- This time Mark has another go at fixing the PROTOTYPE BOSE car Radio / Digital Compact Cassette / Mini Disc player that came in last year. Mark is joined by Ralf from the DCC Museum (@DRDCC ), and Shazad Khan, who provides a few valuable pointers on what goes wrong with car Mini Disc players. Will it end up working?

Reichelt has stock of this ic for just over 3 euros. They are in Germany. Farnell has something that "may" work, but MOQ is 300. Same with Digikey. Cannot see it on RS.
Hopefully you get one soon so that we can see the conclusion of this cursed radio.
Unbelievable that amount of grace and patience you all have dealing with such a difficult situation. I am impressed
Love MiniDisc! My MiniDiscs still sound like I recorded them yesterday and now going on 25 years plus! An amazing product from the magical geniuses from Sony! 👍
I still use them and they are spot on
20 minutes before I go to work. Just enough for a brand spanking new mark video!
Night shift?
@@ThisIsJamesLUnfortunately yes
love his clips!
Only 16 minutes long 💔 grateful of course though. God bless mark
What a team! Great to see cooperation and no egos getting in the way of a fix!!
wow, back on the DCC!! Thanks, Mark. My life has been incomplete ever since the first DCC episode.
"The only thing that will redeem mankind is co-operation" Bertrand Russell.
“Was that on a beer mat?”
WHAT ?!?! Another cliffhanger !
Man, talk about an insanely complicated machine.
At time marker 2:30, the label on the side says "prototype material". That alone would deter me from even touching this incredibly packed piece of kit! Ah well, Mark soldiers (and solders) on undaunted!
Probably a reason these have disappeared.
Great diagnostics, as usual Mark. Thanks to Ralf and Shazad for sharing their knowledge too.
And in the next episode, the chip is flashed so it no longer requires a BCM to operate. This is a fantastic video, it shows three great people working to solve a problem that no-one actually has. Just a challenge :)
I have an Auto minidisc that will record while driving! It has a buffer in it that will let you copy music off of AM or FM. You hear a song on the radio you like, hit record, and presto. Great content, Mark. Looking forward to part 2. Amazingly, a minidisc can hold 144 minutes in monophonic mode. Great for recording 45s and AM...............
I had been wondering about this car deck Mark - very interesting progress made. Considering it's a prototype, I have to laugh at how much tech has been 'crammed' into this cage - amazing - all that's missing is a coffee maker !
I just shudder thinking this being rattled around and heat cycled for 15 years in a car. It almost looks like destined to be a failure. It has to be so much easier now to design devices with solid state media and streaming.
I would replace that one cap that had a little less ESR, otherwise I think that with that burned driver chip found, the problem is solved. If the motors survived. Another good video Mark, thank you.🤔🤓
That Alpine jacket is dope!
Shazad is an Alpine fanatic, well-known among the Alpine collector circles.
@@sw6188 Nice!
Wonderful ! Incredible to see an expert at work with also experts! Impressed ! Thank
There are those little blue SMD Inductors on the PCBs, these act as fuses in case of short circuit. Could be worthwhile to check them...
Oh bloody hell! All star cast and cliff hanger! The IC seems easy to find but will it solve it? So suspenseful!
大変素晴らしい動画です。とても役に立ちます。👍💯
That cooperation was wholesome to watch, wonderful with people with such in depth knowledge you possess.
legend Mark!! Can't believe we're going to be on another follow up for this player!
Great video and just shows with a touch of teamwork how far it can go.
thank you , eagerly awaiting a finished job.👍👏🤞🙏
Wow, I bet your guests loved seeing your process
I'd have replaced the SMD electrolytics on the spot, the 90s ones were notoriously bad, tons of Philips DCCs died because of the caps eventually leaking.
Can't beat a bit of teamwork. Well done guys. Good luck in the next episode Mark. Cheers 🍺
Awesome!! I was rather disappointed at the previous video because that's a very nice unit. Surprised also at the comments there from some really knowledgeable folks. Now I know it'll get fixed in the next one. Fantastic job
I can't recall ever using a vehicle tape deck with such smooth cassette loading and ejecting. The differences in product quality tiers used to be more obvious with relatively simple QoL features. ✌️
Excellent collaboration! Nice work guys!
A very positive person, nice to look at. Thank you, it's nice to learn how to repair))
you just came on at the right time I needed something interesting to watch thank you Mark and thanks for the video
Loved you in nutty professor ,man
Fantastic video guys. Its like the 3 tenors of electronics.
better and better, great stuff, knowledgeable guest stars as well!
Nice collab. Enjoy seeing men passionate about electronics.
The A/Vengers Assemble :)
One head is good, but three is better! 😊
fantastic mechanism right there, tough enough for bumpy road conditions and extreme temperatures.
excellent group effort everyone, this is great
Mark is great at what he does love the videos keep up the great work mate
A labor of love. Today some software and a computer and off you go. I have a recording studio in a spare room. Sounds as good as any studio. $800.00 and change. People record, polish and publish. No agents, no fees.....I love the CDs etc, but they're never making a comeback. I'm glad dedicated people keep the past working. TY.
It’s so good to watch this. Especially when you have such excellent assistance. It adds an extra level of feelgood❤
Brilliant! Another Mark video. I'm a fan of minidisc. I own 5 full sized hi fi players and about 10 portables. It's a great format.
Awesome collab. Great watch during my lunch time.
Hopefully one day, it still work! DCC is cool! I had one, a long time ago...
I've used minidisc 💽 4 track recorders in the past. I actually liked the technology! It's good to see the minidisc getting some attention after being superceded by compact disc. Thx again, Mark!
You’re back! Thank goodness! Glad to see you’re finally getting somewhere with the minidisc, hopefully you manage to suss it out.
Damn that radio (again). Looking forward to seeing it working Mark :)
Just need Techmoan to make an appearance now!
That is absolutely brilliant! Always been a big Dcc fan . Well done guys .!
Great video Mark and the gang. Yes i also love mini disk in car audio. Will be looking forward to part 2 once you have that motor diver chip. Keep up the good work Mark.
I believe we've been treated to a visit by the brain trust! A lot of talent in your lab Mark!
That was great idea to bring in Shazad!
These are the heroes the world needs.
Shazad's Alpine jacket is sick
Shazad is an Alpine fanatic, well-known in the Alpine collector circles.
Back in the days this would be a dream machine. FM RDS, Minidisk and DCC/CC with Dolby.
Excellent Mark Great Collab with the other geezers
What an exotic beast! Good luck with it!
Hope this one is not as time consuming as the AWIA FD-990 tape deck repair. Good work so far!
I am from India, so much like your videos, very useful
Mark this is Royalty! Wow!
You guys are the ultimate team to get this rare device working, I wish you the best luck! I am exited for more videos like this!
This is like a new electronic audio brains trust. I love it.
Thank you for posting 👍👍
Wow.
That is some international colaboration.
Great work you guys !
Thank You Mark
Hi Mark. You really keep us waiting for new content. I love My Mini Disc's as well. I got out My MZ-1, and got a Plastic Printing firm to print Me out some Battery terminals, so I can now use It on the move again. I get 18 hours out of one charge now as well. It Is quite a talking point everywhere I go with It. As I bought It from new, and still have the carry bag. Good Luck with the chip, hope It works. And You are back soon.
"sorry children"
Uncle Rodger
Great team work 👏🏼👍🏼
Great work , can’t wait until next episode 👍😎
Good job Mark! It's a complex device! Great you could hook up with some experts for advice.
I have confidence in you that this unit will be a worker after you've replaced that cooked motor driver chip!
A bit annoying that it requires a truck BCM hanging off it for it to work though!
Great video! Thanks Mark.
Loving the alpine jacket 👍had a Rockford fosgate one back in the day.
6:56 Mate, you had me in stitches with the knob and nut jokes 🤣 very unexpected from this channel, but I wholeheartedly welcome it. Cheers!
Magnificent as Ever 💎🥇👂🇬🇧
Great job guys and fantastic collaboration. Victory at last
That was really interesting. Thanks for the video
Mark, please please please can you post videos more often to help me with my addiction...... I swear I get the shakes and sweats between videos !
Holy Cow! That little thing is more complicated than the Apollo 11.
Just great! Love it!
Great collaboration. 👍
Cool surprise! Would be nice to have them all in the same room next time, as we can learn from the mutual thought process.
That one electrolytic might possibly be a good candidate for a change, as it might have been sitting in the heat for a long time.
I really liked the top team gathered!!!!!!
This is like a thriller! You're getting closer thanks to your fellow agents; once you find the secret Driver Chip this leathal mystery will be solved! I love it. This is online/IRL mystery solving at its best
Best channel on RUclips.. IMHO !
Man, i wish i could get lessons from you! :)
Well done fellas, looking forward to next time.😊
i love mini disc's... had a MD walkman and kenwood seperates recorder, for many years...
wonder what the neighbours thought was going down ? 😂 always a pleasure 👍
I hope we get a part 3 !!! And hopefully not in a year's time! hahaha It would be good seeing you replace that chip, but mainly finally seeing it running! What I don't understand is Ralf said the "Body Control Module" (the missing part from video #1) had to inject data with the correct VIN number. But the Body Control Module sounds like it was ripped from a random Ford Truck so even though it now powers up - surely it still wont work? And can the Body Control Module be re-programmed, and how would you know what VIN the radio is expecting? Sooooooo many questions !!! We need a part three !!!!
This is shaping up like the Akai cassette deck saga 😊
Nice find.
That is teamwork men.
The different accents was fun too. 😊
Nice video sir ❤❤
Now you're going to make me wait for that repair.
I see tons of places selling that LB1649 chip so we'll just wait for the repair!!
Are they genuine though? Way too many china fakes on the market these days.
Great job apriciated 🎉
Mark will stop at nothing to achieve a repair….protect this man at all costs!
I would like if the video would be longer, but still nice, I hope you find a new IC! 👍👍👍
When working, mini disc was a decent format but I’ve always found the transport on many to be very flimsy and quite prone to failure. This is most definitely the case with Teac units. Very fragile. The Sony minidisc Walkmans were not too bad. Still have mine.
The Achilles heel of Minidisc is the head assembly. Very easy for it to be knocked out of alignment and then it just won't read the disc.
Great job! Thankfully the LB1649 from Sanyo is still available (at least in germany) - digikey or ebay is your friend...
Looking at the bunch of flat-flexes all around you can imagine where the development costs go in these units.
really love the DCC eject system
