This suddenly brought to mind that terrifying Twilight Zone episode about the last man on earth surrounded by all the books. He was perfectly happy until he broke his glasses. The idea chilled me through. I love my books too.

This gentleman is a true aesthete. It is a rare gift to truly luxuriate in the imaginal realm. Cloistered and confined by a multitude of books, yet paradoxically exposed to the sheer multiplicity of images and feelings, sensations and thoughts. Time steeped in memories like dark tea and as ephemeral as violet-tinted incense smoke and the density of saffron cigarettes. We dream of antiquity, but the ancient has never departed. It is to be birthed continually in the present. Thank you for this video. We would have been friends in some other lifetime!

@720pblog Glad it connected with you. I was rapping for quite a while with no questions, just wandering around, and Sergey pulled it into 10 minutes. I hear it's being used in the USA for relaxation therapy! Which surprises me - and delights me too. Wishing you happy days

6:50 ff - “THE GREEKS AND THE IRRATIONAL - that’s a good book, by Mr. Dodds... God, the Greeks were the most amazing people that ever walked the earth; they invented everything that’s adult in human life...nobody else did: everything that is sane in our world comes from the Ancient Greeks.” - As a rather puerile and slightly insane Greek, I thank you. Only just stumbled onto your excellent channel and immediately subscribed. Greetings from Delphi! 🏛

Thanks so much for the film and voice of your personal library (and to Sergey Stefanovich for the thoughtful panning and editing). "Worlds beyond worlds" as you say, "Books are an expression of freedom". and yes "the 1st thing dictators do is control the books we may read". A delightful tour.

It is amazing how the mere glimpse of book that one has read will allow the observer to conjure up images and memories that will be totally unique to the reader. The quick shot of the name Malcolm Lowry on one of the books in this video for example will mean very little to someone who has never read Under The Volcano, but to a person who has, the ensuing reverie could lead one to no longer listen to the outside world.

I wish far more library/bookshelf tours were like this one. Just someone talking about their books and other bits and bobs, not feeling like they have to put on a show, or tell you how fantastic every book is.
I wonder how Mr Fallowell chose the books for his library. I know it appears to be very random, but when you look closer there are definite themes and collections.

Difficult say - a few thousand - but it probably looks more because the flat is not large. I cleared out a lot of paperbacks some years ago, so those here are mostly hardback and one's I'd want to keep.

Thank you for showing your library. I like the way you organise the books by language and region.
"We did not create ourselves". Spot on! Ps 100: verse 2a:
Be ye sure that the LORD he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; ...
    And,
O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. Psalm 34:8
As a student of French/Francophone literature, the Gospel of St John really spoke to me.

2:07 "... they may not all be to my taste, or I may not agree with what they have to say, but they could all do a #brilliant #intellectual #firework #display..."
6:21 "... #respect ... Sometimes respect can be a very suffocating emotion. We hear a lot about it, today... BUt... Respect is a by-product of something more profound, I think... When You turn it into an objective itself, I think... it [becomes a] pointless [gesture, pose or attitude?]..."
