Hard to believe that most people don't know that even in 2023 Abba are the 3rd biggest selling band in the world, Queen at 2 and the Beatles at 1. Even the rolling Stones have not outsold them and that is despite rereleasing albums during the time Abba had split up for like 20 years or something.

Im 15, me and my grandpa used to fight a lot haha, we loved each other too. When I was around 10/11, I remember one day we were dancing on a song. We never danced together, and it was such a happy moment, it was a moment of pure love. I randomly told this to a friend, and then I started hearing a random song playing in my head. And I was pretty sure it was a song from abba. Then I found this song, and I just remembered how this music played in the background while we were dancing on the song. He died when I went to 7 grade, I was with him everyday. This song connects me the most to him :) i love it
pj23 it definitely does :). I always cry when listening to this but not bcs of sadness, but because of happiness and love, because I feel his presence back and since the day now, I guess it still brings us together!
The secret truth covered up by many historians is that when Napoleon's army was routed at Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington blasted this song on horse-drawn loudspeakers.
It' s just like you write: your music has become and keeps on being a constant in my life so that I couldn't think of a single day without your voices supporting me as a loyal and old friend; thanks Anna, Bjorn, Benny and Frida for warming my heart with joy . Forever grateful, for ever and ever!
Jokes aside, He may have lost the battle, but still his name lives on... That is everything. To have your name in the history books for centuries and millennia. It is indeed remarkable that a person who lost is more famous than the victors.
@@HuplesCat i didn’t say he died at Waterloo , i said he fell, as in the metaphorical sense. I think he died in exile of consumption and lead poisoning
ABBA is just the definition of what music really is. All ages have a stake in their music. I grew into it, inculcated everyone close to me just because they hear me play it. No worries, no scare, no trembling...you don't have to be good at dancing...shake your head away, snap your fingers...the music takes you where you should be. I LOVE YOU ABBA
Surrendered like Napoleon we were when we saw the emergence of one of the most important and iconic bands in contemporary music. It has been 50 years since ABBA's spectacular appearance with "Waterloo" on April 6, 1974. The rest is living pop history.
Same here. My mother is in the same generation as ABBA (she was even pregnant at the same time as Agnetha, so my sister is only one day younger than Agnetha's and Björn's daughter Linda) and was a fan back then, despite the fact that the overly left-wing cultural elite here in Sweden in the 70s was against them.
My aunt would come over with her tape recorder and her ABBA tape and her signature box of wine lol And whoever was standing near the tape player it was their job to flip over the tape when it was done. Over and over and over. And here I am today. Thank you Aunt Marilyn. Rest in Peace ❤
I was born in 1977. I just love this group. The way the ladies voices blend is just blissful. I realize it’s not everyone’s taste but the way they complement each other is just amazing, to me.
I was born in 1980, and I love Abba. It plays at the restaurant (Soda Steve's Restaurant inside Paradise Hill, Oklahoma near Lake Tenkiller) I work. I'm a dishwasher. What would life have been like without ABBA! Happy 50th! 🎉6/4/74 - 6/4/24. Go to ABBA Voyage concert as soon as you can! I remember vividly watching the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest as a 6 year old and watching ABBA performing “Waterloo”, and being mesmerised. I’ve been a fan ever since, even being bullied for it, especially when entering secondary school in 1978. ABBA have a combined wealth of nearly £1.5billion. Oddly enough, 6 April 1974 to 6 April 2024 is 1,577,912,463 seconds. So ABBA have earned £1 per second over the last 50 years! Thank you Anni-Frid, Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha.

@Degree7 yep a war to remove monarchy and give everyone rights to become a person and not stay an expenditure for the country, what an evil man. In reality napoleon lost and history is written by the victors so the monarchies of the time would demonise him, yet his legacy lives on in the form of constitutions and civil rights that we would not have imagined back then.
Thank you ABBA for this fantastic song. Now its 50 years ago - how did time fly by?? Your anniversary was in German News today. Thank you for giving people worldwide such a great feeling!
Last year in history, when we were learning about the French revolution/Napoleonic Era, my teacher would always play this song as we came into the class. Classic Mr. Blaine.
They were neither. They were primarily a pop group with incredible records. With this, and a couple other exceptions, they never made it in the States. There was too much good music available domestically and from England. I was 16 when this was released. NEVER as big here as continental Europe. A very talented group, though.
Well, the RnR HOF is by design broad-categories have to be all over the map. That's the way AM and FM were in the day of this record. The station would say "Rock" but that meant a lot of different music. Some like disco never really were considered part of rock..
I agree with you. This is a rock-n-roll song and their clothes are totally glam which would make them glam rockers. The piano player is even wearing a Big Bopper (Chantilly Lace) style animal print. Glam rock was bands returning to '50s style showmanship and less serious, more upbeat music. Glam rockers didn't look like their audience unlike Hippy Acid bands. This song reminds me of my favorites from the 1950s with it's hard driving rhythm, piano and horns. Later they did disco which I didn't care for. James Taylor, Pink Floyd and many others never put out a rock-n-roll song anywhere near as good as 'Waterloo'.

I fought at the battle of waterloo in 1815. My god, what a battle I was in a square when the french laid in their attack, and the bandsmen played this song in tribute. The duke of wellington looked over at me saying, hey homes, what's my next move cuz? Say what? Now over two hundred years later, I still love this song. Amazing memories for a veteran LOL
I worked at a gas station in a town called Waterloo, and we had satellite radio. We kept it on the 70s channel so this song would play every day, and it never got old.
Abba had some fine harmony, and their producers/arrangers made great use of vocal stacking to get such a full sound. I have always liked good vocal harmony and clean, well blended, accompaniment music, more than most hard rock, like several of the other commenters. My favorite groups were, The 4 Tops, The Temps, The Seekers, The Fifth Dimension, and others, along those lines. I also liked Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, America, Steely Dan, and others along those lines. Oh yes, I am 72 years old, in case anybody is wondering, and I did like Abba, also. So, there you go.
As a kid in the 70's, I could never quite make out the words. And now that I can see what they actually are, I have to say what AMAZING, CLEVER lyrics to a fantastically great song they!!!!!!!!!!!

Not only this one. I always thought the 1st line on Take a chance on me was "if you change your mind on a Thursday night," which does makes sense but not correct.
Same here man! We had to read an article about the Waterloo in social studies and I then had the song in my head and started to sing the song very quietly and the teacher giggled.
Rick Weaver I don't want to start a debate but... Is there still people in 2018 seeing Napoléon as a horrible dictator bringing only horror and destruction and trying to bring down the "holy kingdoms" of Europe? Gosh..
I was 18 and it was the summer of "74" and this was the song that put ABBA on the charts. This rocked the radio stations all summer. I had to go out and buy the 45rpm. They were great!
ABBA nearly disbanded after Waterloo as they believed they were one hit wonders. However Molly Meldrum from ABC Countdown Australia received a record from RCA with the title song mamma mia. As soon as he heard the intro he knew it would be a hit. But RCA who was the distributor for Polar music wouldn't release the single under instruction from Polar Music. Molly had a knack for songs that would be hits and this was one of them. So he flew to Sweden to meet ABBA and to meet Benny and bjorn and convince them to release the single. And the rest is history. Also Fernando was number one in the Australian records charts for 14 weeks.
Yeah, I think Barbara had it wrong, she put 1975 & 2018/ I graduated 1974 and that summer two songs really stood out...this one and Air That I Breathe by the Hollies.
Yeah my dad was like the second type there. He liked "hard rock" (because Black Sabbath is serious fucking business) so he could never admit he loved abba

ABBA were not only a disco band but also glam rockers. One of the most musically talented and versatile pop groups of all time.
+Eero Haanpää didn't almost every musician in Europe back in the 1970s?
They were neither. They were primarily a pop group with incredible records. With this, and a couple other exceptions, they never made it in the States. There was too much good music available domestically and from England. I was 16 when this was released. NEVER as big here as continental Europe. A very talented group, though.
Which is why they are in the RnR Hall of Fame where they absolutely belong.
