I don't like this video, because communists wasn't a thing yet. Up to 1928 or so Soviet Union was in state of allowing business and enterprise. Then there was New Economical Policy which was building capitalism, so full capitalism. And only then, when Stalin came to power building of communism was declared (rather, "completing capitalism"). No precise dates from me, sorry, but until 1928 Soviet Union was a freedom fighter state. So, the whole narrative for the animation in this video is just too comical.

Being the most veteran and equipped fighting unit in the zone, they most likely would have succeeded. Which makes for a fascinating what-if scenario.

    Czech here, few notions,
    1. Legions were created from Czechoslovaks minorites that already lived on Russians lands before the war started. POWs were recruited after some time of diplomatic pressure and persuasion after native legions were already established by their combat prowess. Nobody wants to give a gun to captured enemy.
    2. Even though there were certainly some desertion going on, it wasn't that big of a deal as we wish it was. More like national legends. Main manpower came from POWs later on as there was about 130k legionaries in Russia, ~80k in France and perhaps ~30k on Italian front, total, on the end of the war.
Myths like entire regiments marching to Russians to switch a side are simply legends, as most noted 28th regiment I believe, was simply lost in Russian wilderness and almost decimated, before they found way back to Austrian lines, where there were reorganized and fought in k.u.k. army till war ended.
    3. Japanese, Americans and other troops weren't dispatched to Russia to assist Legions, but to intervene into Russian civil war, supporting Whites.
    4. Nice video, we certainly kick their asses, possibly stole part of their national treasure, that's why Russian hates us till today and we them thanks to occupation.

Well, we have Hungary, Poland, France and the UK to thank for that. Well... Maybe not Poland, but certainly the rest. As we had over a milion strong army at the start of WWII, but both Hungary and Poland joined in with the Reich tearing Czechoslovakia to pieces. It also did not help the slovaks defected and actualy joined the Reich and fought in the war on their side. France and the UK threw us to Hitler to appease him, which killed any chance of defending our country.

Fun fact that I never hear mentioned, when this story is covered: a Polish unit (the 5th Siberian Rifle Division) was also created due to this mess, out of the Polish Siberian diaspora (the Tsars had a habit of dumping misbehaving Poles into Siberia) and some POWs from the Polish Legions, that fought on the side of the Central Powers against Russia. Although they weren't super fond of both Kaisers either, especially the German one. It's a whole other story.

This is where Slovaks took a part in creating the Czechoslovak republic. The whole existence of these legions made allies to recognize the newborn state. And in fact, the father of the legions was Milan Rastislav Stefanik. There were three main people standing behind the effort of recognizing the republic. The well-known are Masaryk and Benes. The third one is Stefanik. Masaryk neither Benes had contacts within the allies, It was Stefanik who opened them the door into high diplomatic circles, especially among the French. After the war had broken, He fought for France. He was a pilot because due to his lack of physique and health He could not fight in trenches. And not like today, the planes were considered like something where You had to be like captain america. Against all the odds He became a hell of a fighting pilot.
