I got the Minaal Carry 2.0 and my girl got the Allpa 35 and both have been great so far even after a few years. The mission of Cotopaxi and similar brands like Fjallraven is definitely something worth backing up.
Chase it's great to see you check this bag out, helps to reaffirm my own experience. After months of searching, I finally pulled the trigger on this bag (in black) about 2 months ago for a two week trip to Italy. Forced me to downsize but not compromise, cause you can still fit a ton of stuff in here. Put a tablet, passports and travel (business!) papers in the laptop compartment. Got that swing off the shoulder action to grab the passport for the friendly TSA people. The grab handles all around the bag are understated and excellent for the overhead bin on the plane. As you said earlier in the video, you figure out how you want to pack this bag as you use it.
Sup Andrew sorry I'm a little late asking this question. 2 years late but hopefully you still respond. What color was the rain cover for you black one?
@@andrewt9713 Lmaoo Andrew T you are the best! I thought there was 100% no chance I would get an answer but figured I'd ask anyway. Thank you so much I really do appreciate it
I replaced my Farpoint 40 bag with this last year and I find I can fit more stuff in it and it's not as huge as the Farpoint was. I absolutely love this bag so far! I bought it mainly for the way it opens like a suitcase and has the zippered compartments to hold your packing cubes in when you open it up. I don't use the hip belts so I tuck the behind the back panel and they act as a lumbar support. When packed, I don't find it floppy, but I also use an Eagle Creek Pack-It garment folder on that side that has a semi-rigid shape. I also like that it fits under the airline seats in case overhead storage is full.
As someone with a Farpoint who is irked by its size and clumsy organization, and has been eyeing this bag, I'm glad I found your comment. I think it's time to pull the trigger.
Tom Bihn is apparently coming out with a new bag called the Synik that is essentially a 30L Synapse w/ a laptop compartment, upgraded shoulder straps, and clamshell opening; Can't wait to see you get ahold of one!
I've definitely fallen down the one bag rabbit hole. (Friends and family are likely starting to wonder why I can't stop muttering about taking less with me on trips.) Waffling between a 28L I picked up and something like this Cotopaxi. The loaner bag I could borrow is 40L and seems way too huge to run around Europe with. On the conscious consumption front, really loving the idea of keeping this next bag for life. I recently (Feb 2019) had to get rid of about 90-95% of everything I owned and I'm trying hard to only buy why l what I truly need.
I love my Allla 35l Del Dia! It’s way more interesting, and I love that someone got to have fun picking colors. As an artist and sewist, I feel that Del Dia would be a nice break from the same old, same old all day. I’m going on a trip to India in a couple of months and I’m not taking my laptop. I’m considering putting a piece of corrugated plastic in that compartment, to add some structure. I’ll have to do a test pack-I’ve only used lighter loads with no laptop before.
I still love this bag, it will be my car travel bag when i get back to the great state of Oregon. However it will be packed inside of a suitcase this time as a packing cube for an afghan I crocheted for my mother.
Glad to see you review this bag. I was considering it before our trip to Peru last year. I love the organization, especially the side access zippers and the low-tech zipper security feature. But I ultimately decided against it because A) the cost of getting it shipped to Canada was prohibitive and B) I read a thoughtful review by a woman who said it wasn’t a comfortable carry for her 5’4” self. I purchased the Osprey Farpoint 40 instead which was a very comfortable carry but the organization irked me. I’ve since passed the Osprey on to my daughter and purchased a Hynes Eagle 38L. It’s a budget range bag but it’s a decent carry and the organization appeals to me. The true test will be our trip to New Zealand this fall.
So jealousy of you having so many bags/pouches to choose from for specific trips. A video idea for you: what/how do I/we pack for XXXX series and thoughts behind that. It could be what your family bring for 3week summer trip in Tuscan. What bag(s)/pouches would you choose and thoughts behind that. Or 2 weeks in Indonesia (beach related stuff), or 1week hike in Kilimanjaro (cold and camping?), or 2 weeks in Japan sight seeing (camera gear stuff), and it can goes on. In those, not only you can talk about bags but other kind of products you haven't yet talked about and you really liked before during surfing/hiking/skiing, etc.

Best bag guy on the tube. I even watch reviews I have no interest with. That’s a sign of someone with a great personality and skill set. Well done dude
I understand your criticism of the floppy back, but IMO, it helps to reduce to overall weight of the pack. When you fly those LCCs in Europe, you have 22 pounds total to work with. If your bag on its own takes 25% of that, it makes it a little harder to pack. If you put a laptop in this bag, wouldn't that help stiffen up the back panel to your liking?
I just looked for a review for that specific bag but listening to you is so nice and you’re so inspiring and seems like you have great values! Excited what other videos you have 😊

Good point in committing to travelling the way a bag is designed. I was one of the ppl that was searching perpetually for a bag. Bought this bag after your end of video tangent. Using it in 2 weeks
I love my Tom Bihn Synapse 25L and now this if must for longer trips. I love the colors and already durability of it. Can't wait for longer trips to become available. If shorter trips I have an idea for that.
Thanks Chase for this review. I'd read about Cotopaxi and decided to take the plunge. When it arrived I wasn't sure how to make it all 'work'. Your video explained everything and now I can't wait to pack up this Friday and take it on a test trip (only 3 days to LA). I plan to travel a lot and want to make sure it's hassle free. This helps!
I really like Cotopaxi's mission/business model! However I've been unable to find a bag they make that really speaks to my "persnickety"😉 needs/wants. I sometimes feel a little bad as I often think I should compromise a bit for the sake of the awesome business model practices of a company like Cotopaxi for my next bag but I'm still looking as I want my next bag to be near perfect for my needs. This channel has fortunately or unfortunately, cant decide which, opened my mind to the possibility of not having to compromise much or possibly at all. I currently use and Osprey Ozone 46 which works pretty well but I did have to customize it by adding a shoulder strap as I like to be able to carry my do it all bag single shoulder strap style for everyday carry and then when I travel or even hike or camp with it I pull out the stowable back back and hip straps. So many great bags and so many great Chase reviews! Makes it hard to choose and hard to compromise when you see all the possibilities. You think to yourself my near perfect bag is out there or soon will be with all these great bag manufacturers out there making such great stuff.
We use this to store my son’s medical equipment so we can hike with him. I put a suction machine, emergency trachs and am I bag and he quick grab pocket hold all the diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes. I wish I would have bought a travel bag for him years ago. We are now able to go hiking and just be around town with my hands free. Also I have destroyed other bags we have used because of the heavy use and this doesn’t even look used. Also very comfortable. 😀
Yesss!! I’ve been waiting for this review! I’ve taken this bag to DC, LA and, Nashville. I love this bag but the water bottle situation is a bit annoying
I got this bag as a gift from work . Haven’t used it yet , but I feel it will be useful on some weekend trips I have planned this summer . Also as a personal item on an airplane . I know I wouldn’t have spent $175 on it though
I used this bag on an Alaskan fishing trip last week. My only criticism is that when you put a laptop (MacBook Pro 13 inch) in the rear compartment it makes the back of the pack stiff and hard, which makes it uncomfortable to carry. No big deal if you are only lugging it around airport terminals. Probably wouldn't want to carry it further than that. The waist strap sits too high on me so it doesn't put the weight onto my hips. Maybe I need to loosen off the shoulder straps to make that work. Anyway, I am very happy with the bag overall. It feels like it will take a lot of punishment but the manufacturer standing behind it gives extra confidence.
The best review hands down! Wondering how this bag compares to the Patagonia Black Hole MLC? I'd be very interested in seeing a review comparing those two bags.
@chase Reeves I found out about you 3 days ago and binged watched your videos EVER SINCCCCCE!!!!! [ Videographer/Photographer equipment hauler] Thank Goodness for you!
About time! I considered buying this instead of the Minaal. It still seems like a great, feature-packed alternative (although I don’t love the look of it as much) and I like what the company is about :)
awsome review! i went on their site and the lack of pics just wasn't enough for me but you've got me sold! regarding the softness you could add something inside yourself or amazon do supports you can put inside backpacks
Thanks Chase! I have been waiting for a while for you to review this bag. I had purchased mine a few months ago and I love it! It looks good and has great functionality. I also love the fact that the money I spent goes towards a great cause!
Thank you very much for the informative content, easy and pleasant to watch with no crazy music and video cuts! I just purchased the 35L Alla and I'm excited to try it out.
I got the 30 L Topo Travel Bag for a long weekend from Southern California to Philadelphia during winter and fit everything I needed, including entertainment for a miserable layover both ways. Although everything fit, and there was a sense of satisfaction in getting it just right, my Pixelbook came back a little bent from being shoved into the laptop compartment, even with a sleeve. The 40 L might allow for a more comfortable fit at the seams, even though it looks bigger. Another great weekend backpack is the Fjallraven Travel Pack, very sleek design and clamshell form factor with great external access and quick access, with separate laptop compartment. I'd love to see thoughts and reviews on it!
You said some of you have been looking for the perfect bag for way too long and this is one to just go for... so I finally did! Pumped, can't wait for it to get here.
Great review! Just checked out this bag in person. My dealbreakers: zippers can’t be locked with little TSA locks & no load lifters on straps. I was so bummed bc this bag is beautiful & it’s solid!
I was bummed too about the lack of load lifters on the 35L enough to consider the 42L which has them, but then I realized I can just sew some on if I find I really need them. I want to be able to strap my daypack to the exterior on transit days, which I know will mess with the center of gravity. - Re: TSA locks: I've read conflicting things about their value, but if they're a deal breaker for you, what about putting them through the same openings where the nylon cord is threaded through the zippers? It seems like the mini locks would work for that, and they also have those locks with the longer loop. I know myself and already know I'm not going to want to fiddle with the fabric zipper security loops on the bag except in heavy pickpocket areas, so my plan is to just pack some zip ties as a deterrent when I feel I really need it, and hope cutting them off doesn't don't dull my nail clippers too much! lol
Used this bag for a yeah! It was really great and i LOVED that front pocket. I ended up going to a GR3 though, because of the "lumpy-ness". +1 for Cotopaxi, they make great gear. Awesome review C-money.
I can finally...retire(?) from bag reviews...I have been waiting SOOOO LONG for you to review this bag. I mean...I indiegogo'd it because I was into it from the git go. But it's cathartic to know the thoughts you had were regarding design *cough cough*rigidbackpanel*cough* were the same I had upon my first, and subsequent, uses. Also...point of fact The harness system is a little uncomfortable for my wife. It's not the BEST female friendly bag as it slides off her shoulders frequently.
@@stevojaco I've thought about cutting the thin top attachment on the back panel where you stow the straps. That way I can slide my tom bihn internal frame into the closest panel, or it could be used as another pocket. Might be an option

I just ordered the Cotopaxi as a carry on for my travels for figure skating competitions that I have to take a plane. We were told to not check our skates or completion outfits because they cannot be replaced if they are lost. I’m an avid backpacker and have through hiked before with both the Zpacks and the hyper light packs. I tried to pack them both as a carryon with my competition stuff and there was no organization. I’m hoping I can use this to make a good carryon for the skating stuff...
I used to not like you bc u shat on my incase bag in a video, but I actually like your content. The last few minutes of this gave me chills, you are a very passionate man.
Couldn't you just lay the rain fly flat under your packing cubes? Check the weather before you go out for the day and put it in an easier access spot if necessary.
Totally agree--I would put the rain fly in the top pocket on the exterior for easy access. I was also glad to see a review that mentioned that it shed water well without the rain fly, and the owner thinks the extra protection would only be necessary for serious downpours. I'd rather not deal with a huge shower cap if I don't have to. ; - D
This company is named after an Ecuadorian volcano!! From Ecuador! a beautiful country north of Peru! “Very Peruui”? Hmmm Chase, you should travel to Ecuador, get to know it, and take this bag ;) Also, Peru is an incredible beautiful country! Love it, been there, it’s great! Love your videos, I watch all the time! Just acknowledging Ecuador here!
Great review!! Can you review the new Patagonia 32L black hole backpack? Patagonia has a video on it but it doesn’t show all of the compartments/features. Thanks and keep up the great reviews!
Peak design bag is good to travel but if you have more stuff on the bag. The strap is not really comfortable in a long run. I wish its more comfortable as the Errant strap or the ebags strap is more cushion. Over all its a good bag. I have all peak design bag and tried them all. waiting for a good rolling travel hand carry bag that is good in my taste. Thanks
Excellent review, very informative and insightful. I love your positive outlook on life. Thanks for this video and for advocating for a positive, meaningful , life-affirming relationship with the planet.
Finally!!! I love this bag, been using it since the kickstarter for all of my car and plane travel. You're not wrong about being floppy and too big for daily carry... I usually leave some stuff in it, so it doesn't get floppy. Hah.
😂 😂😂 “no picky pocketies” love it. I love this guy. He’s like that friend you always wanna find a reason to hang out with. He makes doing boring shit fun.
Im so grateful you did a review on this bag. It is one I have been looking at for a long time, hoping you would be reviewing it because I love the information you provide in your reviews. I was wondering if you were planning on doing a review of the Nya Evo Fjord 36?
Cotopaxi is an awesome company. Beautiful, well-made things with a great mission. Love it! And I bring a Ricoh GRii for a tiny, “real” camera. No zoom (use your feet!), but it’s an amazing camera. They just came out with the iii. Great review.
Love the bag review as usual - And I do have a lot of love for my Fuji X100S so I know what you mean. It isn't just the quality of the photo. It just feels really good to use - hate to use the word ergonomics as it short changes the emotions. Keep up your great reviews.
@Chase hey man, do you think that it will be possible to pack an camera icu in the main compartment, so when you use the direct zipper access to this compartment its kind of a "camera bag"? Dream combo would be to put the packed rugged sling oder pd every day sling into that kind a use (or a Tenba...). Looking forward to hear from you or anybody else who could try that for me. Thanks a lot for entertaining us so much with your reviews, take care and stay safe - all the best from Europe
OK so after watching your review I decided to buy this bag. However, because it looked kinda big I decided t o go for the 28l one. Hopefully it won't be too small. I do like the looks of the alpa bag. Thanks for the review
Thanks! What are you thoughts on the Allpa 28l? Looking for a bag that fits under the plane seta, but can hold as much as possible. Wondering if the 35L will compress to fit in under that plane seat. Great review!
Chase, I need your opinion...my wife and I will be traveling to Switzerland next year and we've decided to see the country by rail. To make getting around as easy as possible, we're going to be using travel backpacks. This will be our first major foray into traveling any real length of time using backpacks and not "regular" luggage. For our first time out of the gate, would you recommend something like the Cotopaxi with its 35L space or something a bit larger like the Toretuga Setout at 45L? My wife is convinced she can't pack two weeks of her life into a backpack of any size. I want this to be a positive experience as I think I can talk her into similar trips in the future using a travel backpack if this excursion goes well. Thanks in advance for your time and feedback.
Whoa, great question. The bigger the bag, the more it can fit, the heavier it can get. Setout is great for that because massive capacity, robust harness system. This is gonna be a great trip! Use my links if u caaaaaaan
The only things you NEED need are your passports and medicine and documents. Everywhere has a laundry, everywhere has stores, everywhere has clothes to buy. I used to be like your wife and tried to pack everything. Only just recently I went with one carry on for 2 weeks in South America. So freeing! I used everything I brought, just bought a couple things I hadn't. With a big suitcase, you're just temped to bring more and by the end of the trip, you'll find you didn't even use half the stuff you brought!
I like what you had to say about conscious consumption, and companies that are trying to make good products in an ethical way. I think I might subscribe to your Patreon !

When are you publishing a review of the Allpa 42L?
awsome review! i went on their site and the lack of pics just wasn't enough for me but you've got me sold! regarding the softness you could add something inside yourself or amazon do supports you can put inside backpacks
Thanks Chase! I have been waiting for a while for you to review this bag. I had purchased mine a few months ago and I love it! It looks good and has great functionality. I also love the fact that the money I spent goes towards a great cause!
I love my Allpa35, got it after the Indiegogo campaign and have loved it ever since. Glad you finally got around to trying it Chase.
Thank you very much for the informative content, easy and pleasant to watch with no crazy music and video cuts! I just purchased the 35L Alla and I'm excited to try it out.
It doesn't have a space for my papers man... my business papers.
Are you employed sir?
Hands down the best review I've seen on this pack so far. Thank you!
I LOL'd when you said "picky pocketies" that is what I will call them from now on. I really love this bag and am about to get one, Great Review!!!
You said some of you have been looking for the perfect bag for way too long and this is one to just go for... so I finally did! Pumped, can't wait for it to get here.
He's the Steve Carell of adventure gear reviews.
Time to a review of the Allpa 42 now!
I’m a female, 5’4 and just used this bag for three weeks through Greece and Italy. I had no issues. I LOVE this bag. Will buy one more for my kids.
@chase or anyone-- I wonder how this would do with a frame sheet installed?
@@stevojaco I've thought about cutting the thin top attachment on the back panel where you stow the straps. That way I can slide my tom bihn internal frame into the closest panel, or it could be used as another pocket. Might be an option
@@nvalles2565 Thanks for commenting on your positive experience with the Cotopaxi bag. I'm 5'4" too and am really hoping this bag feels as good as it looks.
@@goingtobed I was wondering if a Tom Bihn or other frame would address this! Did you ever try your hack? Would love to hear your experience if you don't mind sharing. : - )
Viva Ecuador!
You should review the 42L that just came out!!
Been waiting on this one man. Just finished a 4 month trip in Asia with this bag 👾
Well you're the one that should be doing a review
Did you ever feel like you needed more space i am doing the same trip for a similar amount of time but am torn between the 35 and 42
Interesting that the 35 doesn't have a stiffener plate in the back. I just did a review of the 28L version, and it has a plate behind the back pad.
Don't need a bag right now, but love watching your stuff 👍
Still waiting to hear more about the collaboration with Pakt.
Hey Chase. Have you reviewed the Rocky Mountain Underground mountain briefcase? If not will you please? If so. Link?
Great review!! Can you review the new Patagonia 32L black hole backpack? Patagonia has a video on it but it doesn’t show all of the compartments/features. Thanks and keep up the great reviews!
I want to like Cotopaxi bags but they all seem so floppy. thanks for another awesome review Chase!
Thanks
Torn between this and the AER travel pack. Ugh.
Please review "Amazon Basic Slim Carry On Travel Backpack Weekender".
Does this fit under airline seats?
Excellent review, very informative and insightful. I love your positive outlook on life. Thanks for this video and for advocating for a positive, meaningful , life-affirming relationship with the planet.
Chase! Can you do an under the seat one bag travel bags? Overhead storage costs are a thing on discount flyers
Yea man, the HYBRID BAGS page at matterful.co
@@chasereeves thanks man. I'm gonna pull the trigger. if the wife can spend 400 on a wallet i can throw a couple at a great bag
He makes doing boring shit fun.
video can also be named: favorite/best travel snacks
ha!
Love that camera!
Love the bag review as usual - And I do have a lot of love for my Fuji X100S so I know what you mean. It isn't just the quality of the photo. It just feels really good to use - hate to use the word ergonomics as it short changes the emotions. Keep up your great reviews.
"Clippy clapper".. I like how you speak my language 😄
Aww my, I love this bag. Does it have a shoulder strap to clip on as a over shoulder.
OK so after watching your review I decided to buy this bag. However, because it looked kinda big I decided t o go for the 28l one. Hopefully it won't be too small. I do like the looks of the alpa bag. Thanks for the review
👊
Thanks! What are you thoughts on the Allpa 28l? Looking for a bag that fits under the plane seta, but can hold as much as possible. Wondering if the 35L will compress to fit in under that plane seat. Great review!
This guy sounds like Fry from futurama. Awesome review!!!
Can you do a review on the timbuk2 impulse travel duffel backpack please? I can't find any reviews of it
Love it! Wonder how it stacks up to the eagle creek global companion?
I'd like to see him do the 65L even.
Please review the 42l cotopaxi I cant decide which to buy the 35l or 42l I love your reviews
I guess you could probably add a stiff piece of thin plastic into the laptop section if the lack of structure was super concerning for someone.
Do you think I could fit a magic air in there or should I get a topo 40l instead ?
Travel Drag, we call that soup in a sandwich.
Any suggestions on how to clean the front of it? Got some stains that I can’t seem to be able to get out.
So the question is: this or Tortuga Setout 35 l. I need backpack as lightweight as possible but with decent comfortable harness.
Both are great. Setout May be lighter.
Awesome review! Pleeaase do a vid of the new cotopaxi 50L camello duffel......love their gear
Is it any good for camping?
Can you do the trakke bannoch review please because no one do a review on this backpack
Thank you for introducing me to this wonderful company, Chase. They have some really nice jackets and stuff, too. You're doing God's work, buddy. I'll be leaving Japan for the PNW to do research on the Chinookans for my PhD at the end of August. Hit me up if you want to smoke a joint together and have an intellectual conversation.
What is the water bottle pocket you clipped to the pack?
Chase, what do you think of Osprey and Porter 46 in particular ?
This is a great review! I am convinced! Love the company and I got the Del Dia colorway
Hi Chase Can you review the Ucon Acrobatics pls ? Thanks
No false bottom? I've heard the opposite
