I love shopping at Aldi as a lot of their products are European and don't contain so many toxic chemical preservatives (many that are used in the USA are banned over there)

I'm German-American and lived in Germany for many years where my family shopped at Aldi a lot. Not exclusively, but still significantly more than most other grocery stores in Rheinland-Pfalz. I was so thrilled when I first saw an Aldi in the US in the small town I lived in back in the late 90's. I haven't lived anywhere since then that didn't have Aldis all over so I very rarely shop at Walmart any more.

I was going to say something similar but you said it better. I live near a major NE Ohio city and all the WalMarts near me have issues with theft, credit card skimmers, low stock, spoiled stock, or just plain goofballs shopping there no matter what time of day I go. I prefer to scan and bag my own groceries so I can sort things as I go and my bread isn’t squished under the bag of apples but I prefer Aldi, in and out with no distractions and no drama.

I'm definitely an Aldi shopper. I actually prefer a smaller store on top of the great prices. I get overwhelmed with so many options. I shop Aldi first and then Hy-Vee and Fareway for items Aldi doesn't have. Hy-Vee frequently runs some great sales, but Fareway tends to have more specialty items for better prices.
We are Team Extra Toasty Cheez-Its in our house! But typically that's one of the few snacks we buy in name brand. Aldi's version are perfectly fine Cheez-Its duplicates, but they aren't toasty enough to be extra toasty in my opinion. 😀

Thank you for your thoughts and comparisons. I am 65 miles away from my nearest Aldi and I really like Aldi. I’m 2 1/2 miles from my nearest Walmart. Prior to Covid. Aldi was significantly less expensive than Walmart. You could get a gallon of milk for $1.60 of 2%.since Covid they in my opinion, do not have better prices enough to justify 130 mile round-trip.

Aldi and meal planning are my two favorite food shop strategies. It saves us so much money. Aldi is so quick and easy to shop too. The Aldi stores in my area are way smaller than a Meijer or Walmart, so I spend much less time actually walking around the store. It's also the closest to me. 45 minute trip for a weekly food shop for my family of 4. (For comparison, I used to spend an hour and a half when I shopped at Meijer.) Love it.

It is definitely regional because our Aldi's now has either the same prices as Walmart or actually more than our local Walmart. Which is crazy to me because I have been shopping at Aldi's for a very long time and I would always go there first. Now I still price check, but rarely find that it is worth it. Plus ours is always struggling to stay stocked, which then makes me go to Walmart or another store depending on sales, to get what I need.

I have noticed lately the Aldi store is raising prices and they are close to Walmart, so as you said if you have drive much farther from your home to get to one or the other, the closer one would be best. I am an elderly widow, so for the most part my son picks up my groceries for me (that really cuts out impulse buying). @@BrianK-zz4fk I agree. Their BOGO prices are always less than both Walmart and Aldi in my area. You have to do some meal planning and stocking up when your favorites go on sale to save. Sales are on a 6 to 8-week cycle so it always comes back around. I eat cottage cheese and avocado for lunch every weekday. Publix almost always has a brand of cottage cheese on sale, even if it's not my favorite. I can stock up on my favorite when it's BOGO and make do with another brand when I'm out. I bought specific things at Aldi but continued to buy the bulk of my groceries at Walmart. That flipped in June of this year despite the fact that Aldi has continued to raise prices by 30 cents or more on the items that I buy. Aldi bought out Winn-Dixie and will convert some of their stores to Aldis. It will be interesting to see if they subdivide those Winn-Dixie stores or make bigger Aldis with more products.

I really like Aldi and used to shop there regularly but Walmart is more practical for me, for the reasons you mentioned, proximity and grocery pickup being easier and less expensive. I have no problem meeting the $35 threshold

For a few years now, my father-in-law has taken off one weekday morning twice per month to drive 30-40 minutes into the nearest city (we live in the rural Great Plains) to hit Aldi, Trader Joe’s, Sam’s Club, and more recently Costco. The only major grocery store we have in our town is a Walmart Supercenter. I started going with him on those bimonthly mornings when I can, and the cost difference is substantial, and I do most of that shopping at Aldi. The gas ends up being paid for by what is saved on groceries. Also, concerning living in a rural area, things go out of stock at our Walmart and take a while to come back, often accompanied by a price hike (heavy whipping cream and eggs, for example). It’s so nice to know that I’ll more than likely find the item for a slightly cheaper price and better quality at Aldi.
My family and I are moving this year to an area that has an Aldi in town, and we’re so excited :)

Something to take note, prices at your local Walmart may vary from the next Walmart over. For example, my local Walmart's milk price is half the price of the Walmart that is a 10 - 15 minute drive to the location in the next town over. The nearest Aldi to me is a 20+ minute drive.

I love shopping at Aldi especially during Christmas time . Our German American family loves Stollen but none of us have successfully made it until we opened the wrapper on Deuscheküchen stollen! Now we can all claim perfection.

Same! And the gingerbread Christmas cookies are perfect, too. Their occasional German pickles are decent but not my favorite brand. I like their sauerkraut and pickled red cabbage. I've never been a fan of their chocolate brand--seems too cheap and waxy to me like getting a really low quality hollow Easter bunny when you expected a Lindt-type.

I appreciate your honest comparison. I’m not a big WalMart fan and we don’t have Aldi in my city, but I was able to visit one when in the Austin area. I couldn’t have been more disappointed. I compared prices on some of the items I had recently purchased (granted most were name brand), the price was either the same or higher. The other thing that was a turn off was the overall disarray of items on the shelves. The one bright spot was the produce but I was fully stocked so left without spending a penny. Costco, Sam’s and HEB remain my favorites, with WalMart for certain items.

With young kids i was shopping exclusively at walmart to save time and gas, now that kids are older and not as needy i am starting to compare prices and shop more frugally. Im jumping around between walmart, ruler foods (krogers version of aldi), and surpisingly dollar tree. Ive found some good things for actually good prices there, despite the typically smaller packages.

Just for reference I'm in MA. I wasn't at all surprised by the results between Aldi and WM. For an overall shopping trip I'm going to spend less at Aldi. I do still go to WM for a few things such as toiletry items and a few things where I prefer WM brand to the Aldi brand or things I just can't get at Aldi. Great video! 😊

I find it interesting to compare Aldi in America to Aldi in England where I am. I am jealous that you can get a larger bag of flour as the most we can get in 1.5kg (3lbs ish) 😅 such a small thing but as someone who bakes it would be so nice to get a larger bag. Also seeing Walmart compared to its equivalent her (Asda) is always interesting

We don’t have Aldi in Idaho but we do have Winco. It is an employee owned store and I have done comparison shopping and Winco has come out ahead of Walmart on most everything I buy. I was really surprised by that for some reason. Another reason I like to shop there is it’s not as crowded and you don’t have to dodge the large carts people are filling up for the online shopping customers.

Aldi prices have definitely gone up over the years, but, and this is the biggest difference for me, I hate shopping in Walmart and I have never waited in line for 20-30 minutes in Aldi like I have at Walmart. At my local Walmart you are lucky to find a parking spot. The Aldi is located one minute from the Walmart and both are 10 minutes from my home.

Schedule a pickup online. Anything's better than supporting Aldi and their dangerous policies. See my note above about their support of the dangerous menace "Best Friends Animal Society. They financially promote placing pitbulls with a heavily documented history of violent attacks into communities and with homes while lying about the dogs' past violence. BOYCOTT ALDI!
