Chinese Lion Dance for Pan-American Masters Games Athletes in Cleveland

The Pan-American Masters Games are a multisport event for Masters Athletes over the age of 35. The 2024 Pan-American Masters Games were held in Cleveland Ohio USA and featured athletes from 6 continents, 48 states and more than 70 countries. Participants competed in 24 medal-contending sports. Several special events were produced for the athletes (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland Guardians game, etc.) including an international concert in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens. The opening act, as introduced by WKYC Reporter and MC for the evening Candace Hare was the Kwan Family Lion Dance. George Kwan said that his family has been performing the traditional Chines Lion Dance in Cleveland for about 44 years. He explained to the audience how the Lion is supposed to ward off evil spirits and usher in good luck. He also got the audience standing up and going through some of the moves that the Lion would be doing. Then they performed the Lion Dance.
