As I sat at home I found myself singing 'Danny Boy'. It was such a random thing to happen that it felt like it was a message from beyond the grave. My father was from Donegal, Ireland, and he passed away in 2013. As a child in the 60's, I heard my father sing that song. I searched the song in RUclips and found this touching guitar rendition from Eric Clapton ❤
I've been listening to him for over 50 years. There has never been one like him and never will again. He brings a sweetness to his play no matter what he does...It's just him. No guitar player hasn't been influenced by Eric and no guitar player has contributed more...Simple, complicated, slow, fast...there's a quality shining through his play that is HIM. He has a great soul. Utterly deserved stardom....quality that transcends the superlatives that have become cliches in his case......One of the greatest artists of our time. His great moments are history tome...real history in the book of soul ...Descriptions trivialize the reality. True greatness.
"No guitar player hasn't been influenced by Eric and no guitar player has contributed more" This only makes sense if Clapton was the only guitar you heard in 50 years lmfao.
Eric, job very well done! Your playing blends with your feeling and the combination is guitar magic. I’ve saved it to my fav songs and listen whenever I need “regrounding.” (I know, that’s not a word, but NOW it is.). ❤️🐈
That is stunningly beautiful from Eric PATRICK Clapton, he got this Irish/English tune to right, Eric with git no known Irish connection as far as i know except his middle name. This is an ancient Irish tune that was borrowed from an Irishwoman and was put to words by an English man called Frederic Weatherly in the 1900 and would have been heard millions of times during the 1st and 2nd world wars. We are far more connected in good ways than some people will admit or know. The great Eric plays Danny Boy so perfectly, he makes the guitar weep and feels deep pain and sadness as he plays this tune.
@james Bradshaw : Please be more dilligent when searching to uncover the history of something/ someone. : The air/tune is thought to go as far back as at least 1612 and was thought to be entitled 'Derry Air' given that the Royal Charter by King James 1st in 1613 meant that the prefix of London was then added to Derry it was then known as a Londonderry air. However the Air/tune was played at the Belfast Harp festival in 1792 by a Dennis Hempson living nearby in Malligan and was titled A'islean an ogfear " The young man's dream". The Air/ tune was then acquired and published in 1796 by an Edward Bunting who was a member of the 'preservation of Irish melodies society'. Fast forward to 1855 and it was re published by a George Petrie using the title " Unknown"(who took up the Mantle from Bunting after the Great Famine ), in preserving Irish airs, whilst touring the length and breadth of Ireland. And then in 1910 an English Barrister/ Lyricist " Frederick E Weatherly " wrote and released the song "Danny boy" using an altogether different air/ tune from that which we all know today. It flopped and so his sister Margaret asked her friend a Jane Ross who lived in Limvady Derry if she could marry it with a better air/ tune. Jane Ross had previously become enchanted by the melody played on a fiddle by a blind beggar who regularly travelled all over Derry. She asked the beggars permission to Notate the air/tune ( hopefully gave him at least a good meal) and immediately sent it of to Fredrick Wetherby, who put the air /tune to his song and re released it in 1913, the rest as the saying goes is history. Footnotes : The society for the preservation of Irish melodies/ music is still going strong and can be accessed from 73 Merrion Square Dublin & also Trinity college. Dilligent research is its own reward 🤝
My Father comes to mind when eve I hear this song. I have listened and shed tears to many versions. This is the most unique and the one so far I believe my father would have appreciated most. WELL DONE Eric my friend. Not sure I have heard anything as beautiful from you as I did after your sons death, and that was most special. Even more than this
beautiful ............sorry i didn't think an Englishman could play with such attention and appreciation of the beauty of this song .This is so moving ,god bless you
As I,Danny Thompson listens to this tune,it's always brings tears to my old eyes.Myfather used to sing it to me when I was a child. I think about all I shall lose when I pass.i have no fear of death, but I I fear the loss of my memories that I hold close to my heart.i weep for the people I leave behind, knowing I will never see them again.i pray that I will pass this way again, because I want to live it all over again!
I believe in my heart I will see my parents and sister again one day, they will wait for me, I feel them with me all the time you have to believe it’s in this music from Eric or on a sunny day. They are always with us
They play it at my dad funeral last December 10 most a year I miss him everyday my aunt how was Diagnosed with cancer shortly after my dad died there’s no fighting for her life
St .Patrick's day March 17 .2020 .Dedicated to my Father . John W . Sullivan .He named me after this Song even though I am a girl and I couldn't be more proud of that .Miss you Dad .
Obviously Eric Clapton is technically proficient on guitar. No doubt he is one of the greatest innovators in the evolution of Rock and Blues guitar. But what makes him special, and great, is the soul he puts into his performances. All that proficiency is useless without the soul. And, for the record ... he has become a very soulful singer as well.
When I played music in middle and high school, my band instructor often instructed us to "play with feeling" and I could never grasp that idea. THIS is what he meant.
@@ASSman864 Since the song has been around since 1910 Hendrix did not do it first--and who did it first doesn't matter--the point here is how fantastic Clapton's rendition is--and your link goes to Hendrix playing Wild Thing.
Love it. Thank you Eric. I will be listening to your version from now on. It's haunting beautiful and just when I thought I just couldn't listen to this song anymore. I've just done a u turn.😍
You are awesome. There are no words quite awesome enough for me to truly express how I fell when you play your blues don't ever stop because if I feel this strongly about your music it is so much more then i.
I’m studying fingerstyle versions of this song on RUclips to find an arrangement I’d like to follow. This is my favourite so far, and I note that Eric uses only the thumb on his right hand. Interesting.
This was my grandfather's favorite song. Even when Alzheimer's had ravaged his mind, he never forgot the song....
So sad, so poignant. I played this as the ashes of my son Danny were scattered at his favorite lake. He was a big fan of Clapton all his life.
Be cheer up dear!
Gone was the body of your son Danny, but his spirits and memories are always there.
Blessings to you, Danny, and your family !
Dear Martha, I know your Danny Boy is in heaven for eternity. Bless you.
He’ll always be with you. 💜😇
you poor wee thing...

@@MaximeFeliciano You're full of crap.
There's an elegance in simplicity but it is enhanced by good arrangemnet and by not overplaying the song. This was a beautiful rendition by Eric.
Beautiful song played by humble musician, this is amazingly beautiful!
가슴이 저 밑에서 저려오는 것 같습니다.영상 감사합니다.

Best version of Danny Boy ever!
최고예요!!!
By an Englishman no less.
He had to slide in some blues licks at the end... the true bluesman :)

Among many other "advanced" versions by great names, No One compares to this one's sensitivity, modesty and warmth. Not even close. A magical delight.
ron laor hendrix did it first and it actually sounded like bag pipes somehow. check it out

So beautiful and painful. Clapton's loss of his son will never diminish. He will feel sorrow all of his life.
Thank you Mr Clapton 💜
Growing up, I've had so many people sing this to me. This is by far my favorite!
Uma das mais belas canções mundiais tocada por um dos grandes da guitarra!
He makes it look so easy, but it takes a lifetime to develop that level of proficiency.
that is true, I still learning after all those years, the only trouble is everyone else are far better than me

The melody is beautiful but it's other worldly when combined with this chord progression in the back round.
Ohh that's right. I forgot his son. Here we are. It's winter/spring. Rebirth. What a treasure this man.
