- Lyudmilla Semenyaka as Phrygia
Irek Mukhamedov as Spartacus
Choreography by Yuri Grigorovitch
Irek Mukhamedov, Maria Bilova, Lyudmilla Semenyaka, Algis Zhuraitis, Bolshoi Opera Ballet
I am a little embarrassed to say that,
but I saw this video at least 7 times this day. And I cried each time.
What a wonderful music and what a beautiful performance!
Don’t be embarrassed. I watched over 100 times, over the years… when you combine Khachaturian with Bolshoi Ballet, it will equal perfection.
Love it 💕
Khachaturian. Bolshoi Ballet. Russian school of music and dance. Need I say more? Didn’t think so….
Splendid perfection.
Of all of the adagios from Spartacus that I have even seen, this is by far the best. Lyudmilla really convinces me that this is the morning after finding her first love. The choreography blends with the music and her performance is perfect. Thanks, my lady.
I wholeheartedly agree.
Very beautiful. My favorite is Nina Kaptsova, her extensions are incredible, her emotional involvement too. Second best for me is Anna Nikulina
In agreement!
I agree too. I know nothing about ballet, but the musicality, and dare I say 'ictus', sets it apart.
Yes..... Just beautiful 💕🌹
Decades ago, around 1980 or so, when my wife and I were living in Oxnard Shores, CA, someone planned a group trip to Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to see/hear Spartacus. It was either July or August. The air conditioning failed. But, the Bolshoi did their best. It was excruciatingly hot in our seats. Everyone was sweating. Yet those brilliant dancers and orchestra performed it. I'll NEVER forget their professionalism, courage, and incredible strength. Of course, they struggled but held on. It is a very special moment in our memories. On the way out to our cars, the Bolshoi dancers were exiting to their bus under the watchful eyes of their KGB chaperones. I stopped to let them pass (to their air-conditioned bus!) and started to give them my own applause. And, so did the others in our small knot of audience members. The dancers were smiling, happy, and totally graceful. This scene is an exact replica of that day's Adagio. I wonder if this actual video is from that performance? ...... Fat chance, sure. But, I can dream, can't I?
A wonderful memory for you. I'm pretty sure this is a recording from the Bolshoi Theatre.
Да это Большой театр ❤
I think this exquisite choreography by Grigorovich was originally set on his wife, Bessmertnova, and Mukhamedov. For some reason I can't find the video anymore but this performance is almost identical. That famous arabesque lift is glorious and I have never seen anyone but Mukhamedov do it perfectly. Though this ballerina gets very close, Bessmertnova was in flight before she was lifted.
When a man dance like man is magnificent !
of course but also : Y Vassiliev- Boris Akimov-Y Vladimirov- Carlos Acosta and many others too.
Tatiana h
Yes, just not American dancers. Americans think that only Gays can and must dance Ballet...so ignorant!
@@DFSLana1Спартак гей ? Это невозможно 😢
I doubt you'll ever see such a beautiful blend of music and the portrayal of love anywhere else. The choreography is outstanding and the dancers suburb. I totally agree with the comment of te5rrier.
A lot about the dancers here, but i want to say a word for the Music. Its sweeping and timeless and reflects two lovers caught up in something much greater than themselves, and with wonderful interpretation from the dancers too. Aram Khachaturian tends to be overlooked as a composer but this is Masterpiece.
Excelltnt coreography, inmortal, inmensly beutiful music, this is the type of things taht make the huge economic crisis more bearable!.
Sublime Lyudmila!
Music, dance interpretation, the complete harmony of 2 souls all exquisitely portrayed.
What more can anyone seek to enjoy. Utterly beautiful. Thank god for youtube as I would never have seen this masterpiece. Thank you.
The most beautiful I've ever seen...so flawless and effortless....
I heard this music as a soundtrack in a movie from 1968: "Mayerling" (Omar Sharif - Catherine Deneuve) and fell in love with that. Only after 40 years I found out it was by Khachaturian. Great performance! Thanks!
Думаю, что я пересмотрела это адажио в исполнении всех известных балерин, и никто просто не приближается по к Семеняке. Ее танец просто завораживает! Просто смотришь, забываешь обо всем и погружаешься в магию ее танца. Браво!
The concert master solo at the end is absolutely divine. Splendid tone, vibrato.. Russian school at its best.
I have watched this scene so many many times and it's still so beautiful and thrilling to watch. Bravo!
I agree with Zep1083.
I first heard this piece about 15 years ago and I, too, cried.
The LOVE conveyed in this music is beyond measure,
As I am listening and watchin now, I am getting chills from the beauty of it all.
Poignant and powerful. This is one of the most stunning performances I've every seen. The first time I heard this music was in the movie "Mayerling", and I fell in love with it instantly. Thank you for posting this masterpiece of ballet and music.
Beautiful music and performance!
I absolutely love khachaturian's score.
Hermoso pasaje y música, gracias Toño Salcedo por compartir
Irek!
Che bellezza. Bravi. Lo avevo in video cassetta, proprio questo pezzo con Irek e Lyudmilla, quando ero giovincella e a forza di guardarlo avevo fuso il nastro
This brings back memories of the Onedin Line on The BBC.
Breathtaking...
Шедеврально как статуи работы Микеланджело внезапно ожили👍
I'm not much into ballet usually, but this is sublime.
I am not much into ballet too.. but this one wow...
My family came from old Russia
When it still was an Imperial Country. The Russian soul as exhibited by the glorious music and ballet show a deep feeling so extremely different from the Russian political ideology! Long live the ARTS and ARTISTS!
The first time I heard this theme was in 1968 looking at the movie "Mayerling" performed by Omar Sharif and Catherine Deneuve. I was fond of this music, but I did not know it was from Kachaturian. Today I know that thanks to You Tube! :)
Thank you for this awesome masterpiece! no doubt five stars!
I have seen many versions of Spartacus but this is by far the best one. Does anyone know where I can buy the video?
Wonderful , simply wonderful.
mesmerising...
una meraviglia!!!!! addoro questo spettacolo!!!!
This is so beautiful. This is one ballet I just do not know. I've never seen it but of course the music is completely familiar to me. How is it that I've never seen this?!! This is such a beautiful solo scene!
Belleza total, conmovedora.
magnifique
amazing......i love this adage
Beautiful
Yeah, i love invader zim, its just so random and epic for a kids cartoon. Its hard to come by people who really appreciate its genius.
i first heard this tune on the coen brothers film: the hudsucker proxy, with tim robbins, and what a tune, and indeed it was a great film and highly recommend it to anyone who has not seen it.

we are human beings, we fall in love, this is what it sounds like
Gorgeous
Wonderful Dancing.
唯一無二のスパルタクス。美しく、動く絵画のよう。
That's actually little ritual dance we perform before me and my wife go to work every day
Maravilhoso!
Merveilleusement supérieur.
Después de esto lo más sublime es la muerte. ¿Cómo puede existir tanta belleza y armonía?
Irek is built a Greek statue
БРАВО!!!!!!!!!! СПАСИБО!!!!!!!!
Natalia Bessmertnova, Lyudmilla Semenyaka, Nina Kaptsova. Perfection as Grigorovich's Phrygia. Never to forget Vladimir Vasiliev and Irek Mukhamedov, each the perfect Spartacus in their own way. Many have tried, but only Grigorovich raises Spartacus to the sublime.
Very true. And never even try to forget Maris Liepa. There are complémentarité rôles that even surpasse Spartakus. YE S
Delightful.
Marvelous, wonderful.
AMAZING! RUSSIAN BALLET THE BEST IN THIS WORL!

Same here too. An underrated movie.
¡Maravilloso!
Мой любимый после Васильева Ирек Мухамедов!
Einfach toll !!!
The Hudsucker Proxy made me aware of this song
thanks a lot!
My comment below refers to those of both Robodancer and SenseiTohru concerning the movie 'Caligula'.
Excellent!
This music was in one of the greatest triple X films, 'Caligula",ever made but it is not even close to the sensuality shown in this version by the Bolshoi.

Same here.
I always loved Mukhamedoff (with Semaniaka) as Spartacus, but, now, seeing Ivan Vasiliev, I have my doubts..
Do you what year was this performance?
I could be completely wrong, but isn't this the end of Act II?
Phaedra Miranda You are completely wrong. It is Act III, although there was a briefer pas de deux with these two in Act II.
@krychadesign
Hi i see you are from australia :) i couldn't find it there but it appears an all-region DVD is available on amazon.co.uk. just type in B0009X24R0 in the search box.
caligula is one
From which year is this performance?
1990 I believe.
the oboe player sounds as if he had too much Vodka B4 the show
it is not Bessmertnova dancing!!!!
Check out the full 1970 perf here: ruclips.net/video/Nc-w1Zgl4dU/видео.html
Gittoplo : it's a mistake about year : ludmilla Semenyaka began to dance Spartacus in 1975 for the first time at Bolchoi then in France as Aegyne at Palais des Congrès-Paris , Bessmertnova was Effie , Vladimir Vassiliev-Spartacus . J saw Semenyaka but in 1970 no possible
@@alainspiteri502 If you click on the link then you will see that it says 1970. Ludmila is not listed as part of the cast. Hence the confusion perhaps.
@@Gittoplo j known very dancer because at Conservatory my friend also in ballet-,class, me in piano and in fact j known dancers since 1954 j saw with her Cuevas balket and Nina Vyroubova in 1958 there are on Y Tube often mistakes about name if you click " Spartacus Mukamedov Bessmetnova pdd Act 3 it's not Bessmertnova but Semenyaka often mistakes on Y Tube thank," for your answer
This isn't Bessmertnova...
L. Semeniaka

"Shame will save the world". I wish Tarkovsky was right.
she's good ......but not as good as the late Natalia Bessmertnova .....
Acceptable performance but not nearly as good as Anna Nikulina and Michail Lobukhin
