What a treat it was to make this short film on this spectacular place and what it contained. The film was meant as a teaser to run at the extraordinary TED conference. To create this mood I used sophisticated camera techniques including a camera mounted on a wire, a 30 foot jib arm, and a miniature Dolly to float through this space and give just a taste of what it contains. Thank you for the opportunity, Jay Walker. To see more of my work, visit www.theHoffmancollection.com
I was blessed to have an opportunity to have a tour tonight. It is a sensory, an intellectual, and a spiritual experience to be there and to see the wonders of what the human mind has created through books and various artifacts on display. I can equate a visit to this library to traveling abroad in a time capsule. Utterly amazing and wondrous.
Hi Ashby, I was at a party there in October.
@CrazyRainbo Thank you for your comment. Mr. Walker asked me to make the movie because of previous documentary films I have made that were small, ran on RUclips, and gave audiences an emotional feeling about a place, person, or an idea. I think I did the library justice. From what I hear, so does he.
David Hoffman -- filmmaker
As someone who has seen the library many times (Jay is my uncle) I'd say you did a fantastic job.
Still one of my favorite videos on RUclips. What a treasure (of a library, and filmmaking, too!) I wish there was more media available about the library. Such an intriguing glimpse!
thank you for your compliment. Much appreciated. I am very proud of this work. I have presented twice at TED. you can see one of my presentations as part of a longer film I made. Just search fire on this, my RUclips channel, and watch the film I made about how I recovered from a fire that destroyed my archives.

I've had the privilege of visiting this place, and it is one of most incredible intellectual experiences I have ever had. Jay is an incredible storyteller and his passion is contagious. I'm grateful for being given the opportunity to see it.
Incredible library and wonderful filmmaking! Thank you for sharing!
This library is nothing short of magical.
The glass panels and chandelier + other room lighting is all connected and capable of True Color (256MM colors) and he's got a number of light shows set to different classical pieces. It's really fantastic.
What a stunningly beautiful place that is! The energy of that library represents remarkably well that child-like feeling of fascination and awe when looking at the world and all its wonders, which not only breathtakingly shows you the greatness of life itself, but which immediately triggers that socratic goosebump-effect when realising, that, although I may know a lot, I don't know nothing - and just by looking at the sheer size of that library "I can't know nothing"! For me as scientist/philosopher, that's just a dream come true🤓
Booktubers: "Welcome to my bookshelf tour!"
Jay Walker: "Hold my rare and first editions!"
It's absolutely breathtaking. If I have a chance I would definitely visit it!!
@CrazyRainbo I won a stage prize at the TED 2008 Conference. It was an honor and a privilege and I hope that Jay finds a way to digitally preserve this library so he can truly share it with all the world.
How have I never seen this place before. It is amazing. Thank You so much for the view!
Beautiful as usual, David!
The place is beautiful, the film is amazing, I'd like to live there and read, read, read.
Thank you David and Stana.
Thank you for making my life feel so insignificant
How has this only gotten 13000 something views??? This is so beautiful! Added to my favorites!
This is incredible! Thanks SK for the suggestion!
The composition is called "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams. It was based off of a melody written by Thomas Tallis, hence the title. It was used in Master and Commander, as was many other famous compositions.
Ryan Prichard i new it
What an incredible place. You gave us an experience not just a video, Loved it!
I envy Jay Walker so much
logicalempiricist2 he’s my second cousin

Track 6 Fantasia on a Theme by T. Tallis - Ralph Vaughn Williams
Thank you
Magic.
Amazing...
Amazing!
@Maxobillion No. Music from composer Ralph Vaughn Williams.
Que admirable todo.lo.que se aprecia
Great video...and great choice of music :)
One goof, but the information under the description says the song is "Fantasia on a Theme" by Thomas Tallis, that is inaccurate. It is "Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis" by Ralph Vaughn Williams.
Stana Katic brought me to this AMAZING PLACE!
Seeing how rich other cultures are with knowledge and science, the collection is very Western-centric and I'm saying that as a westerner. A little bit of a shame. Still very beautiful collection of course. :) Beautifully made movie!
Gorgeous video.
MAGNIFIQUE
Thank you Zaza.
David Hoffman - filmmaker
sorry! it posted before I saw the title of the piece was already written here.
awesome film!!!!
It would be valuable if there were liner notes for this beautiful video, i.e. listings of some of what is being shown. Those who want to know can look at the liner notes and those who only want the sensory experience of the film can enjoy it that way. It certainly struck me immediately to wonder who did the music - thank you for having added that into the introductory material here on youtube. Now, maybe some further listings of what we are seeing and the significance of the various pieces...? Your filmmaking is wonderful and leads to other questions.
Uh-maze-ing. I had perma-grin on my face! I was thrilled to see a Schonbek Jubilee as the center chandelier.
@sonbirrdz I do not understand your question.
David Hoffman - filmmaker
Stana Katic sent me here. You should look her up. She's amazing. The best.
My father did the glasswork in this library and I had no idea how breathtaking it really was. I hope to visit one day.
that is extraordinary. What is your father's name? I have been there and it is absolutely wonderful work.
David Hoffman filmmaker
@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker yes, it’s quite impressive. His name is Jonathan Redwood. I think it was done about 20 years ago. He also did the glass bridge that separates the library from the main house.
All spectacularly beautiful.
David Hoffman filmmaker
That’s awesome! I honestly think the backlit glass really ties this space together. Did your father create each of those designs by himself (as in drawing, then etching them?) or did he use a computer? Either way it’s incredible.
@@Drew791 someone else created the artwork and sandblasted it on the glass. My father measured and installed the glass. There was also a bridge with glass floor that he did there. Had to be precise with how much weight it could handle
DH- Excellent example of creative short filmmaking. Knockout selections on objects, light, angles and music. Five star. Did you present at TED?
To the filmmaker: This is a beautifully made film, but it would be really nice of you to include the title and composer of this piece of music in your description. You are using one of the great compositions by one of the great composers of music, both of which contribute to the depth and artistry of your film and predate your 'piece' by many years. (Vaughan Williams 1858-1952; 'Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis' written in 1910.)
If I were rich this is what I would build or my version of it . Not Ferrari's or private jets just a nice house with this as the center piece how beautiful is this place it's like going to a luxury museum
'Which piece' means he's asking for the title of this musical composition by Vaughan Williams. This composer wrote many pieces. The name of this piece is: 'Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis'.
Stana brought me here !!
Interessante, definitivamente gostaria de visitar um dia
We have tried on numerous occasions to contact the library for a visit, without any success. We own and operate the largest private environmental research library in the country, just a few miles South from the Walker library. We're somewhat stunned by the complete lack of interest and community cooperation.
@@henrylivingstone2800 And of course innovation and environmental science have nothing to do with each other.
Stana brought me here
what is this music i swear i played this before. I just can't remember the name
I am sorry but I cannot help you. I do not know Stana.
David Hoffman-filmmaker
i wanna go there.
What is the music underscoring this? It's right there, on the tip of my mind and I can't call it out!
@allinaday Thanks for the composer's name.
Track 6 Fantasia on a Theme by T. Tallis - Ralph Vaughn Williams
Soundtrack from Master and Commander. That's where I first heard it.
@allinaday
Which piece?
the skeletons from 2:46 what is that from?
That is an awesome library!!!
Wow!!!! I wonder who designed it!
M.C. Escher
astro coupe where is that?
No, Mark Finlay designed it. His firm is based in Southport CT
If he ever decides he doesn't want it anymore and just feels like giving it away, I wouldn't mind...
Music from Master and Commander?
Where is this library. What an interesting and beautiful place.
It's in a private residence in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Sorry but I like my library better because my library contains my books and it is the only one in the world in which I can wander around in my pajamas at three o'clock in the morning.
@Maxobillion Which piece?
