This week Gordon is in Northern Finland where he's exploring all this interesting country has to offer. But on the banks of an incredible river, where it shares the border with Sweden, Gordon is cooking up a root vegetable hash for an incredible breakfast. No Ikea furniture was assembled but Gordon did bring a bit of Sweden to the dish with some sausage! Rainy and in the height of summer, this is an incredible breakfast dish!

In Finland that dish is called "Pyttipannu". Usually eaten for lunch or dinner, but I could eat it any time of the day

He's using a potato called puikula which cooks really fast so boiling them takes like half the time of a common potato so you gotta be careful with them so you don't overcook them.

Gordon saying "soccer" is more of a nightmare than the food made by Chef Mike!
A MASSIVE THANK YOU!
SOCCER? WHI IN THE FLYING FUCK?!
As soon as he said soccer I threw up 🤮😂
Soccer is originally a British-English term! It was to differentiate Soccer Football from Rugby Football.
Oh yeah I remember my mum telling me this a very long time ago, thanks a lot !
@@BrendanBeckett You are indeed correct.
However, long ago, 'thou' was also used as a term of address, which is no longer the case. If you were to use now, you'd get a strange look. Periodically speaking now, a Brit saying "soccer" would rightfully get you a funny look, as would I if I were to start writing with þ and use Middle English, even if it was correct in a certain period.
So, whilst you're absolutely correct (and it's definitely useful to elucidate many others), in terms of region and period, it's odd for a native Brit of the modern period to use the term.
Anyway, I'm sure it's just for much of the North American audience. I was merely using the opportunity for a good ol' _Kitchen Nightmares_ reference and general banter. 😉
Hey that was great ! So nice to see you in my Home Country 💗 I'm from Lapland and Sweden sure is right there. Your breakfast hash looked amazing although the beet was bit surprise ingredient. Delicious no doubt. Thanks 👌👍
Gordon has inspired me to feed my family better meals with more natural ingredients. You’re an amazing man. Thank you.
@@chillimilliroast9255 Lol, how are beggars not banned from this channel? No discipline from the admins nowadays.
If hash is english for "pyttipanna", then it might be Swedish as well as English. But it absolutely is not breakfast food in Sweden at least, don't know if it's different in Finland.
Pyttipannu is made for dinner VERY rarely made (potato and herring alone is more common)
It's totally normal to get pyttipannu for breakfast at hotels, meant for turists. No one does it at home for breakfast.
Exactly, I'm also Swedish and the food he makes here is more like dinner here in Sweden. But a very old-fashioned dinner, this food was common here for about 50 years ago.

Very good, Gordon. My whole family supports you and watches you cook 🔴 Gordon stay healthy to share with us many other great recipes 🔴
As we call it in Sweden. Pytt I panna translates to small in a pann. Absolutely love it myself from leftovers.
Gordon could you please show the rest of the audience raggmunk? Thats a dish that needs to be shared with the world.
in finland we call it pyttipannu and everyone always wonders wtf does pytti mean
@@Confield its a finnish version of pytt which means small. Probably refering to the small pieces.
But we dont eat pyttipanna for breakfast, right? 😅
Pytt i panna is a lunch meal, nothing else, and literally scraps. Its like a paella. Served with fried eggs and pickled RED beets.
The beetroot season in Finland lasts about a month, during which you get nice, fresh beetroot in various forms. Rest of the year only beetroot available is this vile pre-sliced stuff in a vinegar-based pickling juice.
We had like 25-30°C here for a month and as soon as Gordon arrives, we got the opposite lol

This is typical oldschool Swe/Fin dish. I think it originates from Sweden (at least the name in Swedish means "small in a pan", but since we used to be one country, it's also very common food in Finland. But it's not typical breakfast in either of the countries. More like lunch or dinner. It's very common food in schools in Finland.
It doesn't mean "small in a pan" if you mean pyttipanna. Pytt refers to a bunch of leftovers not to confuse with pytte which means "very small".
Love Gordon! Watched like every show he ever made :) Pretty sure that hash is both Finish and Swedish. In Sweden we call it pyttipanna and i wouldn't say we eat it at breakfast but rather at lunch.
In Finland we call it Pyttipannu :D and it was by far the best school lunch we had. I used to live only about 20 km from where he is at right now.

So is this Gordon's take on 'pyttipannu'? Lovely, but definitely not a breakfast.
Technically, whatever the first thing you eat in the day is your breakfast.
Looks alot like Google images of pyttipannu, but then my great grandpa made what he called Scrapple with oatmeal not cornmeal, though that's technically a dish called Goetta from a different region.
This is basically a spin of "pytt i panna" and is a typical working class lunch / dinner here in Sweden.
