Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris - Didn't Leave Nobody But The Baby. Done in the style of appalachian gospel, this is one of my most requested videos.
beautiful..i first heard this in o brother where out thou and sang it to put my daughter to sleep when she was a newborn. i didnt know emmylou harris sang it, i was named after her..weird how related things pop up throughout life.
I sing this to my kids all the time, creepy or not (ever listen to the lyrics of many lullabies? Like Rock-a--bye baby?)...it's got the weirdest calming effect on them and they almost always fall asleep by the end of the song. I change the lyrics to "Your Daddy's gone away"....and "He's long gone with his combat boots on" since their dad is a Marine and is often gone on deployments. Glad to pass this on to my kids.
I tried the suggestion of starting two or three clips of this song 5-6 seconds apart and OMG what a sensation no other words can describe it, try it and you'll see what I mean.
Oh WOW this is so awesome, love ya all,God Bless ya,wishing you well with a really good evening my friends,I have really enjoyed listening too you sing )
singlesoldier you don't seem to kno your religion but that's normal for most of us Americans read more Catholics tried to take england because they had a diff tyought process. Completely against the real teachings of Jesus faith is not a religion You must have a personal relationship with god not through the church, how many people has the " church" killed ?????????????????
IMHO music is subjective and people in this day and age will make of one song something completely different from what it was ORIGINALLY ment to be, in this particular songs case I think of it as nothin more than a momma callin her man over after a hard day's work for some good ole fashioned love. *hot whistle* Xo
@cypresbyrne I'm not sure it is really about anything specific. Very old songs like this get changed, added to, cobbled together in all sorts of ways! The joy of the process of oral transmission. I laughed when I heard the line about "You and me and the devil makes three!" There is an old and well known nursery rhyme that says "Daddy and me and baby makes three!"
You'd think the movie soundtrack would have a better studio version.. NOT SO! This specific performance of these three is the best I have found thus far..
first open one window then minimize to allow you to open another then again do the same again, once you've done it three times start the first clip then start the second clip and finally start the third clip, then just sit back and you will hear what amounts to nothing less than a heavenly choir
@MissMiasWorld Its a shame, I hear a good song, not a creepy dark song, but I suppose I must be superficial and a bit thick, but to be honest I prefer it this way, then I see the lighter nicer side of things, its quite good not to see all those things that you guys see.
Matthew 7:13-14 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Amen
Red shoes did not get that connotation till the 1950's. The mother is dead. The color red was the poet's color of untimely death from the dark ages to the early 20th century pandemics. The best clue of death is lay your bones on the alabaster stones; another way of saying tombstone.
yo- i love anything where you cant fight the groove. These women just destroy this number. Transcendentally soulful- This song gave me goose bumps in 'Oh Brother...' Here it practically yanks the tears right out of my being. Thanks for the post!
I think the mother died and was buried in the field by the father. When he returns to the cabin; death will have taken the baby. This song was written about a century ago when deaths from the flu and other diseases were so common.
It's Emmy-lou on melody/bass, Alison on the middle harmony and Gillian on the high harmony part right? Thought that Emmy-lou got through more than the other two which might be because she was on lead vocal?
I love this song. But the person doing the singing is the Death, right? She's come to take the baby now he's alone. I think that is the real meaning. No father, mother on the field, the baby alone...is the Death!
@koteshub Momma knows her man is soo tired that he'll lay himself down on the alabaster stones and pass out. So she's tellin him come on baby and do so and I'll make ya feel all right. :)
the album version is sooooooooooooooo creepy with the strange guitar and other background noises! but I think its supposed to be creepy cause theyre meant to be the Sirens from the odessy
Try this I think its great, start up 2-3 of this vid and leave 2-3 seconds between each I promise its fantastic i love this song and these three extremely talented ladies.
@DylanSpoelstra i am a 33 year old women and without my b.s., was raised not to cry. so i give you a big thumbs up. cause this song makes me cry, :) i am learning

I am agnost and gospel, especially these three ladies are still beautiful to listen to. Songs to soothe the savage soul. ;)
beautiful..i first heard this in o brother where out thou and sang it to put my daughter to sleep when she was a newborn. i didnt know emmylou harris sang it, i was named after her..weird how related things pop up throughout life.
Theres no way possible to listen to this just once...... no matter how many times a year you listen

I plan on singin this song to my baby when I have it to help calm it down....even though it mentions the devil xlolx
Oh yeah, tried that suggestion, fantastic no other words can describe it !!! just an over all sensation.
@ddecimal great!!! think you can do three times actually...thats how its done in the movie

Good point. Many of these old songs are really perverse and dark when you listen with care. Which is one of the reasons they're so great.
Allison Krauss is such a wonderful singer. God has truly blessed all 3 of these women with great voices
Absolutely beautiful! Brought tears to my eyes.
If you want to try the "round", I've found that you should start the next video at the foot stomp on the 0:04 mark.
Best since Linda Ronstadt; Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton...check out some of Linda's albums from days gone by!!!!
@shadowpt i know its on o brother where art thou soundtrack but dont know if its actually on any of their albums
Gillian is radiant in person, I have to say. I saw her at the Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa. I wish I'd had my camera.
thought she was trying to buy the record of "constant sorrow" and the guy just couldn't keep it on the shelves
Wow, really, this really does sounds WONDERFUL if you have this playing in a few different windows at once.
To be honest I somehow dont hear what you guys hear, its just a song, no death, on poison, just a song !!!!
It's definitely EmmyLou Harris that's singing melody so I'm guessing would be Gillian singing low harmony?
Krauss didn't want to be in the movie as she was nine months pregnant, don't know about the others...
Its about slavery, the mother was sold (red shoes) and the dad is out in the fields.
Great song
What a group of amazing voices
Alabaster Stones are the white stones that are put on graves
Rockwallaby,
These are the ladies that sang it in Oh Brother Where Art Thou.
crying for my baby , the devil and me... all night long. so much tears ;(
baptist can claim all they want..thats an old fashion Catholic song
Such unison of incredible talent. Where did you find this video?
lol
they should have had them in the movie. they wouldve fit in.
If I'm ever a single dad, this is gonna be my go-to lullaby.
The woman on the far left, you hear her voice the clearest.
i can't understand that this song it's evil or not LOL
I hope my next 3 lifetimes , these will be my mothers
I hope my next three lifetimes , these are my mothers
Those are different actresses. They're lip-syncing.
They must be Witch's, this is just MAGIC

Cool. the real faces behind this fab song.

I love this song so much, and the movie
18 People Didn't Want To Go To Sleep.
Sounds like a Casey Anthony favorite.
Fantastic to hear this again, The human voice is such a versatile sound and used like this its great, not cluttered with superfluous music.
@pawpawbear02 How do you do this?
holy hell that is perfect pitch...
I love me some bluegrass!!!!!!!!!
Mesmerizing, the sound of sirens.
This is chilling.....but great.
That was majorly excellent...
Good song, haunting lyrics.
three angles in perfect harmony......I have seen all three of them many times by themselves in concert, but this is a real treat...thanks for posting this gem
