia on that treasure hunt they were talking about, or Sylvando performing in his own theater. Or perhaps Jade taking her place as the princess of Heliodor, and Dundrasil being rebuilt like Rab wanted...stuff like that would've given a great closure to each of their storylines, and I'm sad we didn't get that.
That maybe will happen on the switch version , just wait

Yeah i think that too but overall good game but with too many plot holes and some inconsistenties for me like the hero sleeping like a baby in the castle while he knew that mordegon possessed heliodor's king if calasmos didn't intervene this hole going to the past thing would have served nothing and the ending is illogical if serenica saves erdwin so the entire story of dq11 will not happen and if she doesn't succeed at saving him whats the point anyways to show them finding each other(just to have a happy ending), multiple timelines could explain that but the creator said that it was a unified one so it doesn't realy work for me and i hated the cliché parts of the story : a fallen prince who is the chosen one who will defeat the darkness whose only purpose is to take light and life (talk about ininterseting evil motives) and the castle of mordegon is called the castle of fear and his throne the seat of fear....come on squarenix your public are not only 5 year old gamers. But nevertheless it was a good 140 hours experience
So DQ 11 created 3 timelines. The Heroless one (where the hero left the timeline), The Erdrick timeline (where the hero defeats Calasmos and earn that title), and Serenica timeline (where the hero passed the luminary power to her and she travels back in time to Erdwin). I think SE is trying to create a definitive chronological timeline for all games using 11 as the starting point
So beautiful. All the grinding for levels and materials paid off. Calasmos was defeated. Hero 11 gets his happy ending. This game and Dragon Quest 8 are the only Dragon Quest games I've played. I can't wait to play more Dragon Quest games!!!!!

Yes they kinda did the series timeline out of order for a reason I think it was to end it on a good note to bring things full circle but it had such a following they just kept going

I watched this video before playing DQ1 on my pad, I still remember the moment we enter the Erdrick ancestor tomb on which is written a message from himself for his descendant. I knew it was the main character of DQ11! But still, this is strange : the hero of DQ1 wears « Erdrick’s armor » and yet he never actually worn this particular armor ? Also another funny fact: in DQ1 the hero sword can be found INSIDE the dragonlord castle. It means he found it first, then cast « evac », went far away from the castle. And finally strike the pose ! 😂
The tomb in DQ 1 is actually the tomb of Arus from DQ 3. He is the one who saved The World of Darkness by defeating Zoma at (what would eventually become) Dragonlord's Castle and became the Erdrick in DQ 1.

Nadji Chegaar oh man, I appreciate the reply, and I have gone very deep analyzing some of these questions myself, and feel I have the “right” answers to them. But, I really do not feel like giving the exhaustive reply needed to address them. I’ve long promised folks on the Dragon Quest subreddit that I would give them that long post getting into all of it, and I still have not done it. But check out what other people have discussed about it on the sub, if you haven’t. I have chimed in there with bits and pieces of my theories over the last year or so.

@@harin3934 calasmos did not go back, at leat not in his real self but in his tinker time traveling form, if notice those little ghost looking things are immune to time and time changes. so when time went back calasmos knew what to do because he held the memory of what happened.

It did start with DQ3. But Erdrick isn't a name, it's a title. The hero of DQ3 took it to emulate the original Erdrick (hero of DQ11, aka Luminary)

John Doe really you think , I feel like this is a story that the mother was reading and the only real stuff is 1-3 as they are all related to the person who gets the title of Erdrick and the rest are separate story that are books. I read somewhere that DQ11 isn’t a prequel but I could be wrong
Edit: I thought it over and yes it is a prequel because the luminary saves the Erdrea which is a separate area from the other games and in DQ3 Alefgard hasn’t been built much that’s why there is borders around it. But the mother is reading a book but it isn’t a fairy tale it’s like a legend/myth in the dragon quest world about the luminary who gets the title of Erdrick and saves the world. But I don’t get why they show the hero 1 after it if it’s a sequel to dragon quest 3 and dragon quest 2 is a sequel to 1.
Personally I played the first 4 on the NES and just before the 3rd one released I was hoping it would be how the series began to see the first Erdrick and I wasn't disappointed. After seeing this ending and the part where mom comes to wake up cooe gave me such a feeling of nostalgia remember playing 3 for the very first time. This is why I love this franchise MORE than Final Fantasy and all other RPGs. Cant wait for a 12

Ah yes, the classic end to all video games. I mean, it isn't a video game if you don't kill a god right? Seriously though this is the only dragon quest game I've played and it was amazing. If a Dragon Quest XII is released, you can bet I'm getting it. Love the fact that Alef (Dragon Quest I Hero) picks up the Sword of Light at the end. And then the final Cutscene with Arusu (Dragon Quest III Hero) * chef's kiss * perfection.

Dragon Quest XI S was the first DQ game I ever played. I beat the game, and watched the ending cutscenes without any context of playing the earlier games. I knew they were clear references, but ones I had no connection to.
Now, I've played through I and II, and just started III. Really wished I had played through those first, because watching that last scene must've been an amazing experience for longtime fans.

I’d love to see them redo the first three (beyond what was done on SNES and switch) and add more to the story of all of them. Put Dragon Quest III first, then have it lead into Dragon Quest (with some other elements added) and then go into Dragon Quest II. It would be the ultimate mash up. Tie them all together like chapters.

Just beat the real ending and I have to join with the people who say the Act 3 ending is weaker than the Act 2 ending. The story would have been stronger overall if the stuff about Calasmos and The Time Keeper were left out of the game entirely. Actually, I find the idea of the Hero going back in time just to prevent Veronica's death repugnant. They managed to save the world from Mordegon. Yes, it was hard fought. Yes, Mordegon caused destruction and there was a chance to prevent it. But the world was saved- all going back in time and doing things differently does is risk the possibility the turn of events could actually turn for the worse in unforeseen ways.
And yes, the true ending is more ideal the Act 2 ending. But they risked a very hard won victory for an unknown.
Just because consequences are undone, that doesn't make it repugnant. What's well-written about the whole scenario of going back in time, is that he heroes do an efficient job of analyzing the consequences of time travel, and whether they should take the risks or not. Anyone can write a story where consequences are undone, but having the heroes analyze the dangers of time travel was good on the part of the writers.
It extended the game into another game with more quest and more grinding to find more stuff to make more equipment to try and find more abilities and spells until it all became more redundant!
This is why I have a very deep dislike of time travel in storytelling, whether in movies, tv, books or games. It is the worst plot device any writer can use.
But I always make an exception for the Dragon Quest series for nostalgia's sake.
Honestly, I would go the other way entirely. I would've tried to find some way to include Calasmos and the timekeepers in the lore from the very start. Like maybe instead of Mordegon being the name of the big bad, he could've been calling himself Calasmos from the start to try and instill fear in the world through his presence, only for it to be revealed after his defeat in act 3 that he was NEVER Colosmos in the first place. As for the time travel/manipulation, I'm fine with it. The party doesn't really rush into it, discusses it, and does ultimately give you choice of not going through with it by simple not doing it and taking the act 2 ending as the final ending. Honestly, my biggest complaint with the story is how little presence Mordegon had in act 1.
Kevin Lee i totally agree with you, I think they just included this to bring it full circle with Erdwin however it wasn’t as good as act 2 ending or act 1 twist. They could have included a better way to bring it all together with calasmos and have him the whole time but I feel that would take way longer. Maybe the switch version will make it more clear as there will be more content

Fun fact Calasmos is voiced by Rasmus Hardiker the same person who also voices the Luminary in the English version which as TV Tropes points out on the significant double casting page that this was likely done because it suggests an innate duality between their respective roles as the harbingers of light and darkness.

That does seem to be the case. In my personal opinion out of all the Dragon Quest games I have played I would rank them like so.
1. DQ 5
2. DQ 11
3. DQ 8
4. DQ 4
5. DQ 1 - 3
Then all the rest at the bottom. A remake in this more modern style like DQ 8 and 11 for DQ 5 would be amazing as it is one of the greatest stories in JRPG history.
What gets me is that the characters we got to know died a very long time ago never to see what happens to them 😩 taking 1000 of years before dq3

Thanks for this! I got to him with a party in the 70's (and this is after spending around 10 - 15 hours grinding from 50 and building the supreme sword of light and buying the best equipment that I could find) and I just couldn't beat him. My first go was the closets I got, but the RNG from his attacks were too awful the other three times I attempted it. In the end I decided enough was enough and couldn't be bothered to put any more time into this. I loved the game up until Act 3 and just found it a massive slog from there on out :')
I recently reached act 2 and found it worse than act 1, and stopped playing altogether

Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, but how did Ortega get the Sword of Light if he's from Earth? I'm assuming Alefgard is on planet Erdrea since it's the only place where the legend of Erdrick is mentioned, and travel between the two was deadly[1] before Baramos was defeated, so...
[1] I'm just assuming Ortega went all tauntaun on the green dragon to survive.
I prefer the theory where when serenica went back in time she stopped morcant and she and erdwin had a kid and that child was dq III hero

use sword of light, his barrier ( may be) will disappear, and combo with erik, kill him in < 10 turn. 3k dmg form veronica and 9k dmg from erik will kill him instantly

This isn't the true final boss. The true final boss is after completing all of tinkertown which unlocks a tear in time in which you fight a golden version of mordegon.
Just started this game and I can safely say it’s already a great game to me! Well worth the $60!

Thanks for this. I had finished the game and lost once to the final true boss, but didn't want to put in Nother 4 hours just leveling up my party (currently at 55, but need to get to 70 to even have a chance). I got other games to play and already put in 85 hrs into this

Their is a secret one move kill that will take out the boss. If you win the special "gay muscle" magazine while winning the jackpot on the 3rd roulette wheel at the casino, it will activate Sylvando's "super flamethrower" powerup and defeat the boss in one turn.

Aaand I don’t get it, lol. I knew that I was screwed once they started introducing time travel and alternate realities to the storyline. I thought the DQ11 hero was a reincarnation of a hero who once saved the world but now this ending implies that this hero was in fact the first Erdrick and the DQ3 hero took up the title after him? Or maybe they’re somehow the same person because of magic or something?

I would love if they did A remake of All 3 Erdrick trilogy. Nd make some changes in them. For dragon quest 2 with 4characters. Allow to visit Erdwin world and fight an evil thier. And as for dragon quest 1 have the map Expanded. And allow us to have atleast 1 companion besides the useless princess. Nd yes she is useless She doesn't fight period.
