  • This video took a long time to make. Seven months to be exact. Along the road there were many rewrites, recording mishaps, a physical move, and an entire script with the voice over recorded that got thrown in the trash. This took way longer than I wanted it to, but this is one of my favorite games of all time. I had to make sure that this would be a video that I was proud to post. I hope the wait was worth it.

    27:02 ohhhhh. It's a Demiurge. Yeah, that would explain SMT's depiction of God SOOO much better, as the actual God is the guy that gave them free will in the first place. Plus Persona did that too. Guy didn't have the cube face but it was still basically the same dude with the same motivation. And I mean, universal will, collective unconscious, it's basically the same thing

    Wonderfully spoken, mate. I'm delighted to see someone actually engaging with Nocturne's narrative instead of just writing it off as _"reject friends, kill God."_ SMT Nocturne is about the struggle to maintain one's humanity in a world that has forsaken you. It's about who you really are, when the chips are down; the person you are when there's nothing left to lose.Throughout the story, nearly all of the main cast end up losing their humanity in different ways: Naoki is forced by Lucifer into rejecting part of his own humanity, but it's ultimately up to him whether he chooses to forsake it entirely or work to reclaim it. Chiaki loses her humanity when she's confronted with her own mortality, and decides that she will subject the world to the same fate that was inflicted upon her-overcome, or perish. Isamu loses his humanity when he rejects his need for others, deciding that the only person he needs is himself. Hijiri technically loses his humanity at the beginning of the game (since he never actually made it to the hospital and was only reborn due to his curse) but for all intents and purposes, the real moment he lost his humanity was when he was consumed by the power of the _Amala Network,_ and was willing to do whatever he needed in order to harness it. Hikawa was already a monster well before the _Conception,_ and you could even make a case for Sakahagi rejecting his "humanity" and immediately embracing the callous, chaotic, _Fuck you, got mine_ nature of the _Vortex World_ after being reborn as a Manikin. The only character who rejects this pattern is Yuko, which tracks given that her ending, the _Freedom_ ending, is the one where Naoki restores the world and successfully reverts the _Conception,_ restoring not only his own humanity, but his friends' humanity as well. You could argue that Yuko forsook her humanity when she was complicit in the _Conception,_ but she was horrified to see what had become of the world, and was willing to give her life to set things right. And despite her initial self-important delusions, Yuko _never_ gave up on making a better world for her students. Yuko in particular is such an underappreciated character, and the _Freedom_ ending is easily my favourite. Bollocks to the TDE and _double bollocks_ to the _Labyrinth of Amala._
    Also, I like the funny pizza man. He's pretty cool too.

    Subbed for the title. I'm not the biggest RPG fan but there are a few that have won me over with their worlds. Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Panzer Dragoon Saga , and of course Nocturne.
    Even the line from the beginning, "From the journal of a man who wandered into another world." Such a haunting line that sets the tone for the rest of the game.

    Interesting watch. I will say on topic of TDE, assuming Strange Journey's references to Nocturne are canon, it's funny how TDE and Freedom lead to the same result of humans not knowing any better and the gods having to step in. Sure they may be no Conception, but the gods could just do a Schwartzvelt until humanity gets their crap together.

    I really hope you continue to make SMT videos, this was well produced and I enjoyed your commentary. After your story analysis of this game, I’m curious on your thoughts to how it ties in to SMTV:V or other entries in the series

    • @shealtiel__
      @shealtiel__  Месяц назад +1

      @noahr607 I plan on making videos on most other entries in the franchise, as it's my favorite franchise, though it won't be right away. For now I will say I don't really care how Nocturne ties into other entries like SMTV. Each entry (that I have played so far) has its own story that doesn't seem to be affected by previous games that much. For example: SMTV may take place after TDE, but you don't need knowledge of TDE to understand Da'at. The knowledge needed to understand Da'at is all in SMTV.

    Nocturne was my first SMT. It was so different when compared to previous JRPGs that I played.
    I remember that I was hyped up because Gamefan was enthusiastically recommending it. But it was so hard to find. Heck, I had to take a bus/train trip that lasted over an hour for each durection to finally buy a second-hand one (and the shop was in a seedier part of town. ) But it was near mint because the previous owner did not enjoy it. I think I bought it on Friday, and it was released on Wednesday.
    And when I encountered The Matador, I understood why. That was tough for a guy who only I knew power-leveling and did not understand the press turn system. It took a week of trial and failure for me to gain enlightenment. And the energic music helped me deal with the frustration. Also, the fact it was hard to get the game helped me to persevere.
    My first playthrough was a mess. Subsequent playthroughs were a lot smoother and enjoyable! And Dante was pretty useful, so that was a huge bonus!

    I love how much your passion for this game comes through. The aesthetics of the game still hold up so well even after 20 years, and the plot and characters can still lead to such complex thoughts despite the limited dialogue and interactions.
    One thing that I think gets under-discussed, though, is the fact that the True Demon Ending was introduced with the Maniax edition, one of the re-releases Atlus is so famous for. The base game was led by the producer who would go on to head the Persona games, while the version that included the Fiends, the Labyrinth of Amala, etc., were introduced by the guy who would go on to head the development of SMT 4. In the base game, the Freedom Ending really was the best ending available, and the game stood as complete-- in which case, the Freedom Ending can be understood as the protagonist going through a coming of age story in which he must learn to accept the responsibility that comes with freedom, and the specific choices that lead to that ending take on more meaning.

    I picked it up after revelations and eternal punishment. I played this game to completion almost 100% blind. I couldn't figure out ongyo-ki, and i looked up an explanation of how to use the 5th kalpa tunnel for macca. I also ended up reading how to get the extra press turn before i actually obtained it.
    Nocturne is one of those games. Compared to a lot of the other megaten games, the dungeons are what really set it apart. Being so beautiful in 3d doesn't hurt either. It got remastered for a reason.

    34:25 It seems misplaced to accuse the Demi-Fiend [player] of hiding from the responsibility of coming up with an answer, when the entire premise is that they aren't *allowed* to come up with an answer, for reasons that (the meta-factor of game design necessities aside) seem entirely arbitrary and pushed upon them. I've never played, but I think that "reject all the canned options as BS" might come closest to my own response, and I don't think that's my fault.

    • @shealtiel__
      @shealtiel__  Месяц назад

      While you may not be able to conceive a reason, you have the power to shape the future of the world and are given five options. There is no magical ending without consequences, which is what makes the choice hard. But if you choose to do nothing, you're essentially giving up. You refuse to put any faith into any of these options or determine which one has the best pro/con ratio. You have determined that, unless there is an ending that has no negative consequences, then the world has no future. And thus, that's the world you're left with. One with no futute.

      @@shealtiel__I honestly think that your response to calling it the bad ending and viewing it as wasted potential is more of a reflection of your thoughts than to do with the ending itself. Thats the beauty of these games. It doesn’t tell you what it is right and wrong, and any statement you make about these games is yours and yours alone. I don’t agree with you calling it a bad ending it’s an ending that you chose, satisfying or not. You could also argue that the player may want this to happen. Maybe they really hate human society and don’t believe it deserves a second chance. That is also valid.

    I played this game last year after finishing SMT 1 and playing 30 hours into SMT 2 and was expecting big things, both narratively and gameplaywise. The gameplay was really refreshing, but it kinda stopped there for me... The atmosphere and gameplay got me through the game, but most of the characters felt like they were just placeholders for their Reason and this really disappointed me. I think that if you compare Nocturne to 1 and 2, you can see that the first two games pulled from history and tried to say something through their plot beats and gameplay. Even though i see the point in your video and in most people's takes on this game, i think that in general, Nocturne just felt really like a nothing burger to me and the endings were so disappointing, like imagine going through the whole Amala labyrinth just to get that mega power trip ending 🤮🤮🤮

    • @Ti_MD
      @Ti_MD Месяц назад +3

      Treating the True Demon Ending as the "real ending" does the game a disservice, and obscures what I understand to be the real historical context and message of the game. The original release of the game didn't have the fiends or the labyrinth of Amala-- all you had was the Reasons and the Freedom Ending.
      More to the point, the game's release came when Japan was dealing with the aftermath of its economic collapse in the early 90s, and young people (like the high school characters in the game) have to think about how they are going to enter into the adult world. Will they become gears in a corporate machine, working for an executive like Hikawa who they have to trust will lead everyone to a world with "eternal prosperity"? Will they follow ambition and try to prove themselves worthy of standing on top of the pile like Chiaki? Will they, like Isamu, act like no one else has the right to place actual demands on them? Or can they grow beyond their teacher's despair and try to make better use of the freedom that modern society offers to them?
      If you want more of this perspective, seek out the video by Moon Channel about "Why Do You Always Kill Gods in JRPGs?". It was eye-opening for me.

    • @PedroDragonNest
      @PedroDragonNest Месяц назад

      @Ti_MD I didn't say that TDE is the true ending, BUT if it's the most challenging one, I don't think I would be wrong to expect it to be the true/better one. I agree with your point and saw that video too, but I think that the post bubble existencial crisis is much better explored in the previous entries than in this one.

    • @Ti_MD
      @Ti_MD Месяц назад +4

      I think the fact that most of the Nocturne video essays I've seen treat TDE as the true ending points to a problem with Atlus' tendency to release "definitive" editions of mechanically and thematically complete games. The culmination of the original story gets muddled by the creation of a shoehorned DLC ending. It's not that the idea explored in the DLC is bad, it's just that it obscures the previous idea. Then again, isn't that also what folks say about the newer Persona games relative to the older ones? That they lost track of some of what made the original games special? I admit I'm not as up on the discourse about the older SMT games.
      I see Nocturne and the Freedom Ending as part of the same train of thought that led to the modern Persona games (and Metaphor: Refantazio) through Katsura Hashino, and TDE as what led conceptually into SMT 4, since Kazayuki Yamai, who directed the Labyrinth of Amala expansion, went on to direct SMT 4. It's not that one ending is actually better or worse, but they're leading in different directions as far as the social and political commentary. Something something artistic vision.
