Dan I like your energy and honesty. There's an expression "don't let perfect stand in the way of good". Too many people try for perfection and wind up giving up. Your goals are clear and you enjoy your hobby - that's what counts. And I think the cars look just fine.
After sitting here and watching the video, I am wondering why I enjoy this channel so much and it came to me. It’s Dan! Aside from the great projects, his obvious skills, and hard work ethic, he has a likable personality. That quality and his ability to verbalize the way he goes about his projects with a bit of humor and devil may care (“it will be fine”) attitude keeps the viewer’s attention. I like the Canadian accent and the fact that he keeps it clean and family friendly. Through all the problems and sweat, Dan seems to be a happy guy. BTW, nice job “smoocin’ the ‘57!
In the 50 years I've been doing body work, I seldom use an air board, even though I've had one from the start. Usually rough out filler with a da or "mud hog", an 8 inch da. Even will use a 9 inch grinder to rough it out, although that's really dusty. Otherwise, block by hand. Much easier now with modern fillers. Regardless of what method used, it's time consuming. The first 80 % is easy, it's the last 20% that takes the most time. All depends how straight you want it. Did a 59 Caddy convertible for a guy that was very meticulous, those 9 foot long quarters almost made my arms fall off! Spent more time working on those and the hood than the rest of the car! It all boils down to what you want. Kudos to you Dan, for knowing what you want and having the skill to do it.
Hello Dan as an ex mechanic and amateur body guy I’ve worked with lots of master mechanics and body guys but you my Friend are amazing and you should be very proud of the work you do and saving al these beautiful pieces of art it’s a pleasure watching your channel keep it up Dan Poncho Nick
I can see the amount of work you did sanding by the amount of dust on the floor! The most important part of sanding/bodywork is so others can see nothing. You know there was work done, and other people don't. Nice work Dan.
I always enjoy watching Dan ! Great sense of humor and love his attitude about the cars he builds. He enjoys what he does and sharing his work. As long as Dan is happy with his work it doesn’t matter what other haters think. The ones of us that enjoys his work are the ones that enjoy doing our own work on our rides. I am the kind of guy that just gets it the way I like it ! That’s what Dan does…he gets it like he wants it! Keep up the great work and videos Dan! 👍🏻
I could be wrong but I do believe this to be the 4 door hard top from my home town of Wynyard Saskatchewan from back in the 70’s. at any rate, great to see this old girl come back to life. I suspect you don’t have much more bondo on this car than some of the high dollar cars we see on some other channels. They just don’t show it.
it's looking good Dan . bodywork isn't that hard if you work smart. the smoother you put filler on the less work it is sanding it smooth. buy a bodywork cheese grater to shape thick filler as it starts setting up B4 it gets too hard. on long areas like the lower door put the filler on smooth from end to end in one pass. the less start an stop clumps sands so much EZR. don't work around parts that can come off, it will make everything much faster to sand. your doing a good job .
Nice work. For every low dent there is a "too high" spot. I hammer and dolly everything I can first, and if no dolly tap down high spots. Once you putty, tapping down a high spot is tough, and the bondo often cracks. Might want to try a long wood grater on bondo before you long board it, saves some sand paper. Nice work.
Looks awesome Dan! Some cars need a good patina. Some need a great paint job. And some just need a cheap driver quality paint job. Every car is different. And I love that you build all 3!
Filler isn’t terrible unless you’re buying that fancy Rage Ultra at $95 a gallon. I like USC Icing at $35 a tube. But I ordered a gallon of SPI high build (Turbo) $190 for a gallon, I nearly chocked. I did a quick PPG / DuPont search for similar ….. $500+ a gallon…..for high build primer ….. let that sink in…..
@@markmckeachnie4484 - what do you use for filler? I have a gallon of 3M Platinum That my Buddy at a body shop says they use. It’s very thin and I describe it as watery. Obviously an exaggeration, it works well, probably mixed with some type of reducer at the factory. Dynatron Dynalyte is decent stuff for the money, you could thin that out for poor mans Rage Ultra
So glad to see that you are making the cars that you build nice, all the hard work and effort that you put in to them and not finishing them properly does not make your hard work justified. Great job looking very good
Don’t feel bad Dan you are just doing a Winnipeg restoration. That was the way every classic car in Winnipeg was done in the 80’s and 90’s but at least you are welding panels on instead of screwing them on with sheet metal screws like some of the cars I looked at 🤣😂
Nice body work on the convertible, Dan. Glad to see you using the long board. I know you have no room behind the quarter panel to hammer out that low spot, but why not weld the screw tip of a slap hammer to the dent as you pull out the dent? Break the welds and weld the tip to another spot. No need to drill holes. I've seen this done on several channels. You can do this quickly and still do a top notch repair. I'm always leery of going more deep than an eighth of an inch with schmoo. Enjoying the build, take care.😊
Love it…as you so well said “good from far, far from good” I think it’s going to look awesome with some shiny red paint rolling through the intersection of Portage and Main 👍
Did you oil the air board ? 2 drops of air tool oil in the inlet before use works wonders and should help with the sticking. Great work !! Your videos are great !!
Well Dan, it's nice that you are finally doing a complete paint job to make it nice. A couple of things, you could have gotten that larger dent out on the quarter panel by using either a stud gun or just tacking on a few pieces of coat hanger wire and then pull with a dent puller, and why didn't you take the door handle and those three small pieces of front fender trim off? Would make it a whole lot easier to do the job better. Other than that, it's looking great.👍👍
20 footers are great bang for your buck,10-20 grand paint jobs are seen at a show for a few minutes at a time, each to their own but I'm a 20 foot guy, if I had thousands of dollars for paint I think I'd rather use it to buy another project ! quite relaxing watching someone else panel a car ,good work Dan
When you do the other side, place your car jack under the frame on the passenger side about mid way and jack up the whole side of the car. This will put the middle of the door at about eye level when you're sitting in the chair. Much easier on the back when you're sanding the lower door and rockers.
Wow,lookit you getting at it with the sanding. Nothing wrong with putting in the work to get a ten footer. So sick of people putting as much or more effort to patina. Yep, Way Cool guy's.
Hay Dan, I used to clean my sandpaper on my air file by putting a wire brush in the vice with the bristles up, and just put the file, paper down on the brush pull trigger and...presto! Clean paper!!!
Looks great frome here Dan! And as far as the bodywork and prep goes, i wouldnt do it any different! Except weld the door lock holes up. Lol. Hope to see it this summer! I plan on cruising a lot. Not just putting around my little town either!

All those perfect 6 figure "metal finished" cars that you see in magazines end up getting completely sculpted out of filler. You're doing just fine on the '57, these cars are supposed to be fun!
One tip: if you fill over a door gap, trim the gap out with a razor blade when the filler is semi hard. You should still be able span the gap with a long sanding board or air board and it’s a helluva lot easier than a zip disk after the fact.
Too many people stress over perfection. Sure it's nice, but then do you REALLY enjoy it? I think i enjoy more, a nicely done driver quality car.
