1 and 1/2 cup flour = 210 grams 1 cup castor sugar = 200 grams 1 tsp baking powder = 4 grams 1/2 tsp baking soda = 4 grams 2/3 cup sour cream = 154.6 grams 1 stick butter is equal to half cup Butter =113 grams 1/3 cup cocoa powder = 35 grams always use large eggs - 1 egg = 50 grams 6 ounces chocolate = about 85 grams 3/4 cup unsalted butter = 171 grams 1/2 cup sour cream = 115 grams 1 cup icing/powdered sugar = 160 grams so total of 2 and half cup icing sugar = 400 grams Few tips: make sure the butter and eggs are kept 30 minutes outside to reach room temperature and meanwhile pre-heat the oven. Use a oven thermometer and leave it in for precise heat. Do not open the oven all the time to check on the cake. About 8 inch pan takes 40-45 minutes. Cupcakes about 18 minutes. Hope this helps :) Cheers
I have been making this cake for the past 3 to 4 years. On all birthdays. It comes out superb. Nigella, thanks so much. You are the goddess of cooking!
I just made this and its FREAKING good its really simple to make the frosting is delicious the cake is wonderful. It fulfills all my chocolate cake cravings.
I seriously can't think of any more welcoming sight in the kitchen, either, than this chocolate cake. My god, I want this now! XD Nigella, I love youuuuuu
I made this for family the other evening, it is sooo delicious, they want me to make it tonight also. Go Nigella !! you are absolutely awesome, it is so easy, just throw everything in together hey presto!! Thanx again
@sgbloke, I've just baked the cake for a midnight feast with some friends (sans filling) and the cake is wonderfully moist, soft and spongy, I made a few changes by adding chocolate chips to the cake mixture, baking all the mixture in one larger cake pan, to get deep chunky size portions and serving it with real custard. You can easily substitute the sour cream with plain yoghurt, without noticing a difference in taste or texture and it will cut down on some unnecessary calories too!
truly THE best, fastest, easiest and true-to-looks chocolate cake I've ever made. this one and the Family Circle best-ever chocolate cake are the ones my family always request for birthdays etc. I love Nigella!
This recipe is great! I made it a few times, mostly with a different cream, you can match this with so many other rich fillings, cause the cake itself is not too sweet at all, that sour cream really does the trick!
She isn't a certified chef or anything. This just shows how normal and down to earth she is. I just love her recipes! And to those who keep saying she's gonna have a heart attack or something- she doesn't eat this stuff everyday! A little bit of what you fancy does no harm. You lot must think she just pigs out everyday! Lol.
I've tried this recipe word to word and even found the recipe of your cake to follow the exact measurements. I don't know what went wrong.. the cake was sooo hard like rock I was really disappointed! Any suggestions or ideas on how to improve baking will be much appreciated Nigella.. apart from that love ur cooking! =) peace out
I made a cake like this once.. had three sponge layers filled and covered with chocolate butter icing, smarties, maltesers and minstrels :P man I really miss that cake..
my mouth is waterin. that looks DAMN good... lol. looks like somethin you would see in a resteraunt. only difference with this i that it would actually taste as good as it looks.
Now that's what you call quick cooking! Shove everything in a food processor, Blitz, add to cake tin then shove it in the oven & done. Bish, Bash, bosh!
Hey nigela! Thanks for the reply! I wonder if I wud get green n black cocoa here in Aus! Wil try it out ot anywyz! And one more question why wudnt the rise? I guess ur cake too didn't by lukin at ur video ?!!
Depends on the (chocolate) bar. When you buy it, it usually says on the bottom how many oz/grams. When I buy a bar it's usually about 4 oz. So 1 bar of chocolate and probably a half of another bar would be about 6 oz..
Sour cream is for really just moisture in the cake. Usually certain recipes ask for buttermilk, but if you're a little naughty you can cheat and instead dilute a bit of greek yoghurt with milk to get buttermilk consistency. Happy Cooking!
(glottal attack) "AH!It is so luscious!" "...gorgeous, Gorgeous, GORgeous, cocoa.""...and finalmente..." "...making a virtue out of necessity" You're too much, Nigella!
Hey guys I just tried out this recipe! I heard comments that it was too sweet and too dry. I added about 50% more cocoa than stated, and the juice/zest of a whole large orange. The cake swelled up beautifully and remained extremely moist. For the icing, I used about 50% more chocolate, half the amount of icing sugar and a shot of triple sec. It still spread evenly and wasn't sickly sweet.
@chiabita Chocolate contains cocoa butter (fat), cocoa powder, sugar, and depending on the quality of the chocolate, milk and others. As you can see, you cannot substitute cocoa with chocolate.
i just have finished the frosting and it tastes very good, except that it is a bit too sweet for my taste. i would say that 2 cups of confectioners sugar is enough.
i use 15 drops of mint essence in the icing (has to be mint essence not flavouring). I like my mint strong, for a milder taste i would go as low as 10.
1 and 1/2 cup flour = 210 grams
1 cup castor sugar = 200 grams
1 tsp baking powder = 4 grams
1/2 tsp baking soda = 4 grams
2/3 cup sour cream = 154.6 grams
1 stick butter is equal to half cup Butter =113 grams
1/3 cup cocoa powder = 35 grams
always use large eggs - 1 egg = 50 grams
6 ounces chocolate = about 85 grams
3/4 cup unsalted butter = 171 grams
1/2 cup sour cream = 115 grams
1 cup icing/powdered sugar = 160 grams so total of 2 and half cup icing sugar = 400 grams
Few tips: make sure the butter and eggs are kept 30 minutes outside to reach room temperature and meanwhile pre-heat the oven. Use a oven thermometer and leave it in for precise heat. Well, i think those buns of yours are just as welcoming for starters
she is a GOREOUS goddesssss
She's a gorgeous, gorgeous, GORGEOUS woman. Woot woot =)
@VegetarianVampire1 That's right:) Also, the Brits call granulated (white) sugar Castor sugar.
Sour cream is for really just moisture in the cake. Usually certain recipes ask for buttermilk, but if you're a little naughty you can cheat and instead dilute a bit of greek yoghurt with milk to get buttermilk consistency.
Happy Cooking!
BEST CAKE EVER, IM EATING IT RIGHT NOW! :DDD
(glottal attack) "AH!It is so luscious!" "...gorgeous, Gorgeous, GORgeous, cocoa.""...and finalmente..." "...making a virtue out of necessity" You're too much, Nigella!
4 sticks = pound,(454g) so a stick of butter is 125g or so if i'm not mistaken
Good lawwwd 2:00 chocolate makes you feel like that.... I need chocolate right away lol
@numOOeyes you can substitute sour cream for plain yoghurt...it works well!
I want to make this for my Father's day.

Hey guys I just tried out this recipe! I heard comments that it was too sweet and too dry. I added about 50% more cocoa than stated, and the juice/zest of a whole large orange. thank you so much for the recipe, i replaced the sour cream with eggnog since its around christmas time :)
@LoquaciousByNature
actually castor sugar is finer than granulated :) so they're two different varieties really :)
@chiabita Chocolate contains cocoa butter (fat), cocoa powder, sugar, and depending on the quality of the chocolate, milk and others. As you can see, you cannot substitute cocoa with chocolate.
Greeny girl i used 250 gram instead of 300. In the beginning its a bit runny but when you let it for a while it turns rlly good.
She keeps making eyes at me!
Flirtatious Minx!
8-)
i just have finished the frosting and it tastes very good, except that it is a bit too sweet for my taste.
i would say that 2 cups of confectioners sugar is enough.
This cake is my own family's favourite! I make this when I feel like it! And, it's gone in two days...
i use 15 drops of mint essence in the icing (has to be mint essence not flavouring). I like my mint strong, for a milder taste i would go as low as 10.
