Nice video. MD arrived with all the bells and whistles, and even budget models had all the features, 40 sec anti skip, UV display, Bass + treble, battery life. And the very durable discs, that I can't remember skipping, ever.
It took MP3 players CDR and Napster, to better and displace he format. I'd quite happily still be using MD, if MP3 didn't happen.

Such a shame that it went the way of Betamax. It shouldn't but certain people got cold feet.

Great video, I absolutely love Mini Disc I have over 300 recorded MDs from CDs I used to rent from my local library I originally bought from Richer Sounds a Sony JBD 920 hifi deck which still works fine so very recently I bought a Sony JBD 930 ( UK tuned ) edition for £279 from eBay in mint condition and fully serviced type R hifi deck to use it with my new Marantz hifi system I also bought great quality rca phono leads connectors & the sound I’m getting with this Sony MD deck is absolutely brilliant so at the moment I’m recovering my vinyl records on to my new Sony MD recorder as I managed to buy 10 Sony brand new blank Mini Discs for 28 including delivery so a great result I will never give up the MD format is just to good to get rid of it, anyway thanks & peace ✌️

I got my first stereo deck (recordable) & it came with a portable player in 1993. I'm in the US & I was in the minority compared to Europe & Japan. In the early 2000's I sold my hardware & kept my recorded MD's. I have approximately 200+ of them & about 10yrs back I purchased 2 more decks & I collect the portables now. I own 17 portables, all Sony. I had a single SHARP portable brand new in box, but it never did work. I sold it on eBay for Parts Not Working. Shame it didn't, but hopefully whoever bought it got it fixed. All of my Sony portables work like a charm. I still make my all my new mix-tapes on MD. Thanks for sharing & long live MiniDisc!

Yes it was a very expensive format initially. I first started using them at the radio station I was presenting at. It was very convenient for pre preparing my Playlist and edit. I bought one from a shop in Liverpool full sized. I bought the discs on an offer at Richer sounds a discount Hi Fi shop. I bought more and more md Decks mainly Sony's as did my son. My favourite decks are the Semi Pro Tascam MD-350 which I own 3 of. The y also have XLR connections on the back. Used MD discs are often expensive on Ebay but I have been lucky and found some brand new reasonably priced but that's rare.

@@jimwood1968CDcollectorCAVE I always wanted a Tascam MD deck! I almost bought one on eBay, but I really don't need it, but I really don't all my portables either. lol Now that I'm older I can afford them. I have around 100 blanks of various brands I've bought over the years to record new mix-tapes on. I still only use SP to record on. I used to be really big in the 12" vinyl maxi-singles/remixes of songs. I sold most of them on eBay in the early 2000's because I thought vinyl was dead & it pretty much was, but before I sold them I recorded them all to MD. I was fascinated that you could record on a digital format. This was long before recordable CD's or MP3's.
I'm not into vinyl & actually prefer CD's & I still have them all from my beginning (at least a couple thousand), but most of my 12" remixes were not on CD yet & they did eventually put them on CD's as maxi-singles. I got into CD's early on as well. I got my 1st large stereo system in 1985 & it came with a CD player, so I was fairly early with them as well. My friends used to come to my house to see an actual CD player in action. lol
I like my digital formats! My parents financed that stereo for me & I worked a part time job after school at a local grocery store when I was 16yo. I gave my parents the money weekly to pay that system off as soon as possible. I remember it cost $1,600 USD in 1985 money. Sorry for rambling on, but it's nice to talk to like minds over MD's. Thanks again.

Still have all my MD recorders. I have 3 Sharp portable MD recorders, the MD-MS701, MD-MS702 & MD-MS722, a Sony NetMD with a docking case MZ M10 and all the gum batteries died years ago so I use either the power supply or a screw on AA batt power supply. I have 3 Sony & 1 Denon hiFi units. If I am perfectly honest I have so much competing electronics like synths. laptops, cameras, portable sound recorders, Tape Decks that I seldom have the time to use them. Nice walk down memory lane Jim.

Always recorded comedy and drama of radio first on cassette then minidisk then MP3 to CDR but just started going back to MD so easy to use and edit and doesn't die like a pc losing your files. Now record on Freeview HDD recorder and copy optically to MD as dab radio bit rate so low and mono in many cases. When first had dab could timer record onto MD all programs missed as at work no BBC sounds in those days

I agree with you a format that should have lasted a lot longer. I am just glad that I had the foresight to buy up a loads of new discs when the price crashed. Now they are quite expensive to buy even used.

@@jimwood1968CDcollectorCAVE With us, it's the exact opposite with minidisc media. They can be bought for humorous prices of 2-6€. Cassettes are different price High End.10x more. And I saw it for 120€.And I can see well.😁 I never use reading glasses.😂.
Today I have the opportunity to order an onkyo md-2521 in collector condition. The best is the price - less than two overpriced audio cassettes. So I won't hesitate for even 5 seconds and will send the order in the evening. I have had an amplifier from this brand for more than 25 years and a CD player for 10 years. MD 2521 can stand in a row with its two friends. I have only one problem. I don't know how many kilos of minidisk media I should order.😋 For a start, maybe 2kg could be enough. I can have it all at home on Monday. I am very excited. I will have a new toy. After all, boys need new toys. I've always wanted the minidisc format and I still like it.

I had a sharp MD recorder, which I bought in curry's for £80 pounds ..I lost it sadly but still have the disks and some blanks still in wrappers 😂
Maybe in a revival I might invest in a new system which I imagine would be something special.

It sounds as though you dodged a bullet by not jumping on board too early. The first iteration of ATRAC had metallic artifacts and made music sound like bad cover versions performed by a band of tone deaf Daleks. As you so rightly say, older ears may not have noticed it much if at all. Problems with transparency weren't entirely fixed until ATRAC3 arrived in 1999. By that time, Dolby S had already been around for a decade vastly improving the transparency of compact cassette. At an official demonstration held by Dolby Labs, a panel of audiophiles couldn't reliably distinguish it from CD at normal domestic listening levels, so I stuck with that for many years as it was based on proven technology.
